As a self-defense instructor for 18 years (and a martial artist that's studied several systems), I have to say to you righteous doubters out there (particularly the women), that you're wrong. The point of women's self defense is to offer women who otherwise are taught only that they could never defend themselves against an attacker, that they actually could - and then to give them realistic options to do so. These options work, particularly when the attacker isn't expecting it. Statistics agree.
so sorry this pisses everyone off, but you have to understand that most women who are attacked are not attacked by men looking for a fight. the men who usually attack women are looking for sex, and don't expect women to fight back i agree with Gruberman. The guys in the suit are going to attack you as hard as they can. Hell, one of the guys in the suit is an actual cage fighter. Don't talk as if you know what this is really about. I don't see you getting on the ground and fighting.
I've also seen mS. Snrotland's writing and all I can say is she grossly underestimates the chaos and gravity of real attacks and how to fight back. In one article she even gloats about how "DANGEROUS" she is! DANGEROUS? OMG! She's a chubby middle-aged gal who apparently took or taught a few classes and truth is if she was attacked for real, speaking as a cop, she would get the crap beat out of her IMHO.
sorry but this is awful - the self defense kicks and strikes these women deliver are lame and weak and slow and would NEVER stop a committed attacker. are you kidding? my seven year old kicks better and stronger on the ground. wtf? (oh, and a real man hits back -- hard!) for good demos of self defense for women go to krav maga or bjj (brazilian jujitsu) or check out wing chun or dr ruthless. this is feel good crap. sorry.
I am very familiar with Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu; my late wife was fluent in both. But you and I both know it's not for everyone: IMPACT is. And it's not just "feel good crap" either: we had a success story just a couple of weeks ago where an IMPACT student fought off her attacker and won. BTW, "Dr. Ruthless" is an ally of Ellen's and recommends her book.
I agree with idfgirl. all fighting systems have some success stories, but the techniques shown here would NOT stop a committed attacker. it's almost laughable. i bet "ellen" has NEVER been in a real fight or had to defend against a REAL pumped, up hard-hitting male aggressor. This is more about a social agenda, the self defense part is full of BS: Get real. The ground fighting sucks, the paddded guy lets them win. i don't care what the style is but this ain't realistic or good. word.
man, i totally agree with brooklyn. NO dude is gonna stand there and let you slam his nuts or head like the stooges they use. these attacks are not even CLOSE to being realistic. (Does he ever strike back?) This may be OK for setting boundaries or for the drunk guy who isn't that rough but to defend agasint violent attack or rape, this won't cut it. i'm sick of academics and PC pundits (mostly upscale white women) spouting self defense shit they don't know about. This is embarrasing crap.
@idfgirl100 What a pompous ass you are. You are missing the point. The main value here is psychological more than any specific training. It's psychological empowerment!
It was pointed out to me that the last version of this trailer (with 456 views up until today) had a problem: the sub-titles were cutoff. You can thank iMovie 08's automated "YouTube" upload feature for that. I fixed it and re-uploaded the trailer on behalf of Ellen. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Lila Downs. Isn't she wonderful? Mother from Oaxaca and father from Minnesota, USA

@darla007 Do you even know what PC means? It has nothing to do with self defense.
