  • Awesome!

  • Hey brother, you can sure play guitar with some wicked style too, great vid bud... And thanks for subscribing to my channel I'm super honored! Take care and keep ripping!

  • sweet guitar

  • GREAT PLAYIN'!!

  • Hi ! it is much fun to listen to this kind of guitar playing, like it very much.

  • i here 2 songs in this i here wildwood flower and the claw by jerry reed

  • YOU RULE

  • That was beautiful

  • Sweet lesson and nice guitar!

  • It involves your pick and your fingers.......oh ok that makes it easier.

  • it's actually hybrid picking

but that was a good demo

  • I'm confused .I'm looking for LONESOME ROAD BLUES TAB and there it IS NOT COINCIDENCE with brad EXECUTION , someone able to direct? I know the left hand

  • great lesson.Thank you very much Brad

  • I think the picking part is relatively self explanatory. How do you learn the notes? That's what I want to know. Probably along with everyone else.

  • Well this guy's damn good, lol... would be nice to get a lesson on this song though.

  • hehe I try this piece of technique its so cool.

  • sip... good lick..

    feel like sapi-boy..

  • James Burton invented chiking picking

  • is he playing a piticular song ?????

  • @coreyandjack123

The first part is tabbed out in the March /April volume of Flatpicking Magazine. Thanks Brad!

  • @goffadams what volume and number ??

  • @superguitarras111 Volume 14, number 3 good instructional mag. well worth the subscription price.

  • Is this an excerpt from instructional video, i'd like to see both hands

  • Me too. Please show us how to use the left hand in this piece

  • @Hd28cw you know that?

  • Brad you have just inspired me to play flatpicking bluegrass :-) Thank You Jorge ♪♫

  • I'm going to chop my hands off now...

  • ... Hi Brad.

  • what kind of chords are u playing. are they mostly open chords?

  • where can i find the tab of Lonesome Road Blues ? i cant find the good one :(

  • Thanks for the instruction.

  • thats chicking not chicken

  • Thank you. I just purchased an Alvarez. Te Takamines have a neck profile you have to be comfortable with. I find them too chunky.

  • What guitar is this and what preamp system does it use?

  • It's a Merill: one of the finest pre-war Martin reproductions ever made. The pickup is an LR Baggs, (I believe a Ribbon,) which I think has been replaced by the Element.

    Baggs make great, great stuff.

Brad now mainly uses Takamine Flatpicker guitars, which were copied from the Merrill, and have a state-of-the-art pickup system. They're about 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of a Merrill and have the pickup installed. They sound and play incredibly well, and are handmade.

    Definitely check them out!

  • Kentucky Fried Chicken

    Is finger lickin'

    chicken pickin' good !

  • Same thing. Chicken picking has more of a spank though, if you know what I mean.

  • Thanks for posting this video. Are you using your fingernails or just the pads?

  • sounds like pads

  • awesome....thnx

  • Thanks Brad! Glad i found your video.. helps me out quite a bit.

  • Brad Great picking!.Please understand one thing the negative comment trolls are ALWAYS present on You Tube some JERK made one about CHET!. You could put a Video of Jesus walking on water some Butthole would say,"Yeah well the stride he's using is ALL WRONG,I also don't like his Sandals, looks like he may need a haircut also, then give Jesus a 2 or 3 rating. I chalk it up to JEALOUS Syndrome!.Most that make comments have NO Videos so We can comment on them,NO Pictures just RIDICULE!,Thanks!Great!

  • Very nice Brad, that's nice style Cam Bujold NB Canada

  • I understand that Brad truly is a guitar guru, but I must agree with several on here and say that this is simply hybrid picking - possibly 'chicken pickin' is another term for hybrid? I don't know, but this technique is hugely popular within the acoustic disciplines, I don't see whats special about it (apart from Brad's wonderful demo!)

  • NOT all all surprised WHO ran you down?,A LIMEY!.There would be a SWASTIKA in the Old Union Jack if not for us. Brits Ridicule EVERYONE!,for definition see SIMON COWELL:)

  • Cry out my name with the game we play ? online now

    DATEHERWOW (.COM)

  • That sounds so cool

  • Real nice sounds and you're a great teacher. Communicates the simplicity of it. Thank you.

  • This is great stuff man. About time someone did lessons without dumbing them down too much. Thank!

  • I have watched several vids here trying to figure this chickin thing out. After watching this, I believe I can learn it. Thanks SO much for sharing!

  • WOW!!! Great tutor-stuff without any doubt! Can anybody tell me where i can get this in tabs or tutorial book!LOL...

  • Thats cool stuff, thanks for putting it on here.

can folky songs be played this way like tom joad ?

  • I kept thinking you were going to say "chicken shit". Just thought I'd share that with you.

  • great teacher, great musician, thanks.

  • you helped me a lot!

    chzeers z

  • That's not chicken pickin. That is indeed Hybrid picking.

Chicken picken is "a technique involving choking notes to produce a percussive snap tat conjurs up the sound of a chicken clucking"

Example. pick a note with your first finger and then pluck the same note again with your pick but with your first finger right behind it on the same string to mute it.

Im having a hell of a time getting this technique down. Hybrind and chicken pickin are not the same.

  • this is

  • sorry accidently hit enter.but this is traditional "chicken pickin'...for the record, for anyone learning...placing your finger behind the note your hitting is in no way going to "mute" the note.thats only relevant in slide or dobro playing..chickin pickin' is all about right hand technique.the term comes from the fact that it copy's the banjo "clawhammer" style..hence "chicken"...this is no way intended to put down "ming746"...just to let others know...thanks brad!!

  • Sorry but that is not true. No one has to or should take my words as gosspel. All I can suggest is you cosult legitment country musical sources. Books or interviews with the real deals. james Burton, Albert Lee, Ricky SKaggs, Ray FLacke..etc..etc. I can assure you the books and those gentleman I mentioned will confirm what I have said.

  • ok first for you to say "real deal"..bro you need to realize who's page your on.just cause you dont see brad on tv,or magazines.he is a badass and knows his shit.secondly,my point was that you can confuse ppl when you talk about something YOU dont know how to relate.the "muting" can be done in a number of ways i.e. palm, lifting finger(not to the note behind it,that is a pull-off)or dropping another finger of the fretting hand onto the played string.i put up a vid to show what i mean

  • It is also called chickin pickin. Long before the muting stuff.

  • does anyone have tabs for this??

    or any of it??

  • I was told by my teacher that this was called Hybrid picking? I'm confused are they different or just the same thing?

  • They are very much similar, but when played in this style people tend to call it Chickin Pickin', at least to my knowledge, correct me if im wrong :P

  • I went into Gruhn's Guitar shop in Nashville and noticed it's different than any guitar shop i've ever been to. Everyone in there was playing country music and everone was a bad ass player. Not like guitar center where you rarely hear anyone with talent and they play CORN OR DETH METAL

  • korn or Death Metal*

lmao i know wat u mean tho

  • hahahahahaha yeah

  • Ok, that was very nice!! But I wanna see the scales that the guy made!!! Stop givin' too many importance to the fingering and let us know more 'bout the scales that are made! That would be a nice better touch...

  • hey, brad... Great tone on your acoustic! Is that a pickup in the sound hole?

  • How EVIL...Chick-in' Picki'n...

  • mooooooore!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • cool

  • any idea of what kid of guitars he uses

  • Takamine

  • That's not a Takamine, Maybe Breedlove Revival

    Better then the big M's

  • Only thing i learnt there was he can play the guitar

  • its a demo not a lesson

  • Did you even watch past 1:50? Everything after that was instruction.

  • @fossway ah yes twas just a demonstration

  • @fossway lol swear

  • can you do the same thing with a thumbpick

  • No you can't get the same good sound with a thumbpick

  • Great lesson but I'd love it if he had run through a few of the things he was doing with his left hand. Anyone have any idea what he was doing from 0.46 to about 0.55? Sounded super cool.

  • The thing by the sound hole is probably a humidfier, and hillbilly chicken pickin school probably refers to jamin with hillbilly chicken pickers.

  • Great place to learn.

    Thanks for posting.

  • hillbilly chicken picking school?

  • Bluegrass sounds good!

  • Pick with your fingers.

  • whats that thing by the sound hole?

  • It's an LR Baggs dual-source preamp with volume and mixing controls for a pickup system he has installed on the guitar.

  • yep, this guy is definitely qualified to do this demonstration.

  • Very Excellent!! Love this style! Thanks for the Demo.

  • Great demo and great style;)5 Stars yeha Chicken pickin lickin good;)

  • yeah!!!!!

  • tabs?

  • Is there any tabs for the second tune you play? I really love it!

  • thanks nice

  • Not only a great guitar player but also a gfreat techer. Those are two separate virtues! Thanks.

  • Okay, this time I really mean it. But I just learned something watching this video! Guess I better get to work, huh? Alice

  • Thanks Brad for the instruction....I'm miles away from this, but still very interesting and nice of you to share with us noobies. Your skills are deep!

  • Sounds awesome man, very Kentucky like. Good job keep it up.

  • man I have never really liked playin country music on guitar until now... thanx

  • :O :O :O I love that sound!!!

  • That was killer and sounded absolutely cool. I loved it.

  • Wow, new skill to me, very good!

  • u can't do that on acoustic..lol ...very cool stuff

  • Hi Brad. Do you have an instructional DVD for the Chickin'Pickin Method? If not should make one. I have been playing since I was six with no formal training. My Father taught me 4 chords and I went on from there. I only dream of being as great as you. Thanks again you are a great inspiration.

    Fred G. Iowa - USA.

  • Dang Brad, play this on your Tele and you'll take it to the next level.

Lov ya brother, Forrest Lee Jr
