Yes-don't breed or buy while shelter pets die-and let's not forget dogs are a HUGE time and financial committment for 18 plus years. Don't get a dog unless you're ready for that. I don't know many unemployed people that need to take on another financial responsibility... but i do love Ben and appreciate his love for dogs.
Great video Ben! I have always liked Ben, but never knew that he was a fellow canine lover. All of our dogs have been rescued, either by us or adopted. We have fostered many dogs over a span of 9 years. Yes Ben! You are correct. Get a dog is the recipe for true love!
In 40 yrs. we've adopted an Irish Setter ("Brandy") from a divorced friend;taken in a stray ("Chief") til he lept the fence 1 last time, never returned. Took in a German Shep pup &lost him to distemper. Fostered a snoring, protective fem. St. Bernard. Adopted male Golden found in ad("Bear").Took in "Missy" Black Lab mix)then rescued "Ginger"Sr. Golden 2004-11/13 was our goodbye--there's still a gaping wound in our hearts. Find your 'forever friend' thru rescues & shelters. They'll love you 4ever.
I adore my dog who is my best friend, constant and loyal companion. Nobody else may be there but I know I can count on a giant smile and a happy face when I walk in the door
Amen, as a English Springer Spaniel Rescue America volunteer I can only tell everybody to please visit the shelters and adopt a dog!!!!!! In these uncertain times the shelters are full of wonderful adoptable animals who have been found as strays or given up for all kinds of reasons, many because homes and jobs have been lost. Please do your part and go to your shelter today!!!!!
Get a dog! And consider one in a shelter who will love you unconditionally. One of mine (Sammi) came from the shelter and the other (Smoke) was lost during a fire.
Ben Stein, you are so right. Just like you, I had a mini weiner too. I didn't like to admit it and it was embarassing on dates, but after getting a big rescued Chocolate Lab I didn't seem to care much about my problem. She looks at me kinda funny when I get out of the shower. I think she is just hungry. She loves to go on drives but just cant figure out the goddam shifter and never stops at red lights. Thank God she doesn't text. She eats like a grunting pig. Can you recommend any table manners?
How very true!! Rescue a dog (or even a cat) today!! Our local animal control euthanises a minimum 10 animals daily because of overpopulation!! They really dont need much. Just love, a good home, and a good meal! They will love you no matter what!!!
Cmetropole is so right. There are plenty of pedigrees as well as mixes in the pounds right now so go get one and save a life if you can promise to care for that animal for the rest of its life. You will be rewarded a million fold!
We share the same sense of humor, political views, Phi Beta Kappa keys, and now I find out we share Weimaraners. This is way too good. I would not have the patience to deal with my patients if not for the total release of being with my dogs. This YouTube was forwarded by our beloved Weimaraner breeder but we know from experience that no dog is as grateful as a rescued dog. Either way, the dog forces you to live in the moment and helps to make the moment good.
Your words are words of truth, there is nothing like a dog, they love you unconditionally and that is very hard to get from humans. I don't think I could live without a dog. I have a white german shepherd and he helps me go through all of my trying time!
I would be dead already if not for my Dog Duke. He does for me what NO HUMAN can.
I would kill or die for my Dog. I prefer my Dog to other Humans because he does not Judge me. He knows the true me, he loves me, and he keeps me living in the present. My Dog is my Personal Trainer and Coach as well as my mood stabilizer and medical alert assistant...He is so many things I could never find a human willing or even able to do for me.
Ben Stein for this story of support towards animals. Please everyone go to my channel here on YouTube by clicking on my name to see animals in shelters across America NOW that are all URGENT. What does that mean? For no reason other then being born and unwanted they are going to be put to sleep. Some with a needle straight in their heart and others by being gassed till the suffocate. Know the truth about shelters, HSUS and PETA.
Well said and to the point. You can't go wrong. It will ease your troubles, put a smile on your face and your life will improve. You will gain respectability, panache, character and "street cred" just cause you have a dog! Men will respect you and women will want you just cause you have a dog! Don't put it off til later, do it now and GET A DOG. You'll be glad you did.
Ben, you are so right. I am almost 60 and have had dogs since I was 10. Everytime I lose one to old age I am heartbroken, but I get a new dog and everything is ok again.
Finally Ben has something useful to tell us. This is very much unlike what he had to say about the market since October. He was completely wrong about that. He is completely right about dogs. Dogs are important. Of course we already knew that, but at least he's on the right track this time.
Yes. This is the first time since the Reagan administration that this jackass has made a positive contribution to society. Not that his speechwriting for Ronny was good for the country either.
Ben Stein, you are one of my heroes. Ever since your documentary "Expelled" I've realized you speak the truth no matter what and your "Get A Dog" is an ultimate truth.
Such a beautiful statement on the importance our pets are to us! I can't imagine living without my dog (and my cat who died in December at the age of nearly 19). Everything said in this piece is true; all they want is our love. I now volunteer at the Animal Shelter here in San Diego and see so many pets who want so much to go to their forever homes.
Psst. Cats are pretty frickin' awesome, too. They make great hot water bottles, don't hog the bed (too much), and don't care if your eyeliner's runny or you've gotten fat or you have a flat tire.
If only everyone understood fully what Ben knows. If you adopt a dog, it will be the best investment that you ever make. In a way, it will make you rich beyond measure.
Sorry, goofed and clicked thumbs down, meant to do thumbs up. I found my dogs abandoned in the woods, starving and sick. I REALLY did not want dogs, but could not walk away from them. One of the few moves in my life that I am positive was absolutely correct.
A DOG CAN save your sanity during these tough times... If you love your dog, you'll worry that you may not afford vet bills or a fancy collar. But it's so true, your dog loves you just being YOU, laughing, crying, worrying, feeling nothing at all... They are amazing animals! ANGELS ON EARTH watching over us, not the other way around... wonder why DOG ALSO SPELLS GOD? definately GOD SENT...
this is so true. i ll add that pets in general will get you thru... their need for your caretaking will make you get up in the morning. their happiness to see you come home from work. and someone to hold when you need to cry or hug. there's phases i wouldn't have made it thru without my dogs and cats.
Pound rescue is the most noble, we have always a handful of them....all shaded shapes and colors, no breed preferences, just have 4 legs and love us back and that they do
I hope alot of people take Ben Stein's advice. A dog will love you no matter what.
If you can't afford the expensive dog food, they can downgrade, they are not picky, they love you and stand by you. I am touched by Ben Stein. A shelter or rescue dog is the best choice,IMO> Thanks Ben
Ben Stein is not a Republican... he's an austrian (school of thought, not country) economist... who are die hard free market supporters... I would say more of an economic conservative. In anycase, he's right on the money about this! i have had 2 shelter dogs. and they CAN save you from depression! They are so cuddly and licky... and they love you no matter what!
@mikeyp1230 He's a very good man and I think Ben is not a crazy right winger like most of them are. Plus that game show he did on Comedy Central made me and my late grandmother laugh so hard. I'm also a dog lover like Mr. Stein.
No way I would have been able to make it through a recent breakup without my dog, she's incredible.
