And--God I love these two guys! And I love this song. There's also a fabulous union song I heard a long time ago called Bread & Roses, though I have no idea who wrote it. I think its about a strike at a textile mill in Worcester in the mid-19th century. Great songs. People need to sing together again. Nobody does that any more. I think thousands of workers singing this, or Joe Hill or Bread & Roses--would still scare a right wing politician good. Us working people--WE CAN beat the neo-cons.
We need a WORLD WIDE union movement now. We also need to over turn all so called "free trade" agreements like NAFTA now. These trade agreements gave corporations godlike powers. With those powers, corporations outsourced their manufacturing bases to countries where workers are virtually slaves. Our workers cannot compete against slaves. While the neo-cons & their corporate masters amass wealth, workers backs are shoved against the wall. We must challenge the "free trade" myth. Union, world wide.
Before "Pretty Red Wing," it was Robert A. Schumann, Opus 68, No. 10 (1848). It's also a Dutch Sinterklaas song as "Hij komt, hij komt, de lieve gode Sint."
The Pulaski High school band did not play this song at the Rose Bowl Parade. They played THE MOON SHINES BRIGHT ON PRETTY RED WING, a bluegrass song about an INDIAN maid written in 1907 by Kelly Mills and Thurland Chattaway thats available here on YouTube.. Guthrie plagiarized the tune and lyrics for his song.
Just a thought - if all the unions in this country went on strike until the jobs came back from china, mexico, etc. (especially the garbage workers in july) would it be effective? would the jobs come back?
Big corporations love to break strikes by hiring scabs to bomb and pillage and then get the press to publish a story that it was union workers who did the damage. Think twice before you blame the unions. Also read the biography of Clarence Darrow. He did lots more legal work for labor unions than he ever did at the "Monkey Trial".
Big corporations have had tax breaks for years and excessive tax breaks since George Bush in 2001, for over 10 years. If giving breaks to the rich creates jobs, then where are these jobs? Remove all tax breaks for the rich. Tax the shit out of them and reward them a little for each job that they create or bring back from outsourcing! That's the side that I'm on. Unions forever! Yes, all human organizations have flaws. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater!

@volantlegend Oh, and safety standards, and the minimum wage, and limits on work hours, and overtime pay, and mandatory sick leave, and maternity leave, and child labor regulations, and all the other things the unions fought and died for on the picket lines.
The banks caused this chaos and we the tax payer has to suffer the consequences, brings back memories of the world banks holding the purse strings after the first world war, where so many millions suffered at their mercy, thank goodness the human spirit fought back and through their fight the National Health Service was born from the cradle to the grave a decent health care and social system for all.
This song must once again be the anthem of all people of conscience, not only in Wisconsin and Ohio, but anywhere hard-working people are fighting for their share of the wealth they've created.
Organize!

I knew this song before I'd ever heard "Redwing." I alway thought that "Redwing" was to the tune of "Union Maid" instead of the other way around.

My favorite song by Pete. Also my beloved Philadelphia Union's anthem! Cheers and up the Union AND the union! :)
