I'm wondering could it be that Xenophobe was intended to be a official Alien licensed product? Just that they somehow lost the license but decided to go ahead and release it anyway with some changes to avoid copyright. This could explain why there is no music playing in the background.
they really should have used music during game play for this game. the brief audio awesomeness at the beginning is needed when you're just shooting stuff with no audio awesomeness. no xeno
in the 80's...they used to put a game like xenophobe right at the entrance of the local arcade just to draw kids in to the awesomeness.....(other games they used to put there were gauntlet, spy hunter, 720 degrees, spy hunter, and mach 3...
i just played this for the first time ever, had only ever seen it inamoungst a pile of roms... wow, stay away!... the first thing i done was to come online and see if their were any reviews... CGR dont do the shittness of this game justice! its bad...real bad, bored after like 3 rooms bad!
I can't believe you actually had good things to say about this game-I too enjoyed the arcade version and then bought the nes version and felt so ripped off It is on my list of shit games and it's a big list!
Ahhhh......Hill's. My mom worked at one when Iwas growing up. Ours had a Final Fight machine, Ghosts and Goblins machine, and WWF Wrestlefest machine. And if you were under 12 years old, you could get a free small popcorn.
The arcade version was sweet and such a game really isnt possible to recreate at home unless you buy the original arcade machine. Cool vid, thanks for making it. You made me want to play that darn game.
Apparently there's a Xenophobe port for the 2600. That probably is not the best version about, not least since I can't imagine how it would play with just 1 button.
Maybe the arcade game really was a undiscovered great, but neither of the console versions I've played suggest that. If I chance upon an arcade machine somehow, I'll be sure to check it out, but otherwise, I'm not too bothered about the thing.
man, i remember this pretty much as you do, memories seem more fun than the game actually was. Each "level" was EXACTLY the same and did not get harder, you had a crappy gun at the start of each level even if you upgrade at any point. Then between levels you had to wait as they inventoried everything you have collected through the entire game. Like ya said, booooring! But fond memories nonetheless.

The NES version of this game proved that Nintendo was not pushing the limits of their graphics in their previous games. This game and Super Mario Brothers 3 proved what power the system had. So many consoles (even today) never push the limits of what their systems can handle.
That's not completely true, the PS2 was pushed pretty hard with a few games, God of War, Devil May Cry, Grand Turismo. Though I will say it's rare to see a system pushed all the way.
And you're not completely disagreeing with me. I never said that it applied for ALL games , I just said each console will many times never push the limits of what their consoles can handle.
Any time government tries to step in and make things FAIR, they just make things unfair. It is better if Government just stayed out of our lives and our paychecks. And also layed off the bail outs and just let the market work by itself. FDR already proved that the New Deal was a failure. It didn't do anything for 10 years. And now Obama is trying to mirror that New Deal, which is going to ruin our economy for another many years.
