I want to say that the Apple's adverts and machines were better but it really doesn't matter. In the type of market there, it didn't matter whose was better, it was whose was marketed and licensed out. MS was probably guided by profit and market response, Apple by their ideology which at that point was their undoing post 1984. Xerox Alto was a state of art microcomputer at the time. It was made by researchers for researchers. Apple got only to see and explore the part of the stuff Xerox did in exchange for a stock share. They've made their own implementation of what they saw improving on some bits of UI.

Microsoft is only behind at this point because if they pushed any harder, they would flat-out monopolize the whole industry, and they can't have that happen for obvious legal reasons. Windows 7 was a massive stretch and they've been attacked because of it's success.

Apple's first OS was based off of Microsoft's Basic OS, which Apple basically begged them for... Apple is not better than MS and MS is not better than Apple. Apple's first OS was in fact written by Steve Wozniak, and was called Integer Basic.  MS Basic was ported over to the Apple ][, Apple's second computer.

And if Apple (and Woz) weren't around, we'd probably still be using computers that gave their responses through blinking lights rather than on a screen.
