Hi, I suffer from posterior shin splints. I play football once a week due to the pain but I want to play more.I have tried gel insoles which have not made much of a difference and it is difficult to find a good pair to fit into football boots. How could using tape help me play at least twice a week? I don't want to see a podiatrist and pay a shit load to get custom made insoles before trying alternative solutions. After every game the pain and swelling is there and i do stretch before the game
@mfshah2007 Have you had a gait analysis to know if you need arch support insoles or flat shock absorbing ones. This doesn't cost that much usually at a specialist running shop. Taping can help to reduce the pull of the muscles on the bone
@sportsinjuryclinic I was told that my arches were low and that shock-absorbing insoles would help.As far as a gait analysis goes, I'm not sure what that means? But I visited a sports clinic regarding this problem. Whether i needed shock-absorbing insoles or arch support insoles were not mentioned specifically. The physio said if shock-absorbing insoles didn't work then I should visit their podiatrist and get a pair made for me. Regarding taping, would you advise playing football with taping on?
@mfshah2007 If your arches are low then you more than likely need arch support insoles which are raised up on the inner foot to support the arch. Gait analysis is where your walking or running style is observed to determine if you overpronate etc and what kind of insoles / running shoes you would need.
@sportsinjuryclinic The physio didn't make me walk or run but just examined me in a standing position as well as closely examining my tendons, bones and muscles. The thing is it is quite difficult to find a pair that will fit into football boots AND that feel comfortable at the same time. I will look for a different pair meantime I will try playing with tape. Should I use the same taping technique that is shown in this video?
yes i have been in and out of physical therapy multiple times and have been so many doctors about my ankle but not within the past couple months so i have not talked to a doctor about the pain in my shins i have been getting
could you develop shin splints from a weak ankle? i have a terrile ankle problem that effects the way i walk and the pain is all the way up to my knee. i have been expierencing pain that seems like shin splints but i haven't been doing running or anything..how can i tell if it is shin splints or another issue with my ankle
@fitchchick411 Ankle problems can definitely cause shin splints, although they tend to only occur if you are running or walking lots. Have you had any treatment for your ankle? Or at least had a professional look at it?
Wow. 5 years of this shit. tried this for footy weekend just gone. huge difference, could feel a slight pain just from the soreness before having used the tape. but thats great. thanks heaps. hopefully it sustains it!!!!!
I suffered from shin splints about 2 years ago and got arch support for them, but only a few months after the original injury. I tried to start training a couple of times within the first year after my injury, but I kept relapsing and feeling pain. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this pain? I simply gave up after a year (it's been over 2 years now) but I would really like to start playing soccer again!
@DaTux91 Hi. You probably need more treatment than just insoles although this is a good start. Massage, taping, stretching and strengthening exercises should all be used.
@sportsinjuryclinic Thanks for responding. I've started doing strengthening exercises just yesterday and one of the coaches in my club (not my coach) told me to make sure I stretch a lot. He told me to get down on my behind, spread my legs and stretch toward my feet one at a time after each training. Is this a good way to stretch for shin splints? For the massage: is that something I can do myself as well or should I see a professional for it?
@DaTux91 You definately need to see a professional for sports massage. That stretch is fine for the shin muscles but you also nee to make sure you are stretching your calf muscles as tightness here can contribute.
@sportsinjuryclinic Okay thanks again for the advice! Hopefully I'll be up and running again soon. Any idea on how long it could take to recover? Weeks? Months? Or is that hard to tell?
@DaTux91 you have been damaged by heal strike and you have to learn how to run again.... you have to learn to run barefoot, I have had shin splints for 20 years and they are always there just below the surface.. all caused by soft spongy trainers... you MUST learn to run barefoot.. do this (it will take a year) and all the while read and read read Gordon Piries Book "Running fast and injury free" also... use edema massage 24 hours after shins splints flare up
Hi, i roller skate & dance in heels and for the last 2 or 3 years i've been getting what i call shin splints. the pain is getting worse and it comes and goes. from reading i've learned that shin splints generally occur on the INSIDE of the leg (big toe), but i'm getting pain on the outside of my lower leg. i'm thinking it would have to be muscle imbalance. will taping work for the outside of the leg and what can be done to correct muscle balance?
@drehaljacuzzi Hi. There is a reverse taping technique you can use to tape suspected cases of compartment syndrome which is more likely what you have on the outside of the bone. go to sportsinjuryclinic . net and serch for compartment syndrome. Good luck!
want to cure shin splints, barefoot/minimalist shoe running. i urge everyone who suffers from shin splints to look up barefoot running on utube. lots of good info
i play alot of football and this problem seems to come and go every so often. i have a sleeve i put over my shin to compress it. thinking about trying tape aswell. except on the video and other videos ive seen u talk about pain on the inside if the shin. mine is more along the middle and the outside. i always thought shin splints was the muscle along the front of the leg starting to pull away from the shin. can you help me?
@benjamen92 Yes, true shin splints is pain along the inside of the shin bone. Pain on the outer side of the bone is more likely another condition such as compartment syndrome
I am really strugling with my shins, to start they don't bother me but hal wa through trainning, my word the pain is unbeleivable, let's hope this method works, also cand you put tape underneath the tape you wrap diagnoally around your shin?
@Lowdninja thts wut its been like for me for the past three weeks.. i mean after sitting down for dinner tonight for like an hour wen i went to get up they reallyy hurt
@Lowdninja yup, shin splits will hurt like that. what i found to be very useful was barefoot running. when i started running (about a year ago) i couldnt run very far without getting crippled by shin splits but after a friend suggested barefoot running i was able to run for longer periods and after about a month i could jog with shoes on. another thing i did was use pre wrap and ankle supports (when i wore shoes).
@182below0@182below0 idk i noticed that when i run with shoes on, i tend to land on my heels very hard and push with the ball of my foot, when i run barefoot i completely change the way i run (well i still use my feet lol) i land using almost the entirety of my back foot and push off with the entire front including toes. I say give it a shot, if it doesnt work for u then u lost absolutely nothing, right?
I just recently got shin splints, but it is still in the early stages and hasn't gotten too bad yet. I haven't started taping, but I want to because it has been gradually getting worse. How long can you keep the tape on? Do you just put it on right before your workout and take it off afterwards? Or can you leave it on all day?
@trgerrild im not completely sure about that kind of tape but theres stuff called KT tape that works really good for shin splints. im actually using it now. it comes in precut strips and applies differently, but it works pretty good. 12 bucks a roll, but it lasts a while.

Hi. Its unlikely. Pain from shin splints is usually the lower half of the shin. Possibly patella tendinopathy

is it still the same thing if the pain just right below my knee?

@xfightcityx Barefoot running can certainly take the impact out of running as it forces you to run on your toes

Yes you should put it on just before training and take it off straight after, because you sweat and the tape becomes lose and useless ;)
