I was so sad to hear Tony Campolo say, "I'm not in a position to say what kind of person is going to hell and what kind of person is going to hell...none of us are. I'm not in a position to say what religious path is the only way to heaven." With a few more words, he clearly stated that he did not believe Christianity was the only way to heaven. He sure has changed. Funny how "socialogist" and "socialist" seem to sound very similar.
Tony's saying that he can't say WHO can become a Christian.. he's not saying that Christ is not the only way.. he's saying that Christ can get ANYBODY into heaven irrespective of what WE think. The Bible says 'Judge and ye shall be judged' and the new testament is all about encouraging people and building them up not about saying they have no hope :) (which, from my point of view, is definately a good thing coz id hav no hope otherwise!)
I love how people love to re-phrase what politicians and liberal Christians say. "No, no, no, THIS is what he/she's REALLY trying to say." When I was in high school my denomination had him as a speaker for their international youth convention. They regretted it for some of the things he said. Now that I look back, I regret it too. I enjoyed his anecdotes etc then...when my mind was full of mush. Now I know he's a typical liberal college professor. It's very disappointing.
In his interview with Charlie Rose, he describes a Buddhist monk who and felt the presence of Jesus, but didn't know His name. What he says there is that Jesus is the only way, but Christianity doesn't have a monopoly on Jesus.
Think about what you are saying. Christianity: the followers of Jesus, don't have a monopoly on Jesus. No Christian would say that he/she had a "monopoly" on Jesus. Jesus alone has a monopoly on Jesus. Jesus said, "I am God" He also said, "NO ONE can get to the Father but by ME. Following what HE did, NOT what some monk or what some budah did will get you to heaven. Those who follow after other Gods will burn in hell. I'm just quoting Jesus. Sorry to disappoint you and Tony.
He's made MANY statements implying such things...also statements supporting the idea that our government should be those who care for the widows and orphans. A very BIG supporter of larger, more intrusive government.
The idea that a monk "felt" Jesus but this Jesus did not compel him to repent of his sin or his following of another god (VERY little "g") to follow the one true God is weak. Let's face it. Tony preaches a very very liberal doctrine hard to find in the Bible except thru marginalizing the true Gospel & who Jesus is: the God-man. So, yeah, satanist somewhere said he felt Jesus onetime. Did he repent and follow Jesus? HE is the only Way. It has nothing to do with Christianity, ALL to do w/Jesus
Tiny Crack, what are you going to do today for Jesus? I am really curious, maybe great things! But what I notice from people that say things like you it is a whole lot of nothing. I hope you do big things for the lord today!
Very weak. What I find about people who cannot defend a weak doctrinal view is attempts to change the subject, asking people to tell them what they are going to do for Jesus. So if I take my wife and daughter to the zoo today instead of open air preaching or serving in a soup kitchen, then my opinion that the Gospel should not be watered down by wealthy liberal preachers is negated. Riiiiight. Very very weak. For your knowlege, I serve the Lord in a number of different ways.
I will not slip into your trap and trumpet my good deeds. Nor will I expect the government to do the church's job as Mr Campollo does. It is MY job as a Christian, which I work feverishly to fulfill nearly every day. NOW, YOU TELL ME what you do for Jesus. What I notice from people that say things like YOU is the inability to re-type user names as they are. Tiny Crack is NOT my user name. When you have a stronger defense than changing the subject, reply. otherwise, don't post any more.
The Bible mentions several times that government should look after its poor. Also, government is a way to help the poor efficiently and remove sinful excessive unfair wealth.
@trademestuff 1. How much wealth is too much? Who decides? You? Me? A wealthy congressman (you know how much they make?) You are making it very very apparent that you know nothing about how inefficient government is in EVERYTHING it does. Only a communist or socialist would trust the government with charitable causes. I'm still waiting for your proof texts from the Bible. Allegories and stories are not acceptable.
Psalm 72:4"He will defend the afflicted among the people
and save the children of the needy;
he will crush the oppressor"(about King Solomon) I'm an economist don't patronize me and tell me I know nothing about government,I'm sure you'd agree the bible is pretty clear about being condescending. In my view any extra wealth on top of basic needs is excessive when God's people are starving, thirsty or homeless."communist or socialist" I'm neither,I'm a social democrat learn the difference
@kiwi4lyf2007 Ohhhh! Yes! When your argument is weak, you pull the college card out. That's supposed to shut everyone up and make them agree with you! "Well he must be right! HE'S GOT A DEGREE!" If that verse is the best you can come up with, (a verse hotly argued whether it refers to Jesus or Solomon) your argument is very very weak. Your college stay didn't teach you much about how to write. You still didn't answer my questions.
@kiwi4lyf2007 You have trouble reading, don't you? I didn't mention Democrats or Republicans. Name a government program that is efficient. I beg of you. The Robin Hood concept is unbiblical A person can see that in the OT instructions on how to take care of the poor. You still didn't answer my question. How much is too much wealth? What's "basic?" Who decides? Want to live in a country that's run that way? Move to one. I prefer a free one. You still haven't answered about Jesus' quotes.
As I said anyone has excessive wealth on top of their basic needs when God's people suffer and starve, many government programs are efficient research the French or British health system or the best example kiwibank in NZ.I didn't say my degree justified my points it's just that being an educated person means you are not totally ignorant of how the government works and points to flaws in your personal attacks. I will pray for you my friend, as I see this is
@kiwi4lyf2007 AAaaaah! Someone who KNOWS (as you say you do) government , yet still says it is efficient and that it should take more of our money has some serious problems.
not getting anywhere I will pray for you my friend that the Lord can open both our hearts and minds. If you want a rational discussion please keep to the facts rather then irrational personal attacks you seem to have a good knowledge of some of this stuff (although I clearly disagree) and it degrades your arguments. As for the Dem/Rep issue I don't know where on earth you got that from but I suggest you google Social Democrat and Tommy Douglas, a Christian left hero.
@trademestuff Typical of most of the left. You don't answer any of the questions, but continue to argue your point. I'm not surprised about the "social" part of this Tommy Douglas. Most strong Dem's are quite "social..." SOCIALIST. The conversation is done because you can't name a government program that is efficient.
Lol I named four look at government healthcare in Western Europe. You still clearly don't know the meaning of social democrat and seem to have no interest in opening your mind to the views of others... and it is typical of the right, name calling and absence of facts and this strange obsession of repeating words over and over again somehow makes your point more valid. Using the word socialist like the boogie man is quite frankly ridiculous(I'm not a socialist for the record btw).
Oh and as for the 'move to one' comment I have it's called New ZEaland where we don't let people go bankrupt for healthcare costs, last time I checked I don't think Jesus would like that idea much.
@kiwi4lyf2007 If you want to show me where your store is, I will certainly patronize your store. Don't wave your silly degree in my face and claim that, because you were able to organize your time and your life at one point in time and you were able to give correct, impressive answers to some professor......that YOU are so much more informed and intelligent than I am. You can't shut me up by saying "I have a degree." I know a number of people who are morons who have degrees....cont....
@kiwi4lyf2007 These morons start waving their degree around when it becomes obvious their arguments are becoming weak. No one has been condescending.....except to bring up some stupid piece of paper someone was foolish enough to believe made them wiser. Your Biblical reference is very very weak. Socialism fails. History proves it. I'm so sad I ever paid attention to Tony Campollo.
You seem very over-sensitive to my comments and insinuating that I am a moron or a socialist every time I use the word social is quite frankly ridiculous. Please brother, I never claimed I am more intelligent then you or that I have all the answers just that my interpretation of the bible is different to yours and you still have not come up with an answer to Psalm 72:4, Matthew 6:19-21), 1 John 3:17 and Leviticus 19:13. As for your comments about Dr. Campolo, I think we should never
stop listening to people just because we disagree with them. After all Jesus said, Romans 12:14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another.
"I agree that with a lot of what the government does and they have great programmes but the best come from the church"- Perhaps you should listen over the clip again.
We each have our own lines we are willing to cross and not to cross. If we all had the same standards of holiness or morality, it'd be a boring life. :)
That was freaking awesome! The story of Agnus is exactly what we need. Building up inner cities, is exactly what we need. Loving people enough to go in the trenches with them, exactly what we need! Christ did it! Shouldn't we???
"I have three things I'd like to say today. First, while you were sleeping last night, 30,000 kids died of starvation or diseases related to malnutrition. Second, most of you don't give a shit. What's worse is that you're more upset with the fact that I said shit than the fact that 30,000 kids died last night."
I agree with you 100%! The things you have mentioned here are exactly those things Christ cared most about. He helped those whom the Pharisees ignored and thought "they have unclean hands, they don't matter". IF we are to truly follow the example of Christ, we'll get more involved in helping the suffering people of this world. If we truly want people to follow Christ, we'll show them the true Christ they should be following.
I've long thought that (my fellow) Christians who get "wrapped around the axle" over 'naughty words' had appallingly screwed up priorities; Tony's speech just plain hammered it home in a way I hadn't even considered, far deeper than I'd ever considered.

The point of the Buddhist monk story was that the monk already had Jesus in his life and knew him, he just wasn't aware of the name of the presence.
