2. india and sri lanka were part of british empire till 1947. british handed over the rule to the sinhalese people (majority) in sri lanka in 1948.
3. since 1948, the majority sinhalese adopted a racist policy against the minority tamils. they were discriminated in every aspect. for example the govt ration would be 20kg rice/month for sinhalese family but only 10kg rice for sri lankan tamil family. A sinhalese school boy could score 50% and get into a decent college but a tamil boy needed 70% to get into the same college.
these racist attitude continude, the tamils protested peacefully from 1950s to 1980s.
LTTE took revenge by killing indian prime minister rajiv gandhi in 1990s for war crimes on tamils. since then india is thinking deeply before helping LTTE.

Answers to your queries
1. Tamil kings ruled the part of south india including sri lanka since 235 BCE. so people living todays part of sril lanka are descendents of these kings known as sri lankan tamils(minorities). alternatively tamils living in southern india are the Indian Tamils. they share the same language, culture and history.
2. india and sri lanka were part of british empire till 1947. british handed over the rule to the sinhalese people (majority) in sri lanka in 1948.

3. since 1948, the majority sinhalese adopted a racist policy against the minority tamils. they were discriminated in every aspect. for example the govt ration would be 20kg rice/month for sinhalese family but only 10kg rice for sri lankan tamil family. A sinhalese school boy could score 50% and get into a decent college but a tamil boy needed 70% to get into the same college.
these racist attitude continude, the tamils protested peacefully from 1950s to 1980s.
