  • Wow amazing seeing that!

  • Wow it was quite a surge.

  • Was this a tsunami wave? It seemed to be moving slowly but with alot of water following it?

  • hmm quite amazing considering it traveled the pacific lol

  • LMFAO! thats it?? hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • what?? thats it? LMFAO!

  • WOW, i from chile, and i have been there, OMG

  • That happened ever so slightly in New Plymouth.. the tide was 2m higher at low tide..

I actually thought it would of been bigger but this is still... scary

It wouldnt affect New Plymouth since most of the people live up the highland areas... though only the fore shore would be destroyed and about... 1/60th of the city?? which is the shopping mall..

  • Small but I bet anyone would run from it!

  • a very cool video... love the small and yet strong current of the waves....

  • Jesus, it almost bloody killed...that seagull... that wave must have been at least 30 centimetres high. thank God you're ok. amazing footage.

  • @Ashvegian Ahaha.. i was gonna say the same thing :'3

  • no wonder people think tsunami surges are harmless! it looked small but it completely covered the pier!

  • pity it was not 1,000 foot high lol

  • just think to know what it wud be like with the boxing day one in tailand!! Yeh u cuda went to the beach in australia we hardly got anything, but if it was an actual huge wave, those stupid dickheads wudve been swept under and drowned by the force of it!! Maybe one day they will be where a real big wave will hit, maybe that will be their karma!!

  • are you ok cause that must of been scary

  • Very good video. People need to remember that this tsunami had travelled around 11,000km by the time it hit New Zealand. When the earthquake that triggered it occurred, thousands of square kilometres of seafloor was displaced vertically, along with all of the water above it. That water had to go somewhere. Some of it started slamming into the Chilean coastline minutes later, but a good whack of it took off across the Pacific to NZ, to Hawaii, to the Pacific Islands and even Japan.

  • Here in England it was massive.

  • 65seaweed. That is out the back of my grandad's house in Rocking horse road.

  • I think its awesome and all you guys on here saying its pathetic are the same kind of dikheads that would drive down the beach to watch it coming!!! Its amazing how many dumb people there are in this world....

  • its an estuary....where the salt water meets the river water... it does that

  • Even though it appears small, you can see how much power is behind it!

Thanks for posting this, we headed up hills very early in the morning!!

  • something not mentioned is the tide was out when the wave got here, and the sea level only raised up 2.2m in lyttleton, if the tide had been in (and its max high/low tides atm) all you guys in New Brighton would've gotten wet.

  • lol well Chch pwnd tidal wave haha

  • cool footage

  • rip all the people who died in the chch tsunami

  • no one died you knob

  • yeah thats the joke because the wave was so pathetic when it got here

  • ahh well ur sarcasm isnt exactly obvious here

  • randomgurl123... was ur comment aimed at me ? if so it makes no sense...

  • hjcole, pathetic you say.... have you watched the footage?.... I think it's quite impressive for a Wave that's traveled the entire width of the Pacific Ocean.....

  • Yeah my comment was about the state of the wave once it got here and how it was pretty pathetic in terms of size but yeah as you said that does tend to happen when a wave travels across a large body of water such at the Pacific Ocean ^^

  • @19bisho pathetic? yeah that guy is tripping. Even at 12 inches high you can see how much power that wave still has and how much water was behind it.

  • Hey Super Fuzz.....Tsunami are never big waves?????

  • that water looks goooooooooood

  • did anyone die :s that look pretty serious

  • May look like a small wave, but it's actual a tidal swell, it doesn't have a back on it like a wave would. It's like the tide coming in, but instead of taking 6 hours, it takes 60 seconds.

If the tsunami events had coincided with the already high tides, the impact would have been a lot more significant.

  • Gr8 Video

But pls pls next time when theres a tsunami warning, STAY OFF BEACH!

I am so happy that tsunami didn't hit NZ hard.

  • wow imagine that a hundred times bigger

  • @ninipoos1 u dick. tsunami are never big waves, and nobody needs to die. he was just documenting the event. in this case it wasn't a big deal

  • Superfuzz..... I don't think the 200,000 people who died around the Indian Ocean a few years ago would have agreed that Tusnami are never big waves.. as you believe.. Tusnami is the Japanese word for Tidal wave, The meaning of Tidal wave in the Heinemann NZ Dictionary is; a large destructive Wave produced by an Earthquake at sea

  • Your a moron ninipoos1, don't even know where to stay with your stupid comment

  • "where to say" dont you mean what to say, think your a little slow as well

  • it was a tsunami you retard and what do you mean more important places..

  • fucka

  • thank you for demonstrating that a tsunami does not have to a massive destructive force. but is just the shifting of water from one area of the ocean to another due to seismic activity (ie, earthquakes) and that the further the distance the wave travels the more Force or energy it dispels before reaching another landmass, and therefore can be small. But non-the-less still really cool.

  • It looks small but that's still a LOT of water, and water has what? 180 pounds per square inch? So yea..

  • EPIC TSUNAMI!

  • kewl vid. Looked so small and weak haha.

  • Small and weak...? That wave travelled 4800 miles.

  • Ohh was that the tsunami i thought

    It was a small wave

  • Where was the tsunami? Oh right. =P

  • i was disappointd with this so called tsunami, it was a great day for the beach at brighton and not a sign of a tsunami in sight.

  • It was still really powerfull even though it was little! :O

I kept away from the beach that day haha :)

  • dick

  • looked like a 'oh shit' moment at the end there

  • haha i was thinking "shit cameraman you better start running" when the wave wouldnt stop coming closer

  • shyt thats awesome but anyway how can you video that with out getting hurt

  • @TheKcookie ha, um when you're in the water the waves just energy so the shock goes right through you. (when you go underneath i mean)

  • great video, thanks for sharing it

  • those people living there will be crapping their pants from now on...

  • Small surge but in the context of where it came from, very powerful footage as posted earlier! Makes you realise how devastating a tsunami is. 1 metre higher and the people standing on the banks would have been in serious trouble.

  • Shit !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take Cover.

  • i wish i was here that time...really want to see how does the impact of earthquake in Chilie effected NZ coastal area...

  • Terrifying !

  • Powerful footage.

  • I wish we had got something like that in Auckland. It would have knocked all those idiots who where on the beach with their children on their arses and given them a bit of a fright. May then they'd listen to the warnings!!!

  • Yes they were standing near the edge but also standing in the gardens of their houses. A cross between curiosity and protecting their interests I guess.

  • Hi. Would you tell me where the footage was taken from (location) please? Is that the Redcliffs foreshore shown briefly at the end after the camera shake stops?

    Thanks Eric.

  • was someone in the sailboat?

  • Yes but he was able to scramble ashore dragging the boat after him- it was a bit further away than it looked.

  • in nova scotia, we call that the tide,

our tide is like 30 feet in some places!

  • Yes but it wasn't the tide or a wave, it was a surge of water in the normally placid waters of a wide, flat estuary. I know about big tides, I normally live on the Bristol Channel in Wales where the tides are up to 44 feet, second only in the world to Fundy Bay in Canada.

  • haha, ya... good-old bay a fundy

    anyways i was just commenting.

    nice vid!

  • @vivhead1 I live their too. In Barry. Massive tides :)

  • @whitewings1933

I appreciate the fact that your comment has been removed. Trust me, I am sympathetic to the disaster that has recently occurred in New Zealand, and hope all of them the best of luck in coping with the terrible event; however, that has nothing to do with my opinion of this video over 10 months ago. No hard feelings whatever the case,

    ~IMS

  • @InfiniteMomentStudio - Thanks, I had my links mixed up and nearly made a complete arse out of myself LOL - again no hard feelings VRY SRY :) I deleted it when I realized I had the wrong clip XD

  • @whitewings1933

aha, its totally OK. I figured that was the case.

    thanks

  • Do you have footage of Tsunami hitting sailboat too? Bit more power than an ordinary wave.

  • Yes but he was able to scramble ashore dragging the boat after him- it was a bit further away than it looked and not very dramatic

  • 5 stars. Thanks for uploading that.

  • wooo!

  • Wow i didnt notice the Tsunami since im inland and was crazy busy. Thanks so much 4 the vid1
