@Elimnio He just doesn't bother switching to a clean setting when playing slow and talking you through it. It is an overdriven setting on a low volume which tends to sound a little nasty. It sounds better when he plays it with open volume but then he can't talk (or he can but you wouldn't hear what he was saying).I don't really care, you can hear what he does quite well this way and that is the point of the exercise. On his records (studio or live) he has a great tone.

@Soldano88 It's not really the maple neck as it is a mix of his pickups and the fact that he keeps the volume turned down to make it sounds more "clear" than "muddy" or distorted, so you can actually hear every note. If you watch most of his instructionals even when he's playing on his "fireman" guitar with the injector pickups and ebony fingerboard it's still abit twangy till he turns the volume all the way up.

I played along with this and it is all so counterintuative to me. How can someone taking the least obvious route end up playing so fast? It does give him that unique popping sound that makes it more interesting than the majority of shredders who do take the obvious route and end up sounding all the same.

Perhaps it isn't faster than the typical arpeggio/sweep player but he does make every note noticable and count this way. They all stand out. I love it.

I like these shred lessons. They'll play something an intermediate level player can do. I get all excited. I think, "That's cool, I can do that." Then, they'll say, "...and here it is at regular tempo with some extra notes thrown in." It kind of deflates my ego.

It is a lot bigger than the wizard necks on the RG's, the pickups don't have a real good sound, that upside down headstock is a pain in the arse, and it just has an all around weird vibe to it. Mine still looks brand new. Wanna buy it? :))

Why do people always whine about PGs tone in these videos ?

1. The sound quality is shit.

2. Its a basic instructional video, with basically a crappy amp and probably a basic Ibanez PGM for the instructional.

Look at his other "lessons" from videos from his SFBADR or Fuzz Universe instructionals. The tone is all there because he has his entire setup to work with.

Just be thankful he is a bro for doing these instructionals
