Face it, it's a hole in the story. And Tolkien's explanation is convenient to say the least. Bit of fun but no thats not "How it should have ended".. its a fantasy story so it ends exactly however the fucking writer wants it to end, the giant eagle flying straight to the volcano? hardly, the idea was that Sauron had gotten so powerful and had armys, minions etc reaching far places including controlling the skys and lands within sight that to fly would be suicide while walking and hidding MAY work, it was only possible to approach from air once the ring and Sauron was destroyed.. FAIL

XD,its indeed a good point,even without the Nazgul flying mounts,it wouldn´t have taken 15 minutes,but many hours,they would have been detected,by the Nazgul,or other dark forces,and Sauron would surely arrange a way to bring them down,with flying creatures of darkness,and Mordor also had huge trolls,that could launch a spear very high.

Sauron might have been brutish,but he wasn´t a complete idiot.

1. Tom Bombadil has no power outside of his Forest

2. Sauron was not yet powerful enough to awaken the Nazgul's flying Mounts

3. The Orcs were not yet mobilized in Mordor.... The only mobilized orcs were in Isengard at that time

4. The Eagles saved Gandalf from Sauruman and HATED the Nazgul and Sauron so why wouldn't they help them destroy the ring

5. The Eagles are older, in theory, then the rings and should be immune to their effects.

1) A platoon of non-orcs making their way on foot over a period of weeks through hostile territory (which has been fully militarized)

or

2) Airborne creatures flying through hostile airspace. Take note that Sauron did not have radar. In WWII, even with radar, it took large numbers of interceptors to harass bombers, and there were STILL bombers that made it through (on both sides).

@jasrogg it's about virginity. When you throw it in the fire, it is an allegory for your rebirth as a MAN, since you need to lose it in order to become one. The Sam guy was just helping frodo to lose it. Gollum wants to take it from him. Sauron is the pedophile who wants his virginity but couldn't quite get to him, and all the battles were just people who were fighting for/against the sanctity of chastity.
