This is the first movie I ever attended. My mother took me to the Post Theater in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1939 to see it. As the years go by I have learned to love it more and more.
This movie was magnificent in all respects. Just imagine-Robert Donat in '39 was facing the stiffest competition ever for the Best Actor Oscar, including Clark Gable for "Gone With the Wind" and WON IT. And by no accident either. The film was tender, compelling and something to see over and over again.
What an idyllic time the Victorian period was, compared to what has transpired since. It is a shame that Europe had to commit suicide through the First World War.
i heard this song in the last ever episode of Due South and came searching for it... seems like you're a fan of due south yourself! that last episode had me in tears, especially when this song played.
@ahenmaxtae Yes, you are absolutely right, I am a fan of Due South and like yourself, I loved this song when I first heard it in the last ever episode of Due South. I have 2 Due South CD'S and this beautiful song is on one of them.
i recently bought a vinyl record from an antique store in australia , just three dollars . it was a collection of poem narrated by robert donet., with big picture of him on the cover which i intend to frame and hang on wall. he had such a beautiful speaking voice and was a brilliant actor. i also love ronald colman.
@DanHappy2 I totally agree that Robert Donat had a extraordinary beautiful voice and you are so fortunate to have him reciting poetry I am envious of you, wish I had that collection
Thank for your kind comments. Goodbye Mr Chips with Robert Donat and Greer Garson and Random Harvest with Ronald Colman and Greer Garson will always be two of my favourite films. They just don't seem to make these films anymore which is a shame.
Yes redhotmountie, his Chipping is the best one of all. No remake comes close. I only wish I could have seen him on stage, since theater was his favorite medium. But since he only performed in the UK, this american, would never have been able to see him since he was taken from us much too soon.
I totally agree a superb actor and no else could play Mr Chipping as he did, he made that role his own, although there has been many remakes of this film there will only be one Mr Chipping and one Goodbye Mr Chips worth remembering.
Nicely done redhotmountie ! A great movie and I am taken by the beauty of the music you chose. A good presentation. Robert Donat was a North Star actor. He was just PERFECT. Greer Garson always impressed me as a true lady. She was above the rest. Her poise and posture simply stated " CLASS."
Thank you for your very kind comments. Greer Garson is one my all time favourite actresses. As you quite rightly stated she was simply "CLASS". Random Harvest is another of my all time favourite films, just simply "MAGIC"
A curse on those who caused this Wonderful film's removal from Uchoob, I had such a nice night watching it, for goodness sake it's so old, newspapers have given the DVD of it away free!
What about the lovely Greer Garson with Ronald Colman in "Random Harvest" ? Another magical love story. Wish someone would post clips of that on here-if they have I haven't found them yet.
I have already made a 'Random Harvest' video, please watch it and let me know what u think of it. It is one of my all time favourite films, also unsurpassable.
This film never fails to move me to tears, it ends, and I feel manipulated like a puppet, but what a wonderful feeling it is! Mr. Robert Donat is superb in the role and with Ms. Garson makes this film an experience to come back to, over and over again!
greer garson was one of the beautiful talented actresses EVER legand and mr donat way deserved the oscar for the film! (some people thought that clark cable should have won for gone with the wind)(i DONT)LOL beautifully made, and the film itself is sooooooooo sad lovely!
I totally agree the film is simply unsurpassable. Another of my favourite Greer Garson films is Random Harvest with the dashing Ronald Colman also unsurpassable, sadly they don't seem to make these type of charming films anymore.Thank u Kindly
no they dont! because they have soooo many bad movies with people who cant act when greer and betty davis were acting they had to fight for roles! now its bad and bad! and good films people dont really want to see! its sad!
I didn't know Mr Donat died so young, only 53, very sad, but what a fantastic actor he was, and of course the beautiful Greer Garson, a truly lovely film, thank you for posting this!
Thank u kindly,Although there has been many remakes since this film was made but none i think have truly captured the beauty and charm of the Robert Donat/Greer Garson film
Thanks a lot Redhotmountie. This is a great movie for all of us to remember. For sure Greer Garson and Robert Donat left us with an experience that will stay with us forever.

Two wonderful actors who both acted with that equally wonderful actress Greer Garson. Sadly, the likes of which we will probably never see again.

A great movie showing how British schools should be, but are not, thanks to "modern ideas" and political correctness.
Today, MR Chips would be in court for "child abuse" !!!
