Love watching Makarova. She's so strong and precise, veritably starched and ironed, just like her tutu. Monumental in quality. But she seems a bit mismatched with Baryshnikov, who is grace, lightness, and fluidity. And he may be a little small for her. He seems to shudder under the weight of a lift. Still, love to watch this one. Two greats performing extremely well.
I believe that Makarova danced only Florine at the Kirov. I think that her variation on this dvd shows why. Everything is quite glorious except the magnitude - it is like a dollhouse miniature of, for example, a Kolpakova or a Sizova recorded performance of the same variation.
@bestmaster3 Thank you! This is exactly true! Bot these great dancers are NOT suited for this ballet, when one thinks of Petersburg's magnificent tradition
Nao existe outro bailarino que chegue aos pes de MISCHA ,e com Natalia Makarova esta perfeito.Isto tambem vale para sua performance em DOM QUIXOTE,Baryshnikov esta PERFEITO.
5:11 to 6:25, BEST PARTS, Mikhail soloing, now THAT'S Dance. He literally had to carry her through her parts, even during the lifts, she's walking 89% of the time. Sad, sad, sad.
There's so much more to Baryshnikov than his brilliant artistic ballet technique. He does very well when it comes to romancing women, and to me, that's also a big plus. But many people who are unfamiliar with ballet do not realize that dancers like Baryshnikov also are great athletes. Ballet demands that, and many people recognize that his athleticism would have made him a star in many sports. Makarova was still very good, but she lost something after giving birth/
IMO, Natasha is one of the BEST prima ballerinas of all time! - not just of 'her generation'. She was elegant, fluid and technically flawless. (FYI, in 1965 she won the Gold Medal at Varna.) Although slight and fragile looking, she had strong legs and feet; and her ethereal arms are legendary. Her roles included Sleeping Beauty, both with ABT and the Royal Ballet, which she also stages. I saw her dance live in the '70s-'80s at ABT, partnered equally well by Baryshnikov and Bujones.
We were so agog over Russian defectors in the '60's-'70's we failed to appreciate someone who came from our own backyard: Miami-born FERNANDO BUJONES. In 1974 he won the Gold Medal at Varna in the adult category - at age 19! (Also received a special award for technical achievement.) Bujones is now recognized as one of the greatest classical danseurs of the 20th C - along with Baryshnikov - and deservedly so. I saw both dance live with ABT in the '70's-'80's so I know whereof I speak.
i started when i just turned 13 and i got put straight into a grade 5 class because that was were everyone else my age was, and i just took the grade a couple of weeks ago! :)
You're never too old! You may be too old to take it as a career! But as a hobby it would work beautifully! You could still tell your children you were En Pointe!
Ballerina assolutas- Galina Ulanova, Maya Plisetskaya, Alicia Alonso and Margot Fonteyn. As far as I'm concerned, it's an absurdity that Makarova wasn't awarded this title.
Not too my knowledge, or any of the resources I've checked. The originals were Pierina Legnani- who by the way was the first to perform 32 fouette, and Mathilde Kschessinska. Thanks for the question, because now I'm totally curious.
I think tigereyes5 means Eva Evdokimova, she wasn't Danish but she did study in Denmark for some time, I think. Her La Sylphide is perfect, you can find some fragments here on youtube.
I love ballet and these dancers. I claim no expertise and know that choreography can be even substantially changed for the classics. Still, I'm surprised that a prima ballerina assoluta like Makarova doesn't perform the sequence of three fish dives here. She dances the alternative choreography beautifully, but I would have liked to see her do the dives as I've usually seen them performed. Does anyone know who choreographed this ABT production? I'm curious is all and not interested in debate.
I think it was David Blair, who had staged Swan Lake for ABT earlier. In the 70s they were doing his version of SL (which by the way was much better than the current one -- there is an out of print video of it with Ivan Nagy and Makarova).
Thanks, but assoluta where at the Kirov? I am searching all my ballet books and on internet and I cannot find anything related to the subject. Please, can you advise?
i don't particularly like the sleeping beauty pas de deux... in my opinion, the choreography and music are a bit stale compared to don q, corsaire, bayadere, or pharoah's daughter. (what can i say, i'm russian = glamor, virtuoso, and theatricality hehe)
But Makarova and Baryshnikov really make this worth watching!
There are videos here on YouTube of Baryshnikov's contemporaries dancing; Vasiliev, Soleviev and Panov. Watch their dancing filmed at about the same time.
Baryshnikov's influence on the world of dance is still being felt. He is the standard to which all other aspire.
Awful awful pad de deux of La Belle au Bois dormante.
Baryshnikov and Makarova, TOTALLY OVERRATED. Had they not defected they would have been remembered as NOTHING. Which is what they are and deserve to be. FILTH.
It's just fantastic to be able to see this. such interesing detail -- the shoulder sits, the way she brings her arm down past his cheek when she does her penche.... She looks so stylized.
In addition to being totally irrelevant to watching 2 of the greatest dancers ever to step on a stage, do you know for certain that they're not helping less well-off, younger dancers? I find your line of thinking bizarre and ignorant. Please stick to the subject at hand, or find another venue to express your views.
