  • I have lived in Shetland the whole of my life, and I'm 11. Yes, the weather can get really bad when it wants to, but it can be lovely in between the months of April- July. I love it here when it's summer, and it's a fine peerie place to live!

  • AH! SHETLAND`S ON A GOOD DAY,WHEN WEATHER IS FINE...WAIT UNTIL IT GET`S BAD!..BEEN THERE NUMEROUS TIMES,LOVE THE PLACE AND PEOPLE..WOULD MOVE THERE TOMORROW IF NOT FOR MY JOB HERE AND OTHER PERSONAL COMMITMENTS

  • I guess i know why its called shetland.. because it has shetty wheater.

  • Haha! This is common guys! Also, never say Shetland is (scotland) ever again!!!!!

  • Shetlands not always like this!! It was sunny today!

  • you should just have gone into the Wheel Bar instead.

  • you should just have gone into the Wheel Bar and watched from there!

  • That looks like a nice day try the weather at Saxa Vord.

  • thats shetland for ya... Come in Summer

  • Rubbish. I've been to the Shetland Islands many times and plan to move there permanently one day. The people are friendly and welcoming, the scenery is spectacular and the wildlife is stunning. And the Channel Islands -cheaper? You must be joking!! I think your badly spelt and grammatically incorrect post says more about you than it does about the Shetland Islands.

  • Your right I was having a bad day with a mother up there who has less than decent. It does say more about me your right, but there are difficulties up there like anywhere I guess. I ciuld defend what I say but better sometimes when feeling down about one individual don't slag off the island. Me I'd never go back shetland he'll on earth good people a plenty.

  • Fair enough. Sorry if I was a bit harsh. We all have bad days, and I appreciate your reply. No problem.

  • Jesus, Bloody worse than Ireland.

  • i live here, and the weather can be extremeley bad!

  • Lived in Shetland from 88 till 01 .... Good and bad memories, daughter still lives in Scalloway. People are nice but gossip like mad, nothing better to do:) I will go back for a holiday soon to show my missis where all my stories stem from!

  • HOLIDAY IN SHETLAND? HAHAHAAHA

  • Lol, looks just like a bad day in Wellington/NZ :)

  • No,wadder isna dat fine, but der isnoo ony o yun hurricanes un tornadoes here..:)

  • Lol i used to live in shetland miss the scenery but not the weather although you did get used to it after a while beautiful place though :)

  • Da wadder isna always lik dis, da laest twa weeks o june hiv been atween 20-30 degrees. I lik da high winds thoug, it makes you feel good tae be in your hoose.

An yes, aa da folk here is nice

  • I have heard, that it rained in Lerwick/Shetland 265 days per Year =) - but the Landscape is very nice!

Is it realy true, that there are Bus stops with sofas, Book, flowers and solar lamps??

  • Yeah, I think dat bus stop is in Unst. Its a peerie restaurant.

  • I didna say I hated it here!, I just hate the way it's over-hyped!. And as for yon ii magazine - yuck what a load o self gratifying blurb. "Our wondeful islands" blah, blah, blah!. Der dat mony unken folk here noo I feel like a stranger in my own home. You never see a Shetland name in da Times noo.

What move away because I telt da truth?.

Yeh, da past twartree weeks is been awesome:) but look when I posted my comment - lang before dis sun/heat wave came!.

  • Aint always like dis. And Shetland is not known for wild weather and strong winds! Right now its 21 degrees. Shetland is known for being one of the first places dat da Vikings step foot on in da invasion, and its da best place in EUROPE to come to if you like Bird watching. Im not being nasty, but for those that havent actually been here, come here for yourself. Then judge.

  • Looks like a bright and sunny summers day to an Icelander. Why are you folks complaining about this pleasant breeze?

  • Wow, a true video of Shetland. No sun, no blond beaches and cobalt sea. Shame you didn't also explain that it's not the land of milk and honey as the politically correct gestapo like to bleat on about. Infact, how on earth did this video slip past them?.

Anybody remember the journalist from the Birmingham Post who wrote a (critical) article about Shetland and was then "hung, drawn and quartered"?.

Well, all he did was tell the truth......

  • Look if you don't like it here move away.! Am sure your negativity won't be missed..!

Shetland does have nice beaches, st. ninians, Burra Mail Beach, bannanaminn beach, bruntland beach are just a few of the white sanded beaches I know.! and NO sun?!? Have u been here the past few days can't get rid of the bluddy thing..! LOL!

  • Shetland is known for its wild weather and strong winds!

  • wow----------I bet the people are very nice though---with this weather they have to be!!

  • i used to live in Shetland near St Ninains Isle x

  • Move to Norway..:)

  • Haha... you had some bad weather!!

It was really nice today.. slight breeze but nice and warm and sunny!! ( I live on Shetland by the way )

  • I live in shetlnad and it like this most the time but it good for december!

  • yep thats what you get in shetland or anywhere on the west coast of scotland due to the atlantic

  • Shetland is off the North coast though.

  • Yes I know but I was saying shetland like the west coast of Scotland is unsheltered from the Atlantic so it gets high winds and plenty of rain, England is largely sheltered by Ireland, I think you knew what I meant anyway, cheers

  • and the East coast of Scotland is also sheltered from the wild Atlantic!

anyway,on the couple of times I visited Shetland the weather was superb!

Did the Norwegians not claim sovereignty over Shetland until the 15th.C ?

  • Yes they did and their culture still survives so I believe and the faroe isles are norwegian, servere lack of trees on shetland makes it not that attractive to me personally but I was watching britain bc on tv tonight and it reminded me I have to visit Orkney to see scara brae and the other stone age monuments, think I'll go up on my motorcycle with a tent

  • The Faroe Islands are actually Danish

  • since 1948 but they were norse and ofcourse before that really anyone who settled there but it still retains norse culture I believe

  • fair dos, didn't know that. I supposed that they always had been Danish.

  • now i know why they call it shetland!

  • big poofter tucked up warm un its only a peerie breeze

  • I'm at uni too and missing it! Dad said da winds wir so bad, i missed oot on it :( No fair. 31 days till I'm back on da lovely island! :D

  • 'twas just a fair breeze

  • just a peerie breeze boy du's seen nuthin lol

  • Min. Its no dat bad.

  • well this is why tautie soup wiz invented!!!!! :)

  • That's what it's like out my window. Average day to be honest.

  • I got stuck on Shetland for 2 days duwe to bad snow. That video is nothing!

  • Oh Jeez! suck it up! the weathers always like yun! we can cope with it, so i canna be THAT bad!!!

he wid be as meid up when he wis eftir he'd heid twartree drams at da thule an bertie o' wadbister pulled doon his dra'ars an got oot his snirleee.

  • there is absolutely no need for that harrychown1989, scotland is a wonderful place to live and many brilliant folk. Waether may not be brilliant all the time, but last month we had the most sunshine one day out of the whole of britain. Also have you ever seen the northern lights? We get them every winter and they are fantastic.

  • ive seen the northern lights from lapland, finland. even more spectacular :)

but yes, i shouldnt have said it about the scots. its just most of them hate the english! im about 1 hour from scotland myself.

  • Yeah it is more spectacular from there but its still pretty amazing from this peerie group o islands in the north. Lots of Scots dont like the english, but lots of english dont like the scots. It goes both ways unfortunatley.

  • i wud fuckin live there, in fact i do

  • Die in a fire.

  • That's just nasty. I'd like to see where you live. :(

  • North Yorkshire, England

Type it on google images ;) check the coast and the dales and the moors, its really quite beautiful

  • noo noo bairns! whits aah dis bikerin aboot?! i'm from shetland and it is a lovely place to visit/live. the majority of us are friendly but it has the odd tough guy like every other place. we are not interbred and we have for many years provided our own money and more thank you very much ronaldmcburger.

  • it wasn't england that paid for shetland's roads, top class lesiure centres etc etc. it was shetland's oil that paid for that....last year the english govt. took £890m in taxes from the bp owned sullom voe oil terminal.

i also assume that you had some problems with shetland's people? we do have the occasional arsehole up here but the problem's no worse than anywhere else and if your attitude was the same when you were here as it is in your post then i'm not suprised that you had problems.

  • Oh my God you are actually very ignorant aren't you? Shetland wasn't 'living a vile, miserable place with no roads' (terrible grammar by the way). England has never had to 'pay tax to support' Shetland. Shetlanders had to live off of their own hard work whilst paying off tyrant Scottish Lairds. The British Government has actually received £200 Billion from the oil in Shetland's waters so I think Shetland more than deserves any rewards it gets in Government funding.

  • Ha ha! Fond memories of Thule! Lived there 1975 to 1979. Weather like this was regular! I remember one day the highest gust was 126 mph! Rain or snow most times. Sayin that tho i loved being there despite some of the attitudes against non sheltys. We really did mix in with the culture, and had some lovely friends. Never had to lock our door, people arriving after the pub, partying and "yarning" till dawn!

Our croft burnt down, and we only just escaped with our lives! Get in touch if you remember

  • Sare!

  • Don't call it Scotland please.

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Simply. Its a gift.

  • ARE YOOH TRYING TO MAKE SHETLAND LOOK BAD !!!!

shetland is an amzing place to stay the weather isnt that bad !!

and i agree ship yun f**Kin sooth moothd bastard oot of here!

its no place for them !

  • I think you mean Sooth Moother! The usual insult for someone who has arrived from the more enlightened mainland! Oh, and the weather is almost always as its depicted in this vid in my experience! Tho there are some beautiful respites, and not all the people are as fascist as you are! Had some lovely friends up there! Hope you mature as you grow older!

  • shetland is the best palce in the world so stop slagging it off

  • more like shitland

  • oh ho ho ho, you're so funny. What an intelligent play on words.

  • I lived in Shetland from 1976 to 1978. The weather you have shown is typical Shetland weather. Nothing unusal at all. Why do you think there are no trees? The loacls would be greeting me with words line 'Aye, fine day'. I thank godf I left there at the first opportunity I had. Should be used for prisoners instead of interbreeding. So they still have just 3 surnames? Leask, Sutherland and Johnstone?

  • Was there 1975 to 1979, and mostly agree with you. I noted the weather for the first 2 months after we arrived, it rained or snowed EVERY single day, and usually it was horizontal stuff!

  • i live in shetland to and i think dat it is probly da best place 2 live in scotland and uv just made it look horrible thanks.

  • i live in shetland too, its bad weather but not all the time, one of the best places to live is here

  • LOL I remember the Shetland weather very well. I worked in the Lerwick hotel shortly after it was built for 3 years. Although the weather was rotten a lot of the time I had a wonderful time there and the Shetland people are about the friendliest you'll meet anywhere.

  • The locals are great, see the English who have taken over are the pits and should be deported.

  • Too right, there are too many FEBs up here, and if you're wondering what a FEB is, the E stands for English.

  • Aaaah, one of the many interbred Leask family! Is your first name Willy, Geordie, Addy or Magnus? Never met a more 2 faced race of people in my life, but thankfully not all like you!

  • This was a reply to leasky, see his/her nasty comment below but somehow it doesnt show as a reply to that person!

  • ... I LIVE IN SHETLAND! take that back you prick!

  • I live here!?!?

  • happy new year right back. and yeah, that's a bit mild. :P

  • I'm a born bred Shetlander and you should try the weather here in Winter usually between Jan/Feb we can experience extreme winds. Happy New Year to all who view this video.

  • Ah the Auld Rock, loved that weather so much I moved to Oz !

  • Shetland rocks. The weather is awesome. This summer was the warmest on record too.

  • What lousy weather? I was there in September 2006 and the day was delightfully sunny, albeit a tad brisk. Stunning coast line and scenery, just stunning. Cute fat ponies. Why couldn't it have Florida type weather year round. Maybe soon if global warming is for real? We'd move!!!.

  • The weather is designed to keep you soft sooth-moothers oot

  • Ha Ha your to right, i put up with it for 12 years and 3 up helly Aa's now i'm back hame in England! (I do miss fishing off cunningsburgh, getting pissed in the lounge and the good crack though)

  • well so it was not that bad that only lasted 2 days. 3 days later then it was very windy but only for a day, in all not that bad.
