looks like a wonderful hobby , I've never eaten abalone but I hear it's great. I do inlay work and use lots of abalone, mop, exotic woods etc. I'd love to harvest some shells myself, I think I would enjoy that...thanks for posting!
I try an gift most of my shells to local indigenous people who carve traditional adornments for dance regalia. Kirby cleans up the big ones really well and we both carve jewlry, and fishooks and such from some as well.
Great video. What a great flat day out there. Looked like an average tide which I think is better because the kelp seems to kinda pile up on the big minus tide days. My mother has a place in Sea Ranch and I used to go there a lot. 10-11" abs used to be trophies back then but were somewhat available if you looked for a while and the 9.5" abs were everywhere. Reminds me of some good times camping and making abalone poppers with the jalepenos inside em. Can you still get 4 a day out there?
I never ever realized people chased Abalone based purely on size. We are from NZ. Massive Paua in SOME parts of NZ. Abalone are literally a dime a dozen. On one particular island you can see thousands of Abalone in the rocks at low tide. And I mean thousands.
I can not get enough of this video. Any time some one pulls a ten is something to notice of, If you are interested I would like to go diving with you some time if so send me a meesage.
This particular one was only about 15ft deep. Unusual in all respects as it was out in the open. Look deep in caves and cracks that look like they couldn't even house an ab. Dive a lot, look a lot, you'll find one if you're persistant. However these are the oldies so try not to take too many of em. Peace.
There are very few abs this far north, scallops are abundant everywhere along California's coast though because most people don't recognize them and they are typically pretty deep. These were freak occurances as they were found in as shallow as 12ft. Most start at abot 30ft. Glad you liked the vid. if you decide to persue them, cut away everything but the abducter muscle and discard as these parts are poisonous most of the year
We'd already speared a few fish larger than the ones in the film. One of the lings was leagal (barely) in the footage, the other ling and Cabazone were youngins. Bag limit on scallops is 10 per day, no size limit, but there's not much meet in the dinks so it pays to persue larger ones. Peace.

@norcallovenature What the fuck you moron...the guage is a 10 inch guage. How the fuck do you conclude an Ab that measures up in a 10 guage is 7?
