  • I cant open the nook&zergy download to extract the files...? it says its invalid when i do try to open it HELP!!!

  • how do i get my computer to reconize the device. i was reading the forum about nook colors drivers being detected and how it wont let nook tablets on.. could u help me please

  • Just a reminder for those having a hard time getting the NOOK DEVICE to show up in your device manager. MAKE SURE YOUR AN ADMINISTRATOR and have ADMINISTRATIVE RIGHTS on your PC. Once you have done this you can uninstall the required drivers and install the needed ones.

  • how do I have the "N" button open GO Launcher?

  • loaded 1.3 back onto my Nook as i had 1.4.1. when I loaded the apk package installer, i get the App Installer or Package Installer choice. However, when I select package installer, it gave me a message that said "install blocked - For security, your phone is set to block installation of the applications not obtained from the Android Market" Then it pushes me back to the web page...

    Any ideas?

  • @vevinamm yes. U are running a nook color and this won't work for u

  • Everything worked fine, and then when the RED writing came up it asked me lots and lots of questions, i put yes for them all but then when i disconnected it the "N" button only worked to go to the main screen and i didnt get to do the search steps that you did... What should i do?? Can i restore and start all over and try again??

  • Btw i already install the ADB and it appears on my devide manager as Android phone

  • @akramuddin91 Follow newer root video please

  • I do all the steps but when i click the nookandzergy.bat file the it can't detect the device and i can't go any further

  • I did it all step by step but my computer says my drivers are already the up to date ones recommended :(

  • @RachieJ01 follow video on troubleshooting drivers, this one is outdated

  • friend me on facebook, t.smith360@ yahoo.com

  • hey bra, you helped me get my version back to 1.4.0 I was doin everything as you was telling me until you got to the part click on start right click on MY COMPUTER??? I could not right click. That is were I am stuck. I do have the debugger in the bottom left corner.... please help me get passed this. I have been tryin to make my nook tablet to an android. I like the way you explain EVERYTHING. thanks:)

  • @bluetee74 run runmefirst.bat and it will open device manager automatically

  • I have the tablet with 1.4.1 software. how do you root that and get android market on there?

  • @gregwaff use my latest video showing you how with the SD card and SD file

  • hey I rooted my nook tablet with the Step by Step by Albert Wertz of Tabletroms and it all of sudden blacked out and will not cut back on...Can anybody tell me what's the problem?

  • @frozenbeyondice Sounds like your battery ran out?

  • when i click install package it says. for security reasons, only apps purchased through the nook shop can be installed. What should i do?

  • @kevezlySP you are version 1.4.1... I would follow my latest video on rooting with my custom root sdcard. See video on my YouTube channel

  • I was doing Indirect's method of unlocking the Nook Tablet and came around a problem. This: * daemon not running. starting it now * * daemon started successfully * List of devices attached *****************4009 offline did your nook Tablet show up? type Y for yes and N for no Please make your decision:y first need to make sure you didnt lie about it showing up, I also need to check for root incase you want to run any updates! help please?
  • @FrankDOTtv disconnect, make sure usb debugging is on and then close nook zergy. reconnect and wait 20 seconds before you start nook zergy after you have confirmed usb debuggin appears in bottom left of nook tablet

  • because we choose to trust hackers right albertcwertz and community?

  • @magicka56 yes ;) the hackers had to make the drivers because barnes and noble did not publish any.

  • having problems when i installed the apk id dint' go to settings to begin with and enable debugging, got the little 2 icons for start and stop the first time but can't get back to there, and when i install or run now it gives me all teh info on what it does not actually running anymore, any idea on how to fix this? or get it to run again where i can get to add in the debugging.. or how do i delete it? if i try to re-run the download it just installs over it and does nothing.

  • @Grndragon26 download app any cut and then make a link to the hidden setting or download the NT hidden settings app, both can be found on XDA

  • @albertcwertz any idea what i did wrong? or how to get those 2 buttons back up? maybe it's already running in the background, i'll check later when i'm off work.

  • @Grndragon26 sounds like you forgot to turn something on, not certain but any cut should get you back to that menu

  • @albertcwertz i haven't rooted the device yet was just gettign that set up first before i rooted, it, so where can i get the any cut just the regular bn app store?

  • Are there going to be any ROMS for the tablet?

  • not yet @foxtrot22charlie

  • I can't get past the "Install Blocked"warning. I don't have a settings button, just 1 large Ok button across the entire message box after launching the package. Updated OS with tighter security? Is there a work around for this?

  • @simpelli Ya i have the samething

  • @Diverd48 watch video on reverting to 1.4.0

  • you are software version 1.4.1 and must revert to version 1.4.0 see that video please @simpelli

  • Hey albert, I successfully rooted the nook but I'm having a few problems with my device since it was rooted, I can't access android keyboard evn in normal app settings or hidden i kp getting fores close all the time even with other settings am trying to run. I'm runnin honey comb launcher and ran into problems with the awd launcher. My battery life runs out faster than usual. Do you have any suggestions for me? as well as debloating device what options I should chose for either honeycomb or adw?

  • @fallenangelnell I tried adw and couldnt even access kindle app to dwnload my books to read... Btw wat is busybox for? oh and I ran hcl updater and got to see 3.2 honeycomb but couldn't dwnload when i reached to the part called open... :( it froze. Wat is the best app as well as stop apps that might b running in the background without me knowing or to save battery or is it normal for my NT to be loosing battery life rapidly?

  • Got keyboard working again tricky process but I can't reroot it won't install correct drivers it keeps wanting to install the regular nook drivers now? Any ideas

  • @gowrestle160 see video on driver troubleshooting

  • Help factory reaeted without removing ice keyboard now I do not have a keyboard

  • @gowrestle160 8 failed boots?

  • when I ran Nook and Zergy I accidently clicked the older version (from 1st time rooted back in Nov) so it didn't prompt for System mods, honeycomb or any of new adds. Should I unroot it and start process all over?

  • @bugnuzi2 update with hijack adb app and new nook zergy

  • figured it out

  • @actingallcrazyful I thought you would ;)

  • Hi and thank you for the video. After I ran the root it says I needed another launcher to be able to use live wallpapers Y or N. What do I do?

  • @actingallcrazyful yes ;)

  • TU for the quick response. Why would I want to revert back to 1.4.0 when I am already using 1.4.0?

  • @BJAaronson the process is informative, I didnt tell you to revert back. The video shows other things and you can learn from it.

  • I want to follow your two videos to root my Nook. I am still using version 1.4.0. I haven't tuurned on the Wi-fi since the upload. I have read so many posts that I need clarification on a few points. How do I prevent 1.4.1 from uploading while I am following your instructions? My understanding is that I can't prevent automatic uploads until my Nook is rooted. Can I use the computer whose USB port I have been previously using to sideload books and music onto my Nook. Can I expect problems? TU

  • @BJAaronson watch my ota block video. I walk you through this step by step. You can also check my 1.4.0 revert video. I revert back to 1.4.0, root, then install OTA block

  • one more question.. has anyone tried it with out the ! on the nook...

  • its coming up at two devices on my computer. wpd filesystem volume driver... i dont know what that does.. and nook tablet. every time i delete one or the other from the list.. they both come back either as. wpd filesystem volume driver and nook tablet or nook tablet and nook tablet..

  • Thanks Albert, this was really helpful. Rooted and running smoothly, brilliant!

  • Awesome video Albert. Rooted mine last night and since the batch file Indirect had failed on the sdcard method on mine, I just went through and cleaned up his batch file - picked and chose what I wanted installed and removed and voila! :-) Thanks to you guys for doing all the hard work.

  • no matter what i do.. it always finds the nook... i tried restarting my computer. i even changed the setting on the nook usb debugging while it was hooked up to my computer ... still it showed up every time...

  • Hey. thanks for this. before i try this i wanna ask how safe is this, will i still be able to update my nook afterwards and is it okay that i already set up my nook (e.g. does this have to be done straight from the box)

  • I downloaded "tgps_launcher-1apk.) and when I click " Package Installer" I get the message "Install blocked - For security reasons, only apps purchased through the NOOK shop can be installed." Is this because I am running Software version: 1.4.1? And if so, how do I chacge the version to the right version to root my tablet. Thank you !

  • @billywaltmon see video on how to revert back to 1.4.0 on my youtube channel

  • Albert, this video was very helpful and I almost made it all the way through. When I got to the end to pick the default launcher, I made a rookie mistake a picked the HOME launched instead of Honeycomb. Is there anyway to go back and change the default? Or how do I get it back to factory settings so I an re-root the device? Thank you so much for your help in advance. This was my first time rooting and of course I mess up the last step. Cheers!

  • @gerdy1983 did you install a launcher? if so you might be able to use the search function to look for it and run the apk on the nook tablet. You might be able to search for the market and run it or the homecatcher apk and run it to change the settings. If this doesnt help, try using the browser to search for a launcher to download like go launcher or adw launcher and install through internet to force the prompt to appear again

  • my nook tablet will not allow superuser permissions any suggestions?

  • @gowrestle160 did you root? what did you do?

  • can u still keep the apps u downloaded to the nook after u rooted it

  • @rohankings23 yes

  • Hey, so I had few questions.

I installed beautiful widgets but it wont let me set location, and does this root allow me to use all of the given storage or is does it still only let me use 1gb of free space. Thanks

  • @madgodzilla512 its a little difficult but yes it works to set location. But is paid app only. Also can access space through es explorer

  • @albertcwertz great video! worked perfectly the first time i tried it and was very simple. Now that I am rooted using the 1.4.0, will my nook try to automatically update and kill the root? If so is there something I need to do to prevent the update or is there nothing to worry about? Thanks again for the video!

  • @dyotani watch ota block video

  • My NOOK tablet icon in my device manager folder wont show up what driver do i get rid of to make it show up and how can i find it? thanks

  • @garysiebert6 you will have to open device manager and see what adds to the menu when you plug your nook in. can appear as many different things. most common is usb mass storage device at the bottom

  • @albertcwertz I can not get my NOOK tablet icon to show up either. It keeps showing up as a usb mass storage device. I uninstall it but it always comes back the same when I plug in my NOOK. Any idea? Thanks.

  • @stevestonescigar try watching part one video for USB debugging and driver troubleshooting and thread for it

  • Your video is informative, but weak. Mediocre at best.

  • @adunski I appreciate the constructive feedback, much appreciated.

  • i cant seem to get my computer to not find the nook...lol.... this is a first..

  • Albert I just rooted my Nook tablet, but I am having issues loading apps on to my device. I am getting errors related to /mnt/Sdcard. Apps like Mx video player and andftp can not write to this location. Do you know what may be wrong?

  • @pennat05 try rebooting?

  • @albertcwertz I tried that. When I start the Mx video player i get "Sd card not present"

  • @pennat05 honestly, if it were me I would unroot and reroot

  • @albertcwertz Ok so NookandZergy crashed on me at 11:35 I tried running it again but sometimes the tablet device number doesn't show up and other times it does. I've started the entire process over a few times but still nothing. It's almost as if the tablet is "half-rooted" which I know isn't possible but that's the best way to describe it. One thing I noticed is that when I unzip my driers and nookandzergy, 2 runmefirst.bat files are present so I copy and replaced it. Any ideas from anyone?

  • @clownie126 i would try another pc maybe?

  • @albertcwertz hey thanks for the response. what I ended up doing was running NARS instead and it worked perfectly. just an alternative to anyone else possibly running a linux distro looking to root their tablet.

  • Albert, I followed all the instructions and everything worked but I lost my search function. I reset the Nook and I still don't have a search function. Any ideas?

  • did you debloat? if so than it would have removed the barnes and noble search. start over and dont debloat if you want to keep that. @Heather39F

  • I LOVE YOU MAN!! Followed video. I ran into a couple of things that were different than video & after panicking I made decision to continue. When I extracted all files to ntroot, prompted to replace files. 1 wasn't same size as it's replacement. Scary... especially when it got to part of video "can't you feel the warranty invalidating?" YES. I could honestly feel it die, watched it's ghost float away. At end of process I got more scary prompts before nook rebooted. I nervously hit Y. Works Great

  • @nmcmahon11 the only reason it was scary was because you followed the old video and not the new one ;)

  • Albert, great video. Very helpful. We've gotten all the way to the NookandZergy and our device number shows up, but it shows "offline" to the right (not sure if that's a problem) and then when we click "y" it says:

first need to make sure you didnt lie about it showing up, I also need to check for root and a sdcard

and then it just hangs, and nothing else happens. I've tried re-extracting, going back through the process, etc. but nothing works. Can you help? Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Hey Albert, I've been trying to root for hours and I have the same problem over and over. I ran "runmefirst", then I ran "Nook&Zergy" but the root is unsuccessful:

    1. It shows my Nook tablet item number (100% it is the tablet) and says offline

    2. It says could not find C:\ntroot\Nook&Zergy\build.prop

    3. Your device is not a Nook Tablet

    4. My Nook is properly debugged (Both USB debugging is checked)

    5. Sometimes it shows have two devices?

Please help ASAP and Merry Christmas! Thanks in advance.

  • remove all other usb deices. reboot pc, make sure you are extracting all files before you run them@rsetha01

  • @albertcwertz Running into same problem. Was hanging after hitting "y" in NookandZergy with:

first need to make sure you didnt lie about it showing up, I also need to check for root and a sdcard

    (see earlier comment)

So I tried to invoke the commands manually and it gets a little further, but errors out unable to find build.prop -- looks like something is missing. Tried to reboot, re-extract, but that didn't help. Advice?

  • @randomdawgable try redownloading nook zergy and starting over. there may b=have been a corrupt file released. redownload all files and restart process. may have to switch to new pc

  • @randomdawgable try redownloading nook zergy and starting over. there may b=have been a corrupt file released. redownload all files and restart process. may have to switch to new pc

  • @albertcwertz rebooted it (system stored it twice), started over many times, extracted all files properly, used 3rd party software to uninstall all extra android looking drivers. The number for nook always pops up, but is always "offline" and it continues missing the C:\ntroot\Nook&Zergy\build.prop file (even after redownload). It's quite a hopeless situation, call me a noob, but this seems a little more difficult than it should be. I have the same problem as randomdawgable. Corrupted files?

  • @rsetha01 maybe. try redownloading the package and another PC, did you try running runmefirst.bat before hand?

  • @rsetha01 used two different computers, used two different nooks, opened on xmas day. Still 1.4.0 stock. Will probably end up taking to a technician or a smart friend. haha what's options do I have left?

  • @rsetha01 you try watching the video on usb trouble shooting or reading comments in that thread on XDA?

  • Albert, I followed your video and I successfully rooted my nook. I have a question about apps and the market. First off I don't have an SD card yet so that may be my problem. Ok so I go to the market and download Words With Friends, install it, then open it...well it switches screens like its about to launch but then force closes out and an error message of "sorry the app has stopped unexpectedly". Do you know how to fix this? cause i'm having the problem with some other apps also

  • @troym40 Also another example is I just tried to download the facebook app and on the market page (at the top of the screen) it says "your device isn't compatible with this item"...help?

  • @troym40 there is still alot with the android market that is not fully compatible with the nook, like facebook. the words with friends I am not sure. Sometimes a reboot can fix things. Much of this wont be fully fixed until we get passed the signed boot loader. This is the best many of the hackers can do right now until we can rom. Barnes and noble really stripped this thing down and it hardly has the normal stuff. We need to start from scratch and build a custom rom. Hopefully in next few month

  • Please help, whenever I get to 3:48 my tablet doesn't appear like that. It auto loads the default USB drivers and appears under Disk Drives. I have googled how to stop this and since Win7 Home doesn't have gpedit.msc, I can't seem to fix this. It's pissing me off. The only other OS I have is Vista and that doesn't have gpedit.msc either!

  • @TBleader you try the program at the end of the part 1 video to install usb drivers?

  • @albertcwertz What part 1 video? I was taken to this video from XDA.

  • @TBleader there are update videos follow links in video description

  • Albert please help me when i press y on nook zergy it tells me:

'find' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

    operable program or batch file.

your device is NOT a nook tablet! Please try again with either usb debugging pro

perly enabled, or with the correct device hooked up. You might also need to inst

    all drivers!

just incase you missed doing it, running runmefirst.bat

Please unplug your nook device before continuing!

I already installed the drivers aswell. Please help!

  • @markenyou are you using a nook tablet and NOT a nook color?

  • @albertcwertz Yeah Im using a nook tablet and its telling that its not :(

  • @markenyou try running the run me forst before trying to root with nook zergy. for some people run me first must be run first

  • i got it to work finally. The problem was that system32 was not located at my path folder and it fixed everything.

  • hey albert....simple question i hope.

The adw launcher option will not come up on the home screen anymore. My wife was playing around with it for the first time and clicked the "use this as defualt" box when the adw/home popup appeared. She chose the B@N home instead of the adw option

now I cant figure out how to get to the adw andrion homescreen

how do I re-enable the adw/Home option screen since I cant get the popup to appear when I press the N home button???

    thx

  • @lurchead download go launcher apk. do a search and it should pop up. downloading another launcher will force this option to reappear. Or download it through the market. eitherway

  • @albertcwertz

Thanks a million! worked like a charm..I was able to get back to the ADW launcher and the I just deleted the go launcher and everything is back to normal!

  • Hi there. I used this process to root my nook tablet and everything was working perfectly until it died and I recharged it and when I turned it on I couldn't use the android market and my keyboard had returned to normal and I am having the same problem that staceya0716 is having! help please!

  • @danceluva411 sounds like it downloaded the 1.4.1 update. follow the instructions at XDA how to undo this.

  • So, just now, I turned my nook on and it had the n in the corner under notifications. I opened that and it said it had done a system update to (I think) android 1.4.1 anyway, some of my apps are not working. Its saying they aren't installed and my android market won't work (amazon market still working) when I click on the market, it asks if I want to add an account, I click yes and it takes me to the home screen. Everything was good until update. HELP!!

  • @staceya0716 i have a video on this uploading now. wont finally be up until tomorrow morning is a 5 gig video file. I really should quit uploading in HD

  • Albert, got a question for you. I rooted my Nook two days ago & everything seems fine. Now when i power up my Tablet i get an error message.

Sorry the Nook Unroot (process com.indirect.nook.unroot) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

I did unroot it after i realized i made an error but then rooted it again. I believe this message is from the unroot peocess

    Can you help me?

    Thanks

  • @SMalone820 i am not sure, i have never seen that before.

  • Hi Albert, I used this to root my nook tablet and it works great. I am wondering if this works for the nook color as well. I have heard the color had a recent update, so I'm not sure if it's running the same android stuff or not. I know your steps work and don't want to risk bricking my color by using someone else's steps. Do you know if it will work on that or not? I need to get it rooted by Christmas. Thanks!

  • Is this free

  • @BoomSquad21SS um...yes

  • I did everything you did but when I did the zergy part my number doesn't show up what do I do now? Thanks :)

  • @rcano84 try another pc, or use the usb driver program mentioned at end of video

  • @albertcwertz Ok so I have debugging enabled and the device manager shows the android. Now when I do the red screen there is nothing listed am I doing some wrong or missing something? Thanks

  • @rcano84 try rebooting disconnecting and try again or try another pc

  • @albertcwertz reboot the computer or the nook or both Thanks

  • @albertcwertz I rebooted the both and still on the red screen it doesn't find the nook tablet device. not sure what to do thanks.

  • @albertcwertz I used another pc and it worked thanks so much!!!!

  • @staceya0716 this does not work for the nook color.

  • wont recognize my device on red screen

  • Anyone know how to access Google Maps? I saw someone who had rooted and had the Maps application on there, but I can't download it.

Also an alternative keyboard would be awesome. Haven't found one that works on a rooted NT yet and the default keyboard is AWFUL.

  • @lostatlimbo new root method installs new keyboard. Watch part 2 of updated video

  • does this work for the nook color as well?

  • i download the file to my nook but i got an error message stating that apk file is not supported. help.

  • I followed the steps to root my 5-day old nook tab. It works! Thanks a million.

  • The camera was bad.

  • So i have done all the debugging mode stuff, but it still doesnt show up with the Nook Tablet /!\ and i've done the troubleshooting thing on the other thread, but still get the same results, and had you plugged your nook into the computer before this video? if so how do i go back to a point where its as if it was never plugged in?

  • @InS4NeFISTz did you try another computer? to factory restor nook to stock, hold N button down at same time as turning power on and continue to hold N and let go of power until enter factory reset.

  • @InS4NeFISTz I had the same problem. I have 2 tablets. First worked fine, but second wouldn't work. Went to 2nd PC and it worked fine. Not sure how to do multiple Tablets on a single PC.

  • I read the Nook Color has bluetooth if you root it. Does this tablet?

  • @jenniC79 I believe it might, but without a kernel right now we cant unlock it. We need to get the signed boot loader removed

  • did mine perfect but i also have an android phone, whenever i get go launcher ex from android market it sends it to my phone not nook tablet. (when i search "go" it does'nt find but it installs on my phone instead) What do I do?

  • @baronshiloh make sure you open launcher in market on nook, dont access it in nook browser

  • @albertcwertz I don't understand did it just like in the video but instead of downloading to nook it went to my phone. then when i went to type "go" it didn't show up in the list. when i went back to android store to try again it says "installed". when i try to download again it asks to install on another device but "phone" is the only option. i guess my android account is set to my phone but i don't know how to get it to my nook.

  • I've got my Nook rooted and I can access and download/install from the Android Market. But if I try to download anything from anywhere else I get "unable to parse." I was finally able to get the Amazon App Store on it through the email link, I can download apps, but when I try to install, still get the "unable to parse" error. Allow installation from unknown sources is checked! Anybody have any ideas?

  • @thatgurlcarolyn it may require SD because it is not mounted in systems folder, android market is placed in systems folder so it accesses the B&N partition.

  • what is this root thing? i just got my nook and i want android apps i google searched it and stumbled on this someone please explain it look very intresting. thank you

  • @hotsexybabe05 root gains you permission to break security placed by B&N. This will let you install things B&N blocks

  • @albertcwertz i really want to try this but im affarid i will prob mess it up. is their a place you can go to get this done? im really slow in the technology department, please give me some suggestion

  • Worked beautifully! Thanks so much for the great video!!

  • The app brain installer isn't working for me. It just keeps taking me to a screen that says Download the free AppBrain Android app. It never downloads anything though and when I try to click continue it says app not installed...

  • unroot nook tablet

  • can you please show us how to UNROOT it please.

  • @daghostpunisher the unroot command from emulator is not working, use es root explorer to manually remove files in system directory, to super user last. I dont guarantee this will work, proceed at your own risk. Should have a problem as long as you only do the files you need to

  • @albertcwertz /system/app/ files (CarHomeGoogle.apk, FOTAKill.apk, GenieWidget.apk, GoogleBackupTransport.apk, GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk, GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk, GoogleFeedback.apk, GooglePartnerSetup.apk, GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk, GoogleServicesFramework.apk, LatinImeTutorial.apk, MarketUpdater.apk, MediaUploader.apk, NetworkLocation.apk, OneTimeInitializer.apk. Talk.apk, Vending.apk

  • @albertcwertz Also remove rm /system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.maps.xml

    rm /system/etc/permissions/features.xml

    rm /system/framework/com.google.android.maps.jar

    rm /system/lib/libvoicesearch.so

    rm /data/app/com.noshufou.android.su

    rm /system/bin/su

  • @daghostpunisher check link in video description for better instructions for unroot workaround

  • My computer recognized the nook tablet and put it as a disk drive. Can I still do this?

  • ok im new to tablets in general. i tried using the full root but it says for security your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from android market. is there a way to get around this or is there a step that i missed like an unspoken thing for rooting...

  • @albertcwertz thanx for the reply... though i didnt get anything useful from the xda forums, i created a solution myself. Its pretty simple... deactivate the device and let it factory reset. once its on again, enable usb debugging and 3rd party apps and then run the zergy again :)

  • @albertcwertz I followed all the instructions and then ran the zergy but... it installed zergy but then didnt prompt me to install gapps!!! now i have no idea how to get access to the market... Please helpppp! thanks

  • @ammarsuleman check xda forum, many have had similar issues. answers there

  • @ammarsuleman i just did mine last night, took about 20 minutes to do but must admit that the instruction was quite clear. I spent some times to do my own usb driver work.

still not able to use 12GB space reserved by the NOOK. but I can tell that folks who flash and related flash. This is a perfect device for it. I used lots of flash websites (starfall.com for example) without problem. Not sure if full rooting still offers the flash capability

  • so, after rooting it and gaining market access, there's nothing stopping me from installing (launcher of choice here) and using it as a full-on android tablet?
