Thanks for posting this. Eve since seeking a picture of this creature in the Rptiles volume of a Time Life series of books marketed to children I've been curious about them.
@Venckman There is a legless lizard in southern California, but it is just a lizard with no legs. Bipes are part of a different suborder of reptiles and are only found in Mexico.
@CarlJFranklin Found a skin last year at work that clearly mole-like claws on two short front limbs, and a total absence of hind limbs on a snake-like body. What else could it have been?
I would just like to add that my mother found one of these in our front yard under some black plastic. We live in Sydney Australia. Is it odd to find one out here?
Due to their mole-like hands, the name "mole lizard" is more accurate of a common name. However, amphisbaenians as a group are called worm lizards. Also Bipes (mole lizards) are the only 'worm lizards' with functional limbs.
First time I have seen one move, man they are incredible. Believe it or not it's not a lizard, or even a reptile. It's in between a lot of stuff on the reptile/animal web and what not.

@Venckman More than likely it was a southern alligator lizard. They are pretty common in southern California.
In fact alligator lizards have been misidentified as mole lizards before because of their elongated body and short limbs.
Sometimes when they shed the skin from the hind limbs gets stuck inside the shed.
Alligator lizards also shed in one piece like snakes do.
Email a photo of any sheds you have and I can confirm if it belongs to a Bipes (mole lizard) or not.

@CarlJFranklin I did not pick the skin up, but I did take a picture of it. I will track it down.
