THIS IS SUCH A BEAUTIFULLY SUNG SONG. MY MUM HAS SPOKEN IT FOR MANY YEARS AND HAS OFTEN WONDERED WHY NEIL NEVER SINGS IT ANYMORE. WE SEEN HIM PLAY IN DUBLIN'S AVIVA STADIUM ON 25TH JUNE AND HE WAS JUST SIMPLY FANTASTIC FOR A 70 YEAR OLD MAN HE IS A LEGEND AND A TRUE SHOWMAN. HE GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS WITH THE STUNNING SONGS HE PLAYED AND HOW HE SET OFF SOME LOCKED AWAY EMOTIONS FROM MY CHILDHOOD. I GREW UP LISTENING TO HIM EVERYDAY IT WAS A VERY SPECIAL TIME TO ACTUALLY SEE HIM PLAY LIVE. LEGEND!!

A hidden gem tucked away at the end of Stones, this poignant and beautiful song by the delightful Roger Miller and sung so sensitively by Neil. Beautiful orchestration. My late father was a big Neil fan and at nearly 50 it moves me to tears while remembering the "What is your fave Diamond song?" debates we used to have!
Two broken hearts lonely looking like houses Where nobody lives Two people each having so much pride inside Neither side forgives The angry words spoken in haste Such a waste of two lives Its my belief pride is the chief cause in the decline in the number of husbands and wives A woman and a man A man and a woman Some can and some cant and some cant
This, along with "Taproot Manuscript", is one of his best albums. But, don't forget, he's been a songwriter for many years - he wrote the best tune for Jay and the
Americans - "Sunday and Me". Don't forget all of his '60;s stuff..."Shiloh" etc. Whatcha gonna do next Mr. D?
i thought to myself I dont remember this one? then after 1 second it was in my head after about 35 yrs since last hearing it! and i know all the words . . . . beautiful, love listening to neil x
@KaiBailey Absolutely, and I do love Roger's version of his own song too,but Neil Diamond does do it justice, even more than both Reba McEntire and Brooks And Dunn did several years later.
I really like both but Tap is also very good. The music flows and true life. His voice is strong, one just doesn't get tired of listening to his old music, which is much better than his music of today.
Thanks for posting this. I have another version of this by the same artist but in a completely different key. This one is the one I remember as a kid - I was starting to wonder if I'd imagined it - must be 30 years since I last heard this.
Brooks and Dunn did a much better version.........

My favorite Neil song .. I remember hearing this as a little kid. My dad would listen this on vinyl while drinking a Coors and humming along.

Leave it to Neil Diamond to do the perfect version of this song:) Absolutely perfect.

Roger Miller was a pure genius. I love his version and Neil did it complete justice.

I'm not sure which of his albums was best -- Stones or Moods ??

No question 'Tap Root Manuscript'! ! !

I agree with Taproot Manuscript as his best album, but it's a tough call.
pie0my 2 years ago
In my humble opinion followed closely by the original Hot August Night!

@pie0my My vote is for Stones. But ya, it's close.

@MCRenNo1 Stones was great because of the homage he paid to his other fellow songwriters and even peers to an extent.
