Some basics here: best potato cage is 1/2" wire mesh tube 4' high lined with landscaping weed barrier. Fill that 1/3 way with good mulch when you plant your seed potatoes. When plants are half way to top, add about a foot of soil. When plants are to the top, add more soil. AFTER the plant has flowered and starts to die off, it is time to harvest. Just pull up the wire mesh tube and there are your potatoes! No digging. Dig?
Better to use a fork to lift potatoes as you will get most of them out of the ground. Sifting the soil by hand to find potatoes is not the best way to do it
I HAVE NO ARGUMENT AGAINST GROWING YOUR OWN. MY TROUBLE BEGINS WHEN i HAVE TO WORK TO GET CASH TO PAY BILLS. THEN CULTIVATE THIS CROP FOR FOOD I NEED. TIME....TIME IS NEEDED FOR THIS. IF I CAN'T STORE IT WITHOUT ROT....WHERE DOES THE SAVINGS EMERGE? MOST OF IT WILL BE WASTED TOWARDS ROT. TIME & MONEY IS WASTED HERE.
@Tiggerpilot Not true. Once you harvest them, store some away. If you dont do that it WILL rot do to oxidation. Get yourself some jars and boil them.... then store. Its all about attitude. Positive thoughts yield positive results.
In the long run, it is cheaper to grow your own food. By growing your own food, you can pick it as it is needed. $20 a month in water and about $10 worth of seeds will give you a few hundred dollars in vegetables a month.
Planted some corn from feed and it seems the processes of monsanto are in effect. The corn was stunted and they had about 6 regular size but irregular shaped kernals and the others were missing or stunted. Very scary. I planted store bought tomatoes and they produces some nice ones but way undersize. They were suppose to be beefsteak but didn't reach its normal growth patterns.

does any one know if the amount of flowers that bloom on a plant is indicative of how many potatoes are growing? never grew them before this year and have a lot of flowers growing from two seed potatoes. thanks for any help.
lol the way i did this is i just sprinkled casually sprinkled seeds one day on my way home. few months later i just plucked em out of the ground and put em in a plastic bag. why the hell do you take all those steps to be careful. they're POTATOES!
If it tastes as good as it sounds, I'm sure it's delicious. I've never heard of it before .....I've been growing spuds for a long time, but I'm up in Canada & probably our varieties are different from yours.
I harvest my potato tubs whole, although its tempting to take a few from near the top. (It's probably better to pick the large potatoes early on to stimulate smaller tubers to grow.)
obama will soon make growing crops illegal as part of his plan to enslave the American people and sicken them with government approved processed foods that will be rationed off at local food centers. We must prepare now and build great fortresses in the Canadian wilderness if we are to survive this tyrannical change.
SprinklesOnKetchup: The bill was/is HR 2749..it will make growing food that is organic,or food that is NOT genetically Modified a crime...It has already passed the house...
Is Obama a Socialist and a supporter of Marxist principles? Yes he is. This does not mean that we need to move to Canada and build castles or something. Running away from a problem usually doesn't work for long.
Besides...the next elections will send a strong message to the Democrat party.
America will not stand for a Marxist as our leader.
So start growing some potatoes in you back yard and don't bother the Canadians.
Obama started where Bush left off, more war to make money for the federal reserve bankers, arms companies, pharmaceutical companies. Your currency is a private profit making enterprise by a couple of families, aka eternal debt for USA), and all these industries have bought out all your politicians and major media
@MCSmudgeEIRE I am not sure what that has to do with potato's but I agree with you completely. But give the people a little time and we will fix this problem. Most of us know that this is what is happening but can't quite seem to get together to put a stop to it YET.
Growing up I was told you need to let potatoes sit on a counter for a few days before eating them. Is there any truth to that or is it an old wives tale?
I never heard that before that must be an old wives tale. Go ahead pick and eat but cook them first of course. I know you already knew that I just added that because there are so many wannabe smart asses on you tube. Somebody probably told you you could not eat them right away because they were saving them for later or just themselves because they know there is nothing like a home grown pototo fresh out of the garden. myth > DEBUNKED
a while ago i would of said you were talking nonsense, now i 100% agree with you on this. i am learning how to grow my own food, and have adopted other measures towards self sufficiency.
Man I just put our taters in the ground last week. We stack tires up to make the plants produce more. Might be worth tryin. Message me and I'll letcha know. I wish the growing season up here was as long as yours. Great vids btw
what kind of po ta toe did you plant? ok really i planted my taders in truck tires and i just added another tire to the stack yesterday,(4 high now,5/18) this year has been completely abnormal with a hot winter and a very cold and dark spring. my grandma said they should have died before easter, yet they are alive and well. i dont htink i am very far from you. i'm to the east of dallas, our vegetation is more scarce than yours. I'll try to remember to let you know how they turn out.
Wow, planting in tires, what a great idea. From now one when I get new car tires I will recycle the old ones and built up a funky garden bed. Thank you!
Nice looking taters. I like em fried with olive oil, and onions.
We like to use a heavy mulch, it makes it easy to pull the mulch aside to expose the fresh young tender 'new' potatoes. That way I get the fresh ones without hurting the mainplant, later I'll get the rest of them when I want.
I also like to mound the soil up around the tater bushes, this will help grow a few more potatoes along the newly covered stems.

Being self sufficient is becoming more and more important each day.
planting some in wooded areas in case you are forced from your home in an emergency or a disaster is also a good idea.
I save seeds religiously now.

Same here: crazy is as crazy does. After 911 all bets are off.
I had to return control to myself by acting in a positive and proactive way.
Everything resides with me now; if they destroy one crop with insects, etc. I have several others in remote areas off the beaten path.
Potatoes are spreading out in one area unmonitored. They get dug up by animals and more grow as a result.
Corn seeds germinated all by themselves. Racoons ate them?
food is a very serious matter for everyone.
peace :)
