@coyotesong wow, a pedaphile on the internet. Who would have guessed it? By the way the song is about a man in love with a married women not a damn teenager.
I was just 21 and working on the Gene McCarthy campaign in 1968. I fell for this 15 year old volunteer which i knew was crazy and impossible. But she was certainly the subject of my midnight confession.
@coyotesong Wow, a petophile on the internet. Who would have guessed it. I think this song is about a guy in love with a married women not a teenager. Sick bastard.
I've watched several videos of the Grass Roots and I don't believe that the bass player is really playing. That's a nice riff in midnight confession and the double picking throughout the whole song and he's not doing it. Does any of you other musicians pick up on that?
A lot of these videos are them just play-synching to the recordings, they're not really playing anything 'live'. Also, a lot of the 'double-picking' (??) you hear could be accomplished through hammer-ons, pull-offs and other such 'slurs' and not through picking at all, or it's possible they're due to the envelope of the song, and aren't actually present by themselves. A lot of times, the interplay between drums and bass create such 'audio illusions'.
@JoeDeceiver and that's what TV was during the 60's and 70's, even "live TV" had groups and singers synching to their recordings or their mikes might be hot so they were singing "live" and everything else was synched. We didn't know any better and we loved them just the same!!!
OMG. This is an exact description of my feelings for my wifes older sister. She was my first true love and I've never forgot her, but little sisters grow up We are now 45 years in the past, but the flame still burns.
Amazing im 44 played in music since early 80s and i don't know one song from these guys? I reconize the name but i don't know one song from them..Before my time i guess I think it sucks being born in late 60s..MTV was stupid they never played shit unless you like flock of seagulls that certainly has aged well? The bands that were not wanted and hated in the 80s are the ones that are still around doing good today..The 80s was fun for me but it was watered down and dorky commercial..I like to piss
@DodgerFan1988 ??? Whatchou talkin' 'bout? This song is some fine piece of oldie. I love it, but don't watch "The Office". I have never seen a sitcom about office work that was interesting.
in 7th grade this was the song for romance in my dream life with this cute guy i had a big crush on wow!!!!! those were the days when romance was clean !!!!!
Such talent and splendid songs/ arrangements ...I was introduced to their music when I was in HS ( 1968) and have loved their music ever since...I saw them in Vegas in 2005...and would love to see them again. ROB, WARREN, ET AL..You ARE SO FINE AND YOU ARE ALL ROCK !!!
Okay, I've been going on and on about Warren, but just DAMN look at Rob around 0:25! He looks like he just tumbled out of bed, and had NOT been only sleeping! :()
@damonlevine Do you know I just found this out a few days ago, but I remember upon hearing that his name was Creed on The Office it occurred to me there was only one other person I had ever heard of with that name...now if I had heard them mention his last name I would've known for sure! Only one Creed Bratton in this world.
I agree with the last post. "Soul person", yes, those are great songs, and many are favorites of mine. But if you want everyone to side with you, Ssick to the soul sites if you want more listeners to agree with you. No ill intent, but I would not tread on a black site like you have. Don't get me wrong I love Mo Town music as much as this. Time to chill out!.
Its amazing how a simple post of a song will provoke a racial related comment. Why can't you just enjoy the music. Its obvious that you searched for it and the reason wasn't race. The reason was because it sparked a memory or you like the song. Chill out people! Just listen to the music. Good to go?
Sly and the Family Stone had a lot of hits; and your list doesn't include Heart. The Grassroots only had 2 hits in the Top 10. I think Alvin and the Chipmunks had more than the Grassroots; and the Ohio Express's "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" was probably the greatest hit of the 20th Century.
"In the entire history of Rock n' Roll; only 9 bands (including The Beatles) have charted more hits on Billboard's Hot 100 than The Grass Roots."
This is utter malarkey. The Roots charted a lot of hits - 21 in fact, But in order to create this #10 ranking you'd have to throw out many black groups - 4 Tops 45 hits, Temptations 55 hits, Impressions 39 hits, Jacksons 43 hits, Kool & the Gang 33 hits, & for no reason except to restrict the category the GR's are in to try to force the false fact.
i was at the very wild 1982 concert in d.c. that was the concert that resulted in the beach boys not returning the next year thanks to interior secretary james watt and in 83 they got wayne newton. at the 82 concert, i remember someone shot a bottle rocket at rob grill. he stopped the song and yelled at the crowd "hey, that's not cool." he was very upset, but they finished a very good show. of the 600,000 in attendance, i think about 8 were sober.
I just found out today that Creed from THE OFFICE was in THE GRASS ROOTS.....I was shocked but love this little piece of trivia....great song...one of my faves!
My first crushes were for Rob and Warren at around age 13-I still have the photo album I made with cut out pics and articles from Tiger Beat and other teen mags !! LOL!!! Havent listened to their music in so many years-decide to check out to see if anyone posted any video and was so pleasantly surprised!! Their music still holds up today and ooohh--I had good taste in men--even way back then!!!LOL!!! Rob and Warren were so handsome!!! Great voices too!!
I watch this guy play that bass part effortlessly, and his meticulously sounding vocal turns me on. The band is tight. They are one of the best bands of the sixties I wish i could have seen them live!
You realise this is lip-synced right, to the studio track? Hey I love this song, but they are just miming to a backing track...Don't believe me? Watch 1:30 at the bassist's hand and listen to the many more notes being played compared to what his hand is doing.

executed with fine performances. I wish they were still around to perform as they had some great memorable hits. I love this group and seeing hem on YouTube...Thanks ConkyJoe !!
The Grassroots were right up there with Three Dog Night. They just didn't have as many great songs as Three Dog Night, but this is a gem. It came out when I was 13. What a great song to start your teenage years with. Peace.
The Grass Roots are great! I started listening to their music when I was in elementary school. I'm in my 40's and a grandmother and I still feel like a love-struck teenager whenever I hear one of their songs. They bring back lots of wonderful memories. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from listening to those LP's over and over again. I hope to continue to get as much pleasure from them when I'm 100. I'm sure all of the "old" Grass Roots fans feel the same way.
My favorite band in the late 60's and early 70's. Loved to rock out to them. Saw them at a Oldies Concert and again at a local establishment in the late 80's or early 90's. I finally got to rock out with them on the dance floor. I finally had my high school dream come true. Rob Grille was still as handsome as ever. LOL, where the mics for this? Isn't funny how they lipped the songs in early videos and it was so obvivious.
I just can't believe that these videos are available for us to enjoy. My kids don't realize how fortunate they are to be able to actually watch their favorite music vidoes any time they want and have so many avenues to enjoy them. Oops! Sounds like "a generation gap" comment....something my parents probably said about me. But seriously I've enjoyed every minute that I've spent listening to them. Thanks again.
I feel the same way! Evevyone that knows me can tell you i'm a 60's boy!, love this old music it's all i listen to! Brings back so many memories. You will never see bands like this today! They had talent,..great music,...great voices!!
Only 9 Acts have more top 100 songs than the Grass Roots .Think of all the Bands and Solo artist there has ever been .I wouldnt mind being in the Top 9 at all.
I saw these cats open a new Safeway shopping Center in Simi Valley in L.A. They were cool in person, don't forget, no real P.A., jUST SOME DUDES tryin to make it in the L.A. Music Scene~~see ya, tia promo
The lead guitarist is Creed Bratton of NBC's "The Office". In the booze cruise episode he plays a guitar solo after Michael Scott tries to play Smoke on the Water.
I became hopelessly addicted to them back in 1967 at the tender age of six. I don't think there's much chance I'll outgrow it. Just thought I'd share that with you.
I was 14 and still like them today, it brings back alot of good memories of hanging out with my older brother, and the corner pizza shop playing the pinball machine,, when they were a Nickel..lol
Thats funny same here, was 6 in 67, had the pleasure of speaking to Rob Grill after an oldies cocert in 86 and told him they were my favs since I was 6. Just thought Id share also
These guys are great. I sat next to them drinking a beer at the Cloud 9 bar in Logan Airport back in the early 70's while they were waiting for their flight.
I saw them on a reunion tour with the Turtles, The Byrds, Mark Lindsay and others - back in the 1980's. They dominated the show and sounded exactly as they did in the 70's. They also backed up Mark Lindsay doing the Paul Revere & Raiders stuff.
They were sexy then, and they're still incredibly sexy. I will feel the same way when I'm 90, like next year. Don't really give a shit if anyone finds this "disturbing."
Disturbing? O M G! No way! I saw them in the 80's ..My girlfriends and I were freaking out..He was so handsome!! I felt like a stupid school girl!! LOL
I've been hearing that song for the last 10 months on a classic pop FM radio station, without knowing who are the Grass Roots... I noticed it for the last 2 months and eventually loving it more and more... I think it's a very well-conceived super song!
The original was recorded by a Mexican-American group from East Los Angeles called the Evergreen Blues. You cannot tell the difference! Nobody was interested in promoting them so the rights were sold and the rest is history.
This video is soooo cool. They sure are sexy. I grew up with older siblings listening to these songs. Awsome! Oh, and by the way, someone said something negative about a bunch of 60 year olds on another site still rockin. What's wrong with that? Rock n Roll will never die, and it doesn't matter what generation, age and rock n roll is not an issue. There is no law stating that by 60 some years of age they have to stop rockin. I'll be rockin at my 90th birthday one day!!!!!!!!
There are pictures on yahoo/groups/grassroots. They are mostly current and not as appealing. There is something disturbing about watching 60 some year old groupies crooning over old rock stars. Check out the site and you will see what I mean. I feel like I am at my family reunion or something.
Watching these guys in all these old videos makes me realize many things now. All my boyfriends looked like Grill (including my husband). Warren looks like my cousin George. I do believe men were more attractive back then, including my husband. I love these 60's groups.
This is a jewel.

As for white groups who charted more hits than the Grass Roots, here's more than 9 right now:
Beatles 72, Stones 57, Chicago 50,
Beach Boys 59,ELO 27,Journey 26, Kiss 26,Kinks 23,Heart 30,Hollies 23,Eagles 22,Doobie Brothers 27,4 Seasons 48,
Fleetwood Mac 25,Aerosmith 28,Bee Gees 43,Bon Jovi 28 (& rising),Huey Lewis/News 22,Foreigner 22,Queen 27,
Dawn 25.
That's 21 groups w/more chart hits than the Grass Roots, and there are more. They did GREAT, but that factoid is FALSE.

That keyboard player is Warren Entner and he is so underated regarding the success this band had

@rjchstoner You are right on target with this comment! Not to put any of the others down, but Warren's "gutsy" enthusiam was awesome!

A beautiful song of unrequited love

i wasnt aware that the keyboard player sang the majority of the song, not rob grill..

Just thought I'd share that with you.
linco515 4 years ago 2
I was 14 and still like them today, it brings back alot of good memories of hanging out with my older brother, and the corner pizza shop playing the pinball machine,, when they were a Nickel..lol

I saw the same tour in 86 n Clearwater Fl. Great show. Got to meet Rob Grill and Mark Lindsey after show in parking lot;

OMG I saw them at Billy Bobs Texas in Ft Worth, best night of my life, after the concert, got autograph and A KISS from Mark Lindsay!

They were sexy then, and they're still incredibly sexy. I will feel the same way when I'm 90, like next year. Don't really give a shit if anyone finds this "disturbing."
linco515 4 years ago 5
here here
i do have a crush on them, and there's nothing i can do about it - even though I was born in the 80's

I've been hearing that song for the last 10 months on a classic pop FM radio station, without knowing who are the Grass Roots... I noticed it for the last 2 months and eventually loving it more and more... I think it's a very well-conceived super song!
retrogamah 4 years ago 2
The original was recorded by a Mexican-American group from East Los Angeles called the Evergreen Blues. You cannot tell the difference! Nobody was interested in promoting them so the rights were sold and the rest is history.

Thank you very much for the information!!!!

Great song, great group, absolutely lousy lip syncing!

There are pictures on yahoo/groups/grassroots. They are mostly current and not as appealing. There is something disturbing about watching 60 some year old groupies crooning over old rock stars. Check out the site and you will see what I mean. I feel like I am at my family reunion or something.

I saw this group in 1973. They were great! Wish I could go back in time. Thanks to whoever posted this video!!!

Hey the drummer has the traditional ruffled shirt. Very piraty. Sexy like the old romance novels.

Watching these guys in all these old videos makes me realize many things now. All my boyfriends looked like Grill (including my husband). Warren looks like my cousin George. I do believe men were more attractive back then, including my husband. I love these 60's groups.

Could you send me pictures? :) I love these 60s groups too. I never saw Warren with a stache before. GREAT VID!
