  • But, AdArmand, Viv' WAS a great stage actress! She loved that much more than making movies, and she always gave wonderful performances in her plays. So yes she had genius in screen acting but she had also a great talent for the stage, and that's how she has been known at the beggining of her career, because she acted in plays before making movies.

  • I love Viv!!!!!! I think Larry was kind of mean.

  • this is one of my favorite clips of vivien leigh and larry

  • Most people are unaware that Vivien Leigh was bi-polar and her illness increased through the years. Only those close to her were aware how devastating it was and medical techonology was not very advanced at the time to correct this. Yet she won two Oscars and a Tony and was a very great actress and woman, and very intelligent. She hated Hollywood and loved the stage but it was because of her illness that prevented her from working more. Had she been able she would have matured with Olivier.

  • Thank you for posting this. Thanks to Olivier, I was able to control my stutter as a child, by listening to his albums. I oft imagine what it was like to see these brilliant performers on stage.

Thank you for posting,so we might have a taste. How sad that so few performers today I work in even acknowledge the genius of those who came before.

  • Poor, poor Viv, she wanted so much to be a great stage actress. She completely disregarded the fact that her true genius was in SCREEN ACTING which is completely different. Vivien WAS brilliant but you never would be known it on stage.

  • Yes, especially if you had listened to this audio clip (with the greatest possible respect to Sir Olivier).

  • -Do you notice that I have a rather long nose. It is the Roman nose, Cleopatra.

    -Aaaaaaaaaaah !!.

  • Yet another wonderfully perfect video!!! Please keep them coming.

  • I saw Larry in his last play," The Party"at the Old Vic,and count myself very lucky. This selection of their stage lives,

with the photos and programs was just great.

  • Dear vlo1913 - WHAT a WONDERFUL find ! I have the ANTHONY & C scene 'IAM DYING, EGYPT,DYING' from the BBC CD 'ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE'. Was this clip taken from ANOTHER CD by the BBC? If you have more of this recording of CAESAR (a FIRST hearing for me) then I would be very willing to purchase or exchange for copies of anything from my HUGE LO audio collection. I was asked to raise the toast to him at Notley Abbey on 22nd May.

    Best - Christopher Farries

  • I am not sure where this show originated from as I purchased this CD from EBAY which was a compilation of various radio programmes. Unfortunately this is the only scene from Caesar I have possession of. Wow, lucky you that you were at Notley Abbey. Feel free to email me if you would like a copy of this. Thanks for viewing...:O)

  • Thank you so much for the courtesy of your reply. My Olivier collection is so large that I had forgot I actually had this recording which I found about ten minutes ago ! Notley is more magical than imagination ! Miss Leigh's prized yellow bath lays in a 'bath graveyard' in the grounds. Larry's mound (where he proclaimed his speeches) still exists. Best - Christopher Farries

  • Dear Christopher

Very interested to hear of your LO collection, and particularly the centenary celebration at Notley. I have been a devotee since I saw Henry V on telly as a teenager, and decided there and then that it was the best film I'd ever seen; a view I haven't changed yet!

Did you ever see him perform in the theatre? How did you come to be invited to Notley? Is the present owner a fan?

    Regards

    Raymond Baggaley

  • Dear Mr Baggaley - Yes, I saw Sir many times in the theatre. Notley is now a wedding venue. The new owners were very 'sympathetic' to the Olivier Centenary and on the 22nd May I was invited to raise the toast to Sir in the presence of The Earl of Buckingham and assembled gathering and they threw a huge party the following Saturday to celebrate. I gave a speech in the Olivier's old drawing room (the Abbot's Hall) and Sir Donald Sinden joined me in anecdote to the crowd of three hundred.

  • Christopher (if I may!)

Fascinating. I was disappointed (but not surprised)that the centenary went largely unremarked in the media. I was hoping for a new documentary, or a film season at the least. I suppose the fact is that Olivier's acting style is rather out of fashion at the moment, though I have no doubt this will not always be the case.

I am looking forward to the new cinema release of Henry VI this month.

  • Look at BFI site - his Shakesp. films are to be projected onto the tower at the Nash. The statue of him as HAMLET is to be unveiled in Theatre Square on September 23rd. He was truly a 'golden-man' - there will never be another. This clip from C&C is marvellous as is compilation film/pics:

  • It seems like they had a ,lot of fun in the theater. :) Thanks a lot. ;)

  • Thank you for this. The photos are wonderful, and include a few that I haven't seen before. And where did you get that audio clip of C&C? I had no idea that it existed.

  • I got this as well as the others from EBAY. Glad you enjoyed it...:O)
