dus je komt uit nederland ik ben dit thuis ook aan het doen maar dan niet met een doodshoofd maar een middelvinger standbeeltje (incase you can't speak dutch i said i did this but not with a scull but with a ceramic middelfinger)
That skull turned out really well. Even using sand casting and Foam burnout. I would have thought the foam would have left some residual pockets of goo that would mar the finished project. Maybe its on the bottom or back where you were able to buff it out. Regardless Really nice finished skull.
Wait I just wanna be sure I understand this one right; the original skull was a foam decoration skull, right? Meaning, you simply put it under some sand and applied the lost foam technique?
It make sense, since normally one would have to make the original foam stuff, but now it's already made. Looks cool, summer project for me.
Does the foam burn away cleanly leaving a good clean casting? Or are there pieces of foam residue left that would need to be patched or repaired with something such as liquid steel. I would like to try something such as this but it has been over 50 years since my last playing with metal casting and I did not use foam way back then. Thanks
The reason for the price differential is that the price per ton for PURE CLEAN ALUMINUM INGOT and the price for dirty scrap aluminum ALLOY with gas impurities and zinc, tin, etc..etc.. is obviously going to be much different. Thanks for the vid though, pretty neat!
excellant, ima skull lover and wanting to try a little foundry work and i was actually thinking of trying this, obviouly it worked well for you, so im gonna have to try this
i started casting these skulls about 4 years ago, i am a miantenance worker in an iron fround gray/ductile. Built my furnace 5 year ago, the skulls i found were a we bit smaller than yours, but people can really be amazed with something thats so simple to do. BTW u posted this video on my bday. kinda spooky
@LuberthDijkman If you are good at mold manufacturing, you can produce a casting mold with a plastic one, OR produce a mold and add foam to MAKE a foam one. If that is the case, look through Ebay for an anatomy skull, preferably smaller than normal size ("Bucky" skulls come in several sizes) and then try that. Alternatively, search Foam Skull on there and you'd be surprised just what comes up.
so did you have to make a skull out of foam first i,m new to foam casting

MirroredHorizon 1 year ago
@MirroredHorizon no all you need is a piece of foam the size of the skull and then shape it or buy one pre-cut
then by sand casting it you can make incredably accurate castings

how did you make the indentations of the eyesockets and cheeks etc?
I mean, if you fill it up with the sand, you can't get the original skull out without ruining the mould, can you?

There. I watched it! Really turned out nice! Where's the crown? LOL
Like the music, too.. I gotta do one of those..
ThorsgaardFoundry 3 years ago
In your video it looks like you made the mold/cast sand yourself
could / would you maybe desribe in more detail how to make it
is it little water with cement and fine sand?
i treid a simple gips test mold but the water did bubble steam the aluminium
the special red sticky sand is nice but expensive
i saw you mix i think water with portland cement powder
LuberthDijkman 3 years ago
cool! A response! Well, I'm on dial-up so will have to see the vids tonight while I'm at work..
