@Heartoftheclock To answer your central question, probably not, the sharp stories are quit good for historical accuracy (apart from the fact that most of the characters and some of the battles are fictional) however this one is probably the worst for inaccuracy (until the ones set in Indra) as it was conceived more to end the run and send him out in a blase of glory rather than to educate people about Waterloo. No one's ever lamed these books and films are anything more then swashbuckling fun.
@Heartoftheclock for the most part, that is. He does include a historical note at the end of each book to apologise for any liberties or discrepancies
@johnamarante8888 Outrage? What outrage? The quote you talk about is at the last moment of Waterloo, when Cambronne formed the last square to defend. In this part, the french are attacking, not defending. Cambronne says his famous word at another moment of the battle, but it isn't showed here. It's as simple. Anyway, many other important moments aren't showed neither: Blutcher's arrival for example.
I'm with Pat. Aim for his belly. My viscious side wants this turkey to die miserably for killing Hagman. The sweet singer and my favorite of the Chosen. Too bad he didn't finish the job. How the kid lived so long without his troops killing him I don't know. Probably for the writer to prolong the episode. I think Pat leaves because he knows Sharpe is going to die. He has a family. He loves Sharpe but will not go on to be killed. What do you al think?
@Thebradycarroll I've read that Harris' first name was never mentioned anywhere, but that the character was named in tribute to Benjamin Randell Harris of the 95th Rifles, whose memoir about his experiences during the peninsular campaign, was a major source for Cornwell's original research for the Sharpe novels.
@GrawrawrLPs "The only time when they weren't complete push overs." France has had many glorious moments besides the Napoleonic Era. The armies of Louis XIV destroyed their enemies in many wars.

I like it how the french never stop to shoot in Sharpe, they just keep walking foward, gets shot and then fall back.... If they had actually done that in history, Napoleon wouldn´t have won a single battle lol...
@hherlevdk That is the tactic Napoleon used...he would concentrate a column of troops at a single point on the line, accepting that the front would take bad losses (although the range of muskets made this a short time). At perhaps 25meteres or less they (may) give a volley and smash into the line, using the weight of the column to smash it, then roll it up. did anyone else notice that when the South Essex is firing, when it shows the French getting shot, sometimes they're the Old Guard and sometimes they're just random French (parts from Talavera in Eagle)?
@VivaLaRaza2006 VIVE LE SHARPE L'EMPREUR EST UN GRANDE MERD PARDONE MOI JE EST ECOSE JE DETESTE L,ANGLAIS VIVE LA FRANCIAS I AM SORRY FOR ANY OFFENCE I WAS ONLY JOKING THIS WAS A GREAT SERIES OF PRORAMES I ENJOYED WATCHING BUT A SUPPORTER OF THE FRENCH ALWAYS GOD BLESS THE "AULD ALLIANCE"
@stormer55 Wellington in a report said that he was a bad general (why do you think they called him Silly Billy?) but only because he was inexperienced. He only said that because he couldn't bad mouth the Prince of Orange
@LordWellington15 That's the style of the Baker rifle bayonet. You see them hanging on the 95th soldiers kit in other shots. They're actually shaped more like small straight cutlass. Google Baker Rifle bayonet. You'll see what I mean. Well spotted though, it does look very similar.
as if the british alone made the french guard retreat... lol... in reality it was prussian 50 000 men arrival on the flank and rear of napoleon army and guard who made them retreats... but great tv show... I love the riffle men...
@Rostokouban what the same as the americans think they won thier independance by themselves and slate the french LOL, or the fact they think they won ww2 by themselves lol, we all are the same ....
@nounever, this movie isn't reality, and the Dutch proved to be quite useful. In fact, it was the Dutch artillery that bombarded the Imperial Guard to devastation, and Dutch infantry used a bayonet charge that routed the flank of the French Middle Guard.
" now I hate the French and I am quarter French................fuck"
be proud of your roots. You remind me of Hitler who renounced his Austrian nationality. I'm part German, Danish, and 1/8 British and I love them all.
@expertstrategy Well I do not doubt the Dutch actions or deeds in anyway, I am very proud this made me temporarily angry, William was quite like this in real life however he was wounded at Waterloo, the semi fictional one in Sharpe is a bastard though.
@11esure. You talk about England being the greatest empire ever. Now let's go over a list of territories: the falkland islands, no wait! Argentina claims those sorry, and a bunch of tiny islands. All of that land And the British isles add up to about the size of Nevada. Talk about being so grate now
@PrinceOfNetherlands after the napoleonic wars the british empire expanded to a quater of the globe it was the biggest empire to ever exist it contained over a quarter of the worlds population
No, America made the most movies about it. There's actually a very large difference.
I am not doubting the major contribution it made, I'm simply knocking the inherent arrogance. Go back to sticking your thumbs up your fat arses and scoffing apple pie, and creating enemies where there are none.
Those that our saying it's unfair on this country and not fair on this country... Remember it's a fictional book for one and also it's SHARPE'S Waterloo. Not the Prussian or the Dutch Waterloo... Sharpe's. It shows his fictional story through Waterloo also if anyone has read the book Mr Cornwell writes all about the ficition he writes in this and why he did it. Also last of all... Leave WW2 out of it, I'm English and everyones contribution won the war, not one army or the other...
@11esure mexican-american war, spanish-american war, these are both wars won by the americans by them selves, and i wouldnt say korea was a disaster, we (un task force)did win
@SouthDownIPLO ENGLISH SCUM AND PROUD. You call us scum when you bomb pubs and other local places full of civilians, full of children, who is the real scum? Im 1/4 Irish, and due to bastards like you, im ashamed of it.
Got to laugh at this thread, some of you take things faaar too serious, its a piece of entertainment for gods sake, anyone with an interest in the napoleonic wars knows what really happened, this is SHARPES waterloo! and why do i get the feeling i could watch a video about absolutely anything on here, and loads of americans will be banging on about WW2 and how they won it? bemusing..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@bongeordie We did win it. England and France got its ass whipped, and the only reason you're alive right now is because America sent unending supplies to England to hold out against German air raids. So don't act all high and mighty with your nose in the air, because 70 years ago your shit country was begging America to save them from Hitler.
@Yuilen If you actually look at WW2 then you'll realise that the Americans were very limited in their success. To take D-Day as an example: First most of the US Paratroops were dropped in the wrong place whilst the British, French and Canadians dropped where they were meant to, then in the beach landings the US contributed less troops and only one of their landings was a real sucess - Utah. Omaha took 3 days to achieve it's original objectives, the other forces all succeeded on the first day.
@Yuilen If anyone really won the war it was the Russians. But of course America can't admit that. Russia contributed more men and resources and were the ones who reached Berlin and ultimately forced Germany to surrender even though, out of pride more than anything else, Germany surrendered on the Western Front first.
@Yuilen AHAHAH USA won the war? If it was not for the allies and the USSR you would'nt of stood a chance, Germany and Japan would of destroyed youre navy, and eventually would of destroyed your economy. And shit country? You forget that you come from these isles, boy.
After Stalingrad, Germany stood no chance, and the battle of Britain was over, in the end of the day, you may of shortened the war, but you did not win it on your own. Even though im a Brit and proud, it was the Russians who won
@Yuilen LOL been watching Hollywood movies as a source for American WW2 history I see....
England, in the first 2-3 years successfully defended ITS OWN SHORES against the Germans & allies. Until 1942 you sat on your fat arses and just sold us materials. On D-Day you provided less than 20% of the invading force, CANADA turned up with more troops that you did, and in the hedges of Normandy your kill/death ratios were 25:1 against the German soldiers.
I don't know to whom or what you were replying, but I'll ask forgiveness if it was a stupid American. Still (speaking as an American and a teacher of history), we shouldn't be arguing over who contributed how much. Both sides spilled a lot of their blood. The British held their shore, but they were also driven from Dunkirk back to Britain. And yes, the Americans waited far too long to get involved; but the tide didn't turn until the Americans drove the Germans (Africa / Italy).
@hoosierteacher We were driven back by sheer force of numbers, but as said, we defended our own shores from the South and East for the first 2 or 3 years. I agree that no one should argue who contributed how much, but when some of your ignorant countrymen spout their ill informed Hollywood fed "facts" all over Youtube it needs addressing
America came in at the end and lost far more soldiers than they should have done, mainly due to Eisenhower/Patton just blindly throwing troops at conflicts
@hoosierteacher: Credit where it's properly due, fella. The British 8th Army won the African campaign in the western desert, and chased the Afrika Korps all the way to Tunisia. And then *all* of the western allied powers (incl. British Commonwealth forces) drove the Germans out of Algeria/Tunisia and Italy. Emphatically not just the Americans as you claim, especially considering their poor performance at Sidi Bou Zid and Kasserine Pass.
@bnipmnaa Not exactly. The "poor performance" - the US II Corps was under the British 1st Army. Patton arrived, put MG Fredendall in charge, and the allies advanced. I'm not saying the US was the sole reason for the defeat of the Axis. The British have valid claims that the US was late to arrive. But the British and Americans fought together to achieve a joint victory. Those who overstate American or British glory forget that is was a partnership that won the day. We won as allies.
@hoosierteacher: Yes exactly. Fredenhall presided over US defeats at both Sidi Bou Zid and Kasserine Pass. The US forces were over-confident in North Africa, but tbf they learnt from their initial mistakes – although one might argue that their commanders (especially Patton) valued their own personal prestige more than the lives of their men.
My comment was mainly aimed at addressing your claim that the *Americans* drove the Germans out of Africa/Italy. Untrue.
just want to add, if we had not had world war 1, the circumstances of world war 2 would not have arouse
i think the Americans did a good job in what they did do even before joining the war, if they had not helped the Germans before 1929 then the germans would have gone to war alot earlier
@bookloverholic the germans would not of gone to war prior to 1929...... 1933 is when the nazi's took power and it took them 6 years of preparing to be ready for war! can everyone please read this.... DO NOT DEBATE HISTORY UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT. I always see totally incorrect arguements on history instead of pretending you know or just making stuff up just pick up a book and read it.
@Yuilen: don't be silly. You sold material to the allies on credit for a few years (whilst simultaneously trading with the German Reichsbank via intermediaries in Switzerland, ffs!), then joined the war only after Hitler declared war on you. Not that you'd know that, if you rely on Hollywood for your information.
@OfficialFearClan, this was the imperial guard. They prefer to fight with their bayonets than shoot their muskets. You've got to have a lot of balls to march into a volley of flying lead.
The Prince of Orange was a dangerous idiot responsible for the deaths of many men through his tactical ineptitude. I know you Dutch need some hero for your miniscule little nation, but hey, it's fun to see your tears.

Well spotted though, it does look very similar.

nounever 11 months ago
@nounever, this movie isn't reality, and the Dutch proved to be quite useful. In fact, it was the Dutch artillery that bombarded the Imperial Guard to devastation, and Dutch infantry used a bayonet charge that routed the flank of the French Middle Guard.
" now I hate the French and I am quarter French................fuck"
be proud of your roots. You remind me of Hitler who renounced his Austrian nationality. I'm part German, Danish, and 1/8 British and I love them all.

America won WW2 single handed?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
@bongeordie We did win it. England and France got its ass whipped, and the only reason you're alive right now is because America sent unending supplies to England to hold out against German air raids. So don't act all high and mighty with your nose in the air, because 70 years ago your shit country was begging America to save them from Hitler.
Americans won the war. Enough said.
Yuilen 1 year ago
@Yuilen If you actually look at WW2 then you'll realise that the Americans were very limited in their success. To take D-Day as an example: First most of the US Paratroops were dropped in the wrong place whilst the British, French and Canadians dropped where they were meant to, then in the beach landings the US contributed less troops and only one of their landings was a real sucess - Utah. Omaha took 3 days to achieve it's original objectives, the other forces all succeeded on the first day.
JoeMorbi001 1 year ago
@Yuilen If anyone really won the war it was the Russians. But of course America can't admit that. Russia contributed more men and resources and were the ones who reached Berlin and ultimately forced Germany to surrender even though, out of pride more than anything else, Germany surrendered on the Western Front first.
JoeMorbi001 1 year ago
@Yuilen AHAHAH USA won the war? If it was not for the allies and the USSR you would'nt of stood a chance, Germany and Japan would of destroyed youre navy, and eventually would of destroyed your economy. And shit country? You forget that you come from these isles, boy.
After Stalingrad, Germany stood no chance, and the battle of Britain was over, in the end of the day, you may of shortened the war, but you did not win it on your own. Even though im a Brit and proud, it was the Russians who won
MrGezamo 1 year ago
@Yuilen LOL been watching Hollywood movies as a source for American WW2 history I see....
England, in the first 2-3 years successfully defended ITS OWN SHORES against the Germans & allies. Until 1942 you sat on your fat arses and just sold us materials. On D-Day you provided less than 20% of the invading force, CANADA turned up with more troops that you did, and in the hedges of Normandy your kill/death ratios were 25:1 against the German soldiers.
Why? because they were better than you....
chapmasi 1 year ago
@chapmasi
And yes, the Americans waited far too long to get involved; but the tide didn't turn until the Americans drove the Germans (Africa / Italy).
hoosierteacher 1 year ago
@hoosierteacher We were driven back by sheer force of numbers, but as said, we defended our own shores from the South and East for the first 2 or 3 years. I agree that no one should argue who contributed how much, but when some of your ignorant countrymen spout their ill informed Hollywood fed "facts" all over Youtube it needs addressing
America came in at the end and lost far more soldiers than they should have done, mainly due to Eisenhower/Patton just blindly throwing troops at conflicts
chapmasi 1 year ago
@hoosierteacher: Credit where it's properly due, fella. The British 8th Army won the African campaign in the western desert, and chased the Afrika Korps all the way to Tunisia. And then *all* of the western allied powers (incl. British Commonwealth forces) drove the Germans out of Algeria/Tunisia and Italy. Emphatically not just the Americans as you claim, especially considering their poor performance at Sidi Bou Zid and Kasserine Pass.
bnipmnaa 1 year ago
@bnipmnaa Not exactly. The "poor performance" - the US II Corps was under the British 1st Army. Patton arrived, put MG Fredendall in charge, and the allies advanced. I'm not saying the US was the sole reason for the defeat of the Axis. The British have valid claims that the US was late to arrive. But the British and Americans fought together to achieve a joint victory. Those who overstate American or British glory forget that is was a partnership that won the day. We won as allies.
hoosierteacher 1 year ago

bnipmnaa 1 year ago
@hoosierteacher: Yes exactly. Fredenhall presided over US defeats at both Sidi Bou Zid and Kasserine Pass. The US forces were over-confident in North Africa, but tbf they learnt from their initial mistakes – although one might argue that their commanders (especially Patton) valued their own personal prestige more than the lives of their men.
My comment was mainly aimed at addressing your claim that the *Americans* drove the Germans out of Africa/Italy. Untrue.
bnipmnaa 1 year ago
@hoosierteacher
just want to add, if we had not had world war 1, the circumstances of world war 2 would not have arouse
i think the Americans did a good job in what they did do even before joining the war, if they had not helped the Germans before 1929 then the germans would have gone to war alot earlier
bookloverholic 1 year ago
@bookloverholic the germans would not of gone to war prior to 1929...... 1933 is when the nazi's took power and it took them 6 years of preparing to be ready for war! can everyone please read this.... DO NOT DEBATE HISTORY UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT. I always see totally incorrect arguements on history instead of pretending you know or just making stuff up just pick up a book and read it.
TheNikzaw 11 months ago
@Yuilen: don't be silly. You sold material to the allies on credit for a few years (whilst simultaneously trading with the German Reichsbank via intermediaries in Switzerland, ffs!), then joined the war only after Hitler declared war on you. Not that you'd know that, if you rely on Hollywood for your information.
