Joke was at the end this soap was pulling in 10m viewers which the bbc would give its right arm for now, once they had got rid of the dead wood actors that where in it at the start and got some decent actors in this soap had potential, marcus tandy was a legend.

I loved Eldarado and so did my mum quickly as a child it became one of my favourite shows. I hated when BBC gave into the papers drivel about Eldarado and cancelled it.

I loved the way the final episode tied up every single one of the loose ends - it was so funny, and full of bravado, thumbing its nose up at the critics. This soap was tat, but in a good way...

i loved this programme,the song and tune are the greatest ever on tv,some of the actors were brilliant like marcus tandy,pilar and drew but some were shocking(they even spoke in french with no subtitles!!),this was why it was cut,great shame

Tony Holland was not given adequate time to create high octane, legendary characters. If he'd been given a few more months to realise his actual vision, we would have had characters on this show on the same par as Den and Angie. Marcus Tandy came close.

Forget the song a minute if Alan Yentob had't of cancelled the programme it would've been huge by now. I do hope the BBC revive it in the near future because other soaps are going down hill just look at how old an and miserable EastEnders is getting, Coronation Street is well and truly past it's sell- by date and the dallas of the dale Emmerdale is slowly sinking and other soap barely get any viewers at all just cancel them all for all I care.

The BBC made a huge mistake by not making this a spin-off/sister show of EASTENDERS. They could have Angie go down there for 6 months to run a pub and various EE characters like Sam, David and Ricky could come down to stay for brief periods of time. I mentioned it to Anita Dobson herself once and she threw her head back, laughed and said "Ah, but that sounds too American and ambitious for the likes of them. That's always been their problem-they're afraid to think BIG!"

The only soap I've ever liked. I joined the 'Save Eldorado Campaign'. It was getting 8 - 9 Million viewers towards the end. Very respectable. If I won a double roll-over I'd probably produce a sequel. Marcus would be back and running a huge Magaluff style nightclub.... :-)

Regarding the question of the final line of the lyrics, it's "Eldorado's only gold in dreams", a reference to El Dorado, the mythical lost city of gold.

Point 1 - This was a great soap, esp the last few months of it.

Point 2 - The BBC gave into the media who were against it from the outset.

Point 3. Had the BBC grown some balls and kept it, it would now be one of the big UK soaps.

@garymonc Yeah I agree. Eldorado really found its feet in the last few months and was getting more viewers. If only the BBC had stuck with it a little longer I really think it would have been a great success.

@garymonc - Exactly; it just needed more time. It had already vastly improved by the time they cancelled it. I bet the BBC were kicking themselves two years later when Phil Redmond had dropped a plane on Beckindale and turned 'Emmerdale' into a genuine player. They could easily have built on those 8 million viewers.

What a wonderful soap, I used to drift off relaxing on holiday 'a dream' sure but at the end of the day our dreams are free.
