This film is so underrated! AKINY was a prophetic film - well ahead of its time. The message is more relevant today than it was on its initial release.
Chaplin should have died in the states. He was suppose to end his life here. That damn J. Edgar Hoover had his way with so many. Now this genious is far away buried in Switzerland. I hope to see his grave one day. Long live Charlie Chaplin.
Pauline Kael thought this movie was perhaps the worst film ever made by a major director, and I do think that's harsh. The movie is uneven as hell, and it was made on the relative cheap while Chaplin was in virtual exhile in England, but damn if there's not plenty of comic energy still shown by Chaplin throughout. He remained a master of comic timing and facial expression.
Also, it was really his one cinematic shot at satiring what today we still might call "post-war modern life," and he was able to get a good zinger or two there as well.
Chaplin was a great ,actor, director, composer ,a visionary ...a comic ,satire genius..

Almost Pythonesque. Truely ahead of its time.

I agree! J. Edgar Hoover was a freak and should have left both Charlie Chaplin and John Dillinger alone!
