I looked at the links in your google search. If you read the full sentence it states that in certain deaf individuals success rates will be low due to some sort of complication - hence the tests they do first to make sure the individual is suitable before implantion occurs.
I'm not for or against the cochlear implant business, I just think one needs to be careful not to take words out of context. But you are right that they do need to make the statistics more transparent to the public.
@tincancompany =D smile. Believe me, I've been trying to find valid reports based on those studies. There was only one valuable research I found at Indiana Univeristy, Dr. David Pisoni. good info about "Executive Functioning" on each child with CI, their ability to function by age 30? I've been putting off on "follow up" vlog. Soon - I promise. Oh - while I searched for answers, many doors are closed on CI areas. It's starting to fade' as more and more doctors and scientists r into stem cells.
I met adult who volunteered to take cochlear implant: headache and static at the most of time. Others said some not function at all and had surgery few times. It is not working and leave it and nothing to do with it. That is shocking information from them . Nothing more and wish to ask children who can speak out but sadden they did not know the exposure how to do is speak out. I pray one strong child( with ci survivor can bring up the action.)
So I ask you .... everywhere I read many information : with blue highlight says FDA APPROVED. what is it.? So I checked FDA information with CI no exist and also Warning risk etc on FDA. I asked for statistics for Ci .. There is none. I knew something wrong is Fishy !
@gwenxion exactly, same thing with my findings. FDA do list many different risks and I received emails from all who have CIs starting at young, they experience mild to severe side effects. Common thing I see is seizure.
I wear cochlear implants and am smart enough to know that a child implanted at a early age will have much better experience than someone who waited until later in life. I was lucky to have lost my hearing over time, but totally understand why so many people are against it..... but have the truly been informed?
@phaze101200oo You mentioned you're smart enough; to know that their name isn't yours. The people around them aren't the same people around you. To be clear; CI doesn't help you smart, you just learned everything to become more of what you already are.
Imagine... England won American's land in 1815 and what does it look like today? Big different and so the real you was already gone and you will never know the real you without a CI. Whatever she said, is fighting to save all of you.
Aguabo, AMEN!!!!!! AMEN TO THAT! I was one of the few that was stucked a ci on me at a young age, But To this day It has been progressing well, No failure yet so i've been lucky, but when i was young...i wasnt lucky.. because implant at a young age cause Grand Mal Seizures due to the child's brain/skull still growing and at a later age....BADD HEADACHES. One friend of my actually had her leaking and cause an infection in her head....I am giving a lecture to a classroom about ci & will say all.
sorry miss expert research girl, but i only saw, what, 2 cited sources without direct links? and one was wikipedia no less. when doing papers in school i've always been told i will be dropped from the class if i cite wikipedia
I there are stories both of success and of failure, the same with everything. If it works for one person it may not work for another. What I don't like, is when the hospitals who sell the implants aren't informing the parents about sign language, Deaf culture, or exposing them to any Deaf adults. They only tell them that their child will be "normal" "successful" with the implant. They do not talk to the parents about Deaf is "normal" and MANY successfull Deaf people! Hospitals are for profit.
@fairysign1 True, what normalcy are they trying to determine about us? very subjective. I have no problem with Deaf adults who want CI because they take self-charge of their own life by doing research, learning about risks/coverage of insurance and signing off medical consent themselves. Children cannot do these, it's better to wait til they are adults. I received conculsive research that CIs do not help to restore normal hearing sounds. I hate moneymongers and fearmongers.
C.I. is illegal and dangerous, period. One of my friends had her C.I. done, the sound was improved little bit but it died after 5 years. Yep, ONLY last 5 years. So they removed the rest of them minus the device, it stays in her skull. Parents should wait till deaf children to become older and let them choose to have or not without any pressure by doctors, family, friends or/and others.
i aint no surprised abt low success rate. so what... 258... i compared my son and another boy are much similar age 5 or 6. we believed in asl as primary language. another boy is fluent in english, ng asl. why? of course, hearing parent believe in oral. the result is another boy wore bililingial and my son is single, not need bilinigual. myself, ci, i communited another boy and i still dont und him!
last month, my son need reprog ci and result 95% level with hearing level and same age!
the quote she uses is taken completely out of context. what it actually says in the article is as follows: "For example, some patients suffer from deafness medial to the cochlea - typically acoustic neuromas. Implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with these people, as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along."
Also, please understand that there are statistics abounding when it comes to cochlear implants. The problem in achieving an overall 'success rate' is that there are many different kinds of people who receive implants and for different reasons. You may have a deaf-from-birth 50-year-old who just wants the implant to hear her alarm. If she can hear the alarm but not understand speech, is that considered a success?
But ultimately, your opinion of CIs is your own opinion. I'm just trying to clarify
i was thought abt implants so they test me w implants i hears 100 percnts i thought abt implants but i rather not cuz can mess up when get old so i use power bte aids it s good i hear 90 percents
i have known few people tat has parent tat put ci on em while they were child and they were born hard of hearing and now they are commmpetely deaf!!!! they were no longer hard of hearing cuz of ci..... i totallly agree with u tat child shld decide for emself when they get older
She don't understand. a few people have a big problem with healtry nerve. (gehoorzenuw is defect). It's only 10 procent deaf people that have damaged hearing nerve. ABI will be solution for this group poeple
all about CI is your opinion and I respect it. but you talk like if parents don't think over about CI, if this is new for them, obviously, they (at least, a great part of them) research about CI over and over again, talk w/ CI users, etc.
I read it on Wikipedia's page and the "low sucess rate" concerns with people have acoustic neuromas. So, please, don't distort the facts.
p.s.: sorry about my English, but I think you can understand me.
hi i wear cochlear implant and i've had it for 13 years... so then i have this new implant with a new technology, i know alot about it.. its very good.. i can hear everything even talking on phone... i also know asl. there are two channels that none of the cochlear implant people haven't been using it causes nerves damage and electric shocks. so i decided to see if it will work for me then it did shock.. i told them to closed them. but hey i'm fine and i can still hear with this new implant
" Without being informed?"... My parents asked the doctor many questions. I mean they were being very careful back then because a cochlear implant was very expensive and risky. Who cares about statistics? Not me because it doesn't really mean anything and many people are too weak and stupid to use CI. I know it is sounds crazy but that what it is. People should know that the CI aren't 100% guarantee. The sooner the person gets it, the better chance of being successful with CI. I used to hate..

...although I would be a little suspicious of anyone who wants to sell you FOUR hearing aids, two for just in case. That is ridiculous! New and better models are coming out constantly. If your current ones broke, you could get them fixed (far cheaper than having 2 additional aids), or update them to a newer model with better technology. I bet your audiologist was pretty pleased with him/herself for selling four aids to one person!
Iv show this video to my mum because she dont know the trust acout CI. I'm Ci user but not anymore. Ive give them up because it's not worth for me BUT I use them for my own safety. I glad my mum now realised why i'm not succesful to learn to speak and community with hearning . my mum now felt shocked when she see this fact " No Resutls No Statistics Nothing exits in thier records " I show it all my hearning friends who think i'm lazy to learn how to speak .
I looked at the Wiki article referenced in the video. "Low success rate" is indeed there. The article states: "For example, some patients suffer from deafness medial to the cochlea - typically acoustic neuromas. Implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with these people, as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along." The "low success rate" in the wiki page is referring to candidates with an additional and specific medical condition.
I think first before you even start your research you needed to define what "success" is. I also really need to point out that wikipedia is not a reliable source of information. If people want to know the statistics on the cochlear implant they should be talking to those who have them.
I'm a grad student in Early Oral Intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. I did the same search as you and was indeed surprised to see that wikipedia had something about a "low success rate". However, upon further inquiry, I saw that the low success rate referred to individuals with an acoustic neuroma. Because a CI stimulates the auditory nerve directly, people with a damaged nerve won't benefit from a CI like others. It's important to look at the reason behind the facts.
Not only in Wikipedia discussed that part. It was linked to "HearAgain" website which said the same thing, it is not reliable source but my question is... Why would someone get a chance to edit and remove that language. It is all about controversial topic. I have researched that Dr. David Pisoni from Indiana Unviersity who announced that "CIs do not help to restore normal hearing sounds"
Another researcher claimed that CI toddlers would delay if using monolingual approach. I hope you are also studying ASL and Bilingual because they work. With ASL, it will boost children's confidence to speaking. Nothing to loose, really. Did you look up at those sources I attached on another vlog, "CBS is a Hoax"? Good luck at Graduate school. =D
@aguabo My dad was fluent in ASL and spent a lot of time teaching me to finger spell... but i'm nowhere near proficient. My focus has been on working with kids with hearing aids and cochlear implants. My cousin, though (who is hearing) used Baby Sign and i can definitely see that it helped her before she learned to speak to communicate with her mom! Asking for "more milk" instead of crying is DEFINITELY preferable!
@kkmarue Agree, Signing helps babies & parents big time. Their vocal cords dont develop 'til abt age 3 & it wld be fully developed by age 7? We need to expose them to many words. Language deprivation is #1 big pblm in Deaf children. You keep eyes on those lil kids who can't learn how to speak, plz make parents learn signing right away. I am sorry about your dad, was he Deaf?
@aguabo No, he wasn't. He had a good friend whose brother is Deaf. My uncle and her husband went to a residential school for the Deaf as well. The vocal cords aren't fully developed in the sense that the cartilage-to-soft tissue ratio isn't the same as in an adult. Kids say their first words by 12 months and begin putting words together by 24 months. I'm watching a baby develop new words almost every day!
@kkmarue just remind yourself that we should never toss away CI failures because they are human. Don't go looking for CI success. I get sick and tired of technologies defining us and then new technology comes along , they trash our old technology (like hearing aids) by saying HA is not good enough or make us hearing enough. There is a new type of CI that just came out and they are already trashing older version. This make me appreciate ASL, at least it treat me as human instead of experiment
thank you so so much for making this video. now i have something to reference people to to make them stop and think a moment. thanks again for taking the time to research and try and make a difference and stop this horrible and unethical problem. i am saving this vid right to my favorites.
why, are you only selecting what u want posted, I ask u a few more ?, and also told u that once my child reaches a certain age i will make sure he learns asl, becuase it would be beneficial for him.. live your live and let god take care of eveyone else's or do u believe in god? went to your page, and a lot of those people do not look, like god fearing people, but i do pray for you
Me busy here and there... I lost the track on who to approve or disapprove. sorry about this. I recommend you to go on Rachel Coleman's blog. She has a Deaf daughter with CI. Her arguments are valid and clear. Informative. I will answer your question on new vlog I'm working on. hope all is well with you. =D
One more thing, it's not about being able to hear the sounds. It's about language deprivation which is our # 1 big problem. In California, many children with CIs failed their HS Exit Exam (to acquire HS diploma) 90% failed! what's wrong? Its becuz people like you were told to hinder Deaf children's possible foundation to strengthen English by not using sign language. that violates their natural birthright to communicate.
@aguabo : I can't say I have heard about anyone being placed in mental institutions after CI here in Norway, if I understand correctly, most kids indicated get CI these days, so if there was a large degree of problems, and that these caused institutionalization, it would be rather well known...
I believe a similar approach to the traditional deaf schooling is advised for CI children, so sign language, lip reading and so on is still advisable, the CI is an aid not a magic solution.
@tr41 Hv u seen my another vlog on Hoax? The studies I found r contradicted w/ ur statement. They proved CIs do not help to restore normal hearing sound, concluded on slow processing, word recognition in young children while acquiring the language. what best work is, Organic CURE for Deafness. u from norway? Can u find out if its true that children w/ failed CIs r placed in Mental institution?
Yes, namely one like MSM, CBS and Good Morning America who said Baby Jonathan got a miracle, have you seen that vlog? Agree with you, CI is just a tool like hearing aid. Someone took the big grants on LT efficacy vs effectiveness of CIs in children. Have you read Dr. David Pisoni's great conclusive reports. Many scientists loose interest on manufacturing CIs, they go for Stem Cell, you knew?
Maybe some deaf set in their ways and might be hard to learn to speak verbal and it is understandable that some choose not to get CI. But to me to be alert to sound would be a safer life and not to get one for that reason alone is stupid. Like someone prowling around you or a oncoming injury and someone could yell "watch out!"
@YourLastViewer You overprotective of Deaf people? thanks for your concern. What abt others who wear iPODs? Turn their blasting radio on? They too cldn't hear someone prowling around or yelling. We cant control law of gravity. I can verify u Deaf ppl r more aware of surroundings. They rely on eyes. It is reported they r better drivers, low percentage of accidents. I sometimes wear hearing aid. My service dog helps w/ name calls, cook timer, knocks, my life has been great! Nothing more I want.
I understand your point about "body ownership" for that reason I oppose routine infant circumcision. However, if it were my child, I would do whatever possible to help him hear, and as early as possible. I can hear, I LOVE music, the theatre arts, laughter, crickets, ocean waves, all of that, and the thought of my child missing out on sound doesn't sit well with me. Even if there is only a 5% chance of success - I'd take that, as long as it's SAFE, you have nothing to lose!
@MsThunderstone I can hear those with my hearing aid, it would work just fine. Have you read Dr. Pisoni's studies on Exective Functioning and that CIs are not effective?
Checked the link and it clearly explains that CI won't work for a subset of candidates suffering from some specific diseases which damage the hearing nerves. Since CI is just a bypass between the ear and these nerves, It can't help if the nerves themselves are damaged.
I try to relate this with you but I can't. I think you grew up hearing things & if you became latened Deaf, then you might go panic. However you can choose to wear Digital Hearing Aid or CI. My uncle has been Deaf for almost 5 yrs. When I discussed hearing devices w/ him,
he won't consider them. He likes being Deaf, so sincere and peaceful. If he wants to hear something then he'd turn tv volume up or wear amplified headphones. I can't force him but parents do put forcible implants in Deaf babies, not right. Do you rather to be fully informed of risks, give consent to medical than being uninformed and your rights being taken away?
Funny how you consider yourself a "Master" researcher by using Wikipedia as a source for some of the facts.
I'm sick of deaf people hating on people who gets CI. If you were born blind or become blind all of sudden at a young age...would you want to get your vision restored the same way deaf people get CI?
Are you CI user? I am Deaf and I don't hate you or any people WHO DECIDE to get CIs, same idea as tatoo... People choose to get it, based on their own autonomy. I support individual's rights to full informed choices. Get your records straight por favor.
This is my second area that I have pertaining to the sources. Have you gone to the hospital library to conduct research on cochlear implant issues? For instance, have you seen journals like Arch Otolaryngology Head Neck Surgery, Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics? Those are examples of very good journals, who have been written by the professionals and researchers. I hope you will use them. Thank you. Good luck with your research.
I have been perplexed and confused with your wording of "success rate". What kinds of success rate are you referring to? Is it related to the surgery itself? Is it related to the cochlear implant devices? Is it related to the sounds that the CI patient hears? Is it related to the language development? What are you referring to as success rate? Could you please clarify? Thank you.
Yeah true.. the children's body not parents.. their decsions not parent.. im so happy my parent learned sign lanauage well and learned my curltre.. thats mean they show a true love to a child..
@TheRoseOak Why can't a parent do both? Learn sign language AND try to help their child hear? Trying to share sound with your child is somehow wrong? Give me a break!!! I had a deaf boyfriend, I learned to sign some from him, we are still friends. He has hearing aides - is that somehow wrong in your opinion? Would you disagree with a child having a surgery to SEE?
Wow, it impacts on me very powerful. It's scary. I think as if I'm in Germany prior to and during the WWII. Isn't it illegal not to provide full information to parents of deaf children? Maybe they also hide the fact that some deaf babies were murdered? If so, it's as if we are guinea pigs for their experiment? It's like they look not just down on us, but down down down on us.
@Salticid68 The Nazis killed anyone who they thought had a disability, wasn't the right race, or was poor. They were evil incarnate! This isn't the attitude of loving parents who want the best for their child. Even a small chance at hearing is worth it. Would you recommend parents let their baby stay blind rather than try giving them a chance to see? How sad would that be!
wikipedia is not a reliable source of information, I am in graduate school and my teachers always tell me this. Have you tried contacting a CI surgeon for statistics?
If you truly had research skills, you would have made the effort to investigate the context in which the "low success rate" claim was made. Even the half-assed Google listing states a low success rate "with these people" - at this point you're supposed to ask yourself, "what kind of people?" then make the effort to read the full context in which it was made. If you actually read the page you would see that it specifically refers to people with *acoustic neuromas*, not all types of deafness.
FDA jobs to take care of the problems not successful. CIs have no problems which are good and safe. CIs have been approved by FDA to sell in the American. Any unsafe drugs, lens, CIs will report it to FDA to off the market. FDA is protection American to prevent get injury or kill from unsafe prescription, lens, etc. Lot federal governments are looking the problems. Her researcher is not immaterial. FDA is not responsible which the CI name of company is very successful rate and recommend.

I watched this video and read the comments and feel bad there are so many confused people out there. Cochlear implants are very successful and many people are candidates. You don't know for sure unless you go to a Implant clinic to see if your a candidate. My 9 year old daughter is mainstreamed in third grade and extremely successful. Everyone has to figure out if it is right for them but to make such negative comments about something you don't know much about is crazy. Look at the CI websites.
What is construed as a success can be very subjective. I know of one CI person who is very happy with the results and can use the phone for the first time (limited to family members ie. recognizable voices). Another I know of says she might hear more "noise" but it is nothing to crow about as she still relies on lipreading and visual cues. If you google "Cochlear Implants Stories" you will find some stories and you be the judge. By the way I'm deaf, use ASL, lip read and use hearing aids.
Ido not know why people do not like ASL?ASL IS designed by NATURE. Thank you for your hard work on research about CI....low success...oh dear! We deaf people knew it something fishy they people like doctors, professors, ride on high horse!!!!!
If you want to know the statistics on the cochlear implant talk to those who have them. These other websites written by people who have them. So they have no idea what it's like. Go to CochlearAmericas site, advanced bionics site. Read what they have to say. They'd know because they "are" the statistics. You can add me to the list of successful with it. I love mine. In fact I wouldn't have gotten mine if I didn't find many others who are happy with theirs. The statistics are out there.
I can't say that I relate to any of you because my CI is wonderful. I am 15, got it when I was 6 in 2000. I really recommend that you give your CI time because you need to be patient while you get used to it, otherwise you will never get used to it and won't wear it, which means it won't work. Its like getting a plastic knee, you need to do excersizes with it for the muscle to grow over the knee so you can use it. If you just lay around in pain, its not going to get you anywhere.
@emele7 All lizichell said was how the cochlear works (or doesn't if the nerve dies). Your "how u dare say that" comment shows how much we rely on hearing to communicate properly, since you clearly did not comprehend what was said. It's too bad that your cochlear implants didn't work for you, but it WAS worth a shot, just ask any person who has benefitted from the implants!
Cochlear implants are recommended for people who have profound to total deafness that occurs in the stereocillia of the cochlea so long as the auditory nerve itself is functional.
In normal hearing function, the stereocillia bend in response to sound vibrations in the fluid of the cochlear. This bending triggers an electrochemical pulse which travels to the brain via the auditory nerve.
When they die due to sensorineural deafness, they no longer transmit electrical signals.
Thossler1...thanks for the info about Dr Pisoni and what he said...wonder how many people doesn't realize that there's hardly any statistic on the success rate with CI...they are hiding something, from what it sounds like...wished there's some statistics on this...to help parents decide if their babies/children should risk their lives! It ain't right... please help spread the word around, thanks! Have a happy holiday!
I'm reading a ton of these comments and it makes me laugh. The surgery has a VERY HIGH success rate and why do i say this, because there generally are no complications after the surgery or during the surgery. Most complication are because of infection which is not the fault of the surgeon. And secondly if you want to find stats you have to look at a research journal not at an info site that is bent on selling a product. The FDA approves this because it doesn't have proven negative side effects.
Probably the reason the FDA has no success rate statistics is that there is not definition of what a "cochlear implant success" really is. From a medical/pathological point of view it simply means that the technology was implanted and the surgery itself was successful. It has nothing to do with the real life result. That can't be measured until years later and no one follows up. Why should they? They got their $60,000.
Its a pain to try making a valid point that CI's don't help and being a victim.. even if any individual had implants when they were a baby and raised by overprotective parents who believed all the lies that CI's help restore hearing back to normal. Low sucess rates happen, and constantly the cover up. To prevent a malpractice lawsuit? OF COURSE! AGBELL is a QUACK!!! so are all the CI doctors as GODS to implant CI's on babies and children without consent destroying their childhood!!! AUDIST GODS!
Hearing aids are often the same; hearing aids companies pay for studies to prove they make things better, but often the data show that hearing aids don't help as much as they say, that sometimes they don't even help, and that people with HA do get hired and paid more, but there's little correlation with how they actually help for speech. And even there there's a dearth of research done. And like some "CI numbers" they don't make the difference between late deaf and other.
Thats brilliant truth. Its enough prove my parent who focus mw to wear CI.. I'm Against CI because its not help me learn how to speak. MY Doctor has promsie me that its help me learn how to speak.. but its not. someone cant fool around me!!
ive made video myself you can check this out
its talk about my ture story about CI.. Hope you will understand my sign because ive use BSL
You should know that Wikipedia is an open source encyclopedia. Any yahoo can make an article or amend an article. Then other yahoos decide whether the changes are accurate. Google simply cached an article that someone else deemed not to have accurate information. Accurate information should also accompany references to the source of that information. Likely the "low success rate" comment did not have referenced proof.
For what it's worth though, I am on your side of the overall argument.
O shea myths of otology paper is good .... he saids that they have to get rid of practice that is harmful to patients but lucrative to their businesses...... he concludes that their is serious myths in otology that have no scientific foundation... keep going I love you I am an unnecessarily deafened and otologically surgically handicapped child....
those corrupt surgeons cannot hide from the truth forever.... keep going ... and please feed your bottle to a baby in an upright position .... if the milk drains into the eustachian tube because you fed them in a laying down position do not worry the infection is only transient.... whatever you do .... do not cut out their ears the ENT has a self interest in profit
The FDA is only required to test "efficacy". (Does the implant work/.function. ) It is not required to prove "effectiveness". (What are the outcomes and benefits of the implant?) This is according to Dr. Pisoni who works with the cochlear implant team at Indiana University. He was a keynote presenter at the AGBell Symposium for Listening and Spoken Language in St. Louis this past July.
He stated that there are huge variations in outcomes and benefits that are not studied or reported.
Thank you so much for this vlog. I am not a parent of a deaf child, I am actually a late-deafened adult who has been deemed a candidate for a CI. My surgery is scheduled for next Thursday and I have been searching for information about the "success" rate. I have been to many of the sites you mentioned and did not find any data. Much like you I have been trained to research and am actually pursuing my degree in rehabilitation counseling.
And I never subscribe your videos, never did... It's not nice when someone fabricates about something like what you stated in your last comment. Thank you.
Melonylund, you got it all wrong. The reason I approved your comments because I am going to let those advocates to read and leave you their replied comments. Please get your myths and facts straight, weblink:
You call yourself a researcher, when what you are doing is simply not telling the truth, which is this, if you would like to take another read of wikipedia the part that you referred to actually is referring to acoustic neuromas and actually says "implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with "these people" as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along.'
My daughter now hears at 10 to 20 decibels which is well within the "normal" hearing range. She will be the first to tell you how much she loves her cochlear implants, how much she loves music, hearing the birds sing, talking with her friends, she loves the sound of rain on the roof, the rustle of the leaves in the wind and the squish of the snow under her boots.
melonylund, we've heard that similar line many times from distracted, disoriented, dejected hearing parents of beautiful deaf children. You're speaking proudly for your own child which is understandable, but we know the common problems behind your curtain. When your kid grows up into frustration personally, socially and educationally, feel free to come back here to share your heartbreaking story. Good luck!
@LagunaZurfer The only way your child any child deaf or not grows up feeling of these thing is because the did not get the love and confirmation, that they are worthy indivuals, who are similar and diffrent then everyone around them, and that they are to be proud of the fact that they are different, because that is how god made us. What I don't understand is this, why are so many of ya'll bashing a ci, but ya'll wear hearing aids?
Bashing someone with a CI is wrong. Our #1 concern is language deprivation. When the child struggles to succeed in higher education but is told not to sign. Red flag... That hinders his/her ability to acquire the languages in both ASL and English. 90% Deaf children and with CIs, fail their HS Exit Exam. We need your help to fix this problem by optimizing all opportunies especially ASL..
Wearing CI is all about your individual choice, same idea as tatoo or putting ID chip in.
@melonylund, since you are such a dedicated parent, you should know that you can do even more for your daughter. As a family, you can all learn ASL. You can introduce your daughter to other Deaf people. You can get to know the Deaf community. Then you will have given your daughter something much more important than the sound of rain on the roof: a strong cultural identity, bilingualism, pride in who she is. It's a win-win for everybody, including you. Blessings!
Perfect. Totally agree. Any kid would be thankful to be bilingual in today's society anyway. It enriches their lives to be exposed to different cultures and languages and peoples. How can some be so against ASL? Maybe people should educate themselves first before bending to the will of others who tell them something is so. But no, lets just try to "fix the problem" *rolling eyes*
I am aware of the feeling of "some" of the deaf community against CIs. My husband and I love our daughter more than life itself, which is why she is implanted, you want to question my parenting abilities, at least my daughter will not be selling sign language cards for donations like some deaf people who did not have the chance for a CI or better education at the time and yes I know not all deaf people have had to do that to make money as I have a deaf uncle who had a regular job.
My deaf friend works for NASA as a space engineer (now works over 10 years with them). He uses ASL and, of course, is non-ci client. I do have many deaf friends who work as a professional, including manager positions, lawyers, and stuff like that. In fact, none of them are using ci.
Also....it is safe for me to say it is VERY RARE to meet a deaf person who sells the sign language card. I happened to meet them twice in my lifetime. Even I once told them I do know how to use ASL, and you know you can find a better job than this one.
You subscribed to my daughters video. I was initially impressed at the amount of education you have; however, after listening to you I wonder if that's a lie too? I have kept my mouth shut on numerous occasions when people who are deaf and use sign language as their only means of communication seem to be the "only" people who have the nerve to judge what I have had done to correct my Childs disability. Yes I said "disability".
Bricker, again, this is the same troll who likes to promote more hatred messages. Do you have something better to do than bashing at us? I have no intention to challenge you, but I stick to my guns. Wait a minute, don't get wrong idea about "guns". "Stick to my guns" means that I stand up for my beliefs. I deleted and blocked your name.
GeekChic, I deleted your comment because you are promoting hatred message. This is the same troll I watch everywhere you go so I block your another name. Sowwy. =/
Um basically, if you read the whole wikipedia site, you will know that it says, "Implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with these people as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along."
Which means, anyone with a healthy nerve can have a success rate. Learn to read.
Um, basically, if you read from another side, you will know that wikipedia can be edited, deleted or added on. Which means someone edited that information after I uploaded the video.
So you be the one to learn how to access via wiki online, feel free to log in and click "edit". Therefore I stick to my words "I am still at nowhere with no proofs" I never stated that all findings are based on wiki's. Again, learn to watch my signing or reading subtitle carefully. Thank you =D
I am a Cochlear Implant user and have been for 16 years. I got it when i was 5 years old and can communicate well with hearing people. I went to a mainstreamed high school with no other deaf people and had no problem with it.
This video makes me angry. Honestly, just because they didn't report on the percantage of success in CI users does not mean that they are trying to hide something. In my experience, the rate of success is higher the younger you get it. The more you practice WITH the Cochlear Implant and the more you go to speech therapy, your rate of success will be higher.
i dont know why it did not go thru, my comment i mean so i repeat. i worked as a teacher in public school settings and see rating of kids having CI has skyrocketed. But their failing rating also has skyrocketed as well. fda has approved doctors drilling ci in kids' skulls without statistics? then something is really wrong, we will have to form a protest in dc area one of these days otherwise deaf kids suffer psychologically due to identity issues and FAILING issues! writin a book with me!!!
I really think it is pathetic that doctors have to CI kids without proper procedures approved by FDA. If FDA does approve then why the heck did we go ahead with it? Approval without having to researches and do statistics? WHAT?! We need to do something about it! I worked as a teacher in public school settings and had dealt with CI kids and do see many of them failing in mainstreaming classes! With CI, they never will be HEARING. PERIOD. They failed!
I too am deaf and never brought into the idea of Cochlear Implants. The FDA is a corrupt organization and you don't have to go too far down the rabbit hole to realize just how bad the problem is regarding their disclosure of information.
The FDA opposes naturalistic medicine, opposes vitamins, opposes organic foods, opposes facts that reflect badly on their interests, which are usually business interests. Those facts alone should raise red flags about the honesty of the FDA.
The doctors did tell them before cochlear implant that long term deaf will not help with cochlear implants, only who is 15 years old or younger that will be possible able to hear again.
jjtopsy, see my replied comment to deafmutearthur RE: "success rate" ....
You are correct , FDA deals with only reported problems... The reason I presented this vlog because someone at DVTV made repetitious statements that FDA has the stats, data, success rate. Clearly that person wasn't making any truthful message. That was not nice.
;)Thank you so much for showing the fact that I m not really surprised it at all because I knew it from the bottom of my heart from the beginning. I fought all the way and most of my comments were removed by their bunches of lies.I had researched on CI issues however they blocked me from going in there deeply. I find this is 258 they can do this to me. Also they removed everything that I found the evidences in the past that is too bad it s gone already. How cruel they bashed me for ten years.
:) Thank you so much for showing your fact of not having those success rate of CI stats as far as i knew from the bottom of my heart. So therefore, I am not really surprised to hear this message from you. :) Now you can see I am very against hearing devices because there is very cruel to destroy our true identity and spiritual. We are deaf as is, no matter what you like it or not. Face the Deaf Reality! NO more child abuses toward Deaf babies/children. STOP AUDISM as well. No more hurting kids.
My granddaughter has 2 CIs. My son is deaf. He didn't even know she got the second one. She hate it. She also hates being forced to wear them when she is with her deaf father. But a judge has ordered that they must be left on except for sleeping, bathing, swimming or wearing a helmet. If my deaf son doesn't force her to wear them he can be found in contempt of court.
I think the question is how do we define success? Is it language (verbal/written) acquisition or is it a more subjective measure of happiness/fulfillment? There has been research published recently on children implanted prior to the age of three and their language scores when they enter school compared with hearing children of the same age which does seem to suggest a closing of the gap but it that the measure we want to use? I don't know.
It should be noted that the "low success rate" link needs to be read in entirety. What the entire statement said, which was omitted in this broadcast was actually:
For example, some patients suffer from deafness medial to the cochlea - typically acoustic neuromas. Implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with these people as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along.
Candidacy is key to successful implantation. Do more research and get correct facts!
I am floored, amazed and justified in my concerns about statistics on cochlear implants. I come from Ontario, a province in Canada that sees a staggering percentage for Deaf children under the age of 5 being implanted under the Universal health care.
I taught Deaf Children for 27 years and I had 2 students with cochlear implants.
None made time for weekly sessions to
continue speech and auditory training. Speaking of your Internet findings on the success rate of CI children...Wikipedia does not give accurate facts. As an itinerant teacher in a regular program, I have been advised to avoid this website because anyone can change responses on Wikipedia. Thanks for sharing thoughts on CI.
Aguabo,, here in Holland where I live, there is a waiting list a few miles long for CI.. even one child was born with an mild swelling of the brain, and the doctors decided for the parents to go ahead and have a CI implanted NOW rather than wait.. the child was 3 mos old ,, the child still has alot of growing to do,, and will OUT grow that device,, Keep working towards your goal,BTW there are no stats here in Holland either
thanks for sharing the video. I have been wondering if there is any results since a first group of deaf children volunteered to have Cochlear Implant (maybe 20 years ago). They were like human Guinea Pigs. I know one person who was in the group, no longer use it.
wish I could copy this on disc so I can show around to various agencies IE my presentation on CI will be on this coming Thursday to town Hall -(task force on Disability)
Hi, would you mind putting captions on this video? My Deaf friend send me this, but my ASL is not great and I can't understand everything you are saying. There is an option on youtube where you can post little "text bubbles" over your video, it's really easy. And I think you'd open up your discussion to reach more people. Thanks...
poetryofsound, sorry my bad. I should have provided an instruction at first place. You may click the shown icon of arrow on right bottom corner of video and click "cc" to watch this video in English subtitle. It is so that you are learning ASL! Mucho gracias =D
Being prelingually deaf at birth and user of HA since 3 mos, HA didn't do much for me. I had to work hard with hours and years of therapy to speak and lipread well. Getting CI at age 40, I hear thousand of sounds that it's way too overwhelming, I had to stop using CI. Now looking back, If I had CI at young age, it would make my job much easier to adjust sounds and know what sounds to speak. I wouldn't spent too much time in speech therapy and have more time to go out and be a kid!
Thanks anne, same thing happened to me. I was born hearing & became singer w/ big voice. I lost my hearing completely at age 2. After 6 long months of recovery, I had to learn everything all over again, potty training, eating, walking, etc. My parents thgt I might remember how to sing again but didn't. I attended children's hospital for AVT, 3 years yet I learned nothing not even on how to speak one word. On my 5th bday, I learned ASL within 1-3 months, I caught up. That was my best b-day gift!
Dr. Pisoni said the benefits, success and failures does vary. Do not go too far until everyone is fully informed and that each person is entitled to making a consent. Our US constitution clearly point out our individual rights..... shall not deprive one's life, liberty and property. thank you
Dodiellis..It's really hard to say. With children, there's no way of knowing what actually sounds they hear because they don't know what anything suppose to sound like. CI is not meant to hear normal sound or restore hearing. It won't be natural sounds.Talking to few CI who lost their deafness late, some say it sounds like mono computer speakers(past CI devices) or stereo speakers(current CI devices). They say CI is many time better than HA.
anne and dodiells, have you watched Dr. David Pisoni's speech? He confirmed that there are 8 CI skeletons (hidden facts), With CI it is difficult to discriminate and identify different speakers' voices, hard to understand unfamiliar voices/dialect perception. also would not work well with sensory motors skills, very difficult. I would rather to let the Deaf child grow up in a safe place using bi-lingual skills. I recommend Dr. Steve Nover's notes on "from wrong way to right way" & John Edgbert.
Yes back then there were cons of can't do scuba diving, skydiving, etc. Now it's possible to do it. The CI devices training have gotten better for the past four years. There are strict protocols to lessen the risks and disadvantages. Before considering CI, chose your surgeons carefully! They can do more harm than the CI device itself. Not only that, sometimes the patients didn't follow the instructions. Something to think about. There are too many factors why it failed or succeed in the past.
anne, when making a decision on reception of CI, it still involves great risks. it is a part of brain surgery. Regardless of this, like you & other adults who are able to consider the benefits/risks, make sure each individual is 100% informed & make consent. I support everyone's freedom of choices. I dont support taking the body of ownership & consent away that involves w/ force.
Statistics are hard to report because CI companies have come and gone. Yes, there were failed CI devices, bad companies and bad surgeons! You have to question people who had bad experiences which brand they used and what happened in details. They have gotten better with their CI devices and trainings for CI implantation for the past five years. There are only 2 CI companies in USA, I won't say who but three years ago, one had more failures, other has more successes. Statistics change all the time
to be continued from above. My friend died from severe reaction to using CI as foreign object in her brain, got it when she was little. Another 6 yrs old boy doesn't hv great equilibrium after got implanted. His CIs r all updated & brand new. Thinking if he was given with the choice and make his own consent, he would have said no.
Nice reporting job and telling us where you found your "facts". And congrats on your hard work completing your MBS!
Note that, Wikipedia is not always valid as for a source of information. So If wiki says it's a low success rate who is the author? That would be my question. I anybody can edit a wiki page.
My parents asked me if I want CI when I was really young, Thank god I said NO WAY!! CI has no directional audio capabilities. But technology is getting better and better sadly.
Apparently, there are growing number of CI patients who are successful candidates and even the government is sponsoring them on the CI program. The CI program is suitable for CI patients who are part of hearing culture in their lives. If CI patient is not a successful candidate, can continue to be deaf active member of the deaf community. On the other hand, SOME of CI patients are doing well, and others don't.
funmoon, would you want our taxpayers to fund each Deaf child worth $1 million if his/her CI indicates poor performance? Dr. Pisoni from Indiana University just made a report that CIs are not helpful for everyone. He said that CI does not restore everyone's normal hearing sounds. Putting CIs in young children must be discouraged unless they are grown up, be informed based on consent and decision-making. they have their own individual rights to ownership. no one ever takes that from them.
From FDA website: The FDA regulates manufacturers of cochlear implants. For manufacturers to sell cochlear implants in the United States, they must first show the FDA that their implants are safe and effective.
So my question.. why aren't there any statistics. This seems barbaric.
I also once researched about Pros and Cons: Cochlear Implants. I somehow retrieved the information from House Ear, Inc back in 1995 that CI cannot go to scuba diving, sky diving, or using curl iron. That was on the Cons side that caught my attention.
It is too often the parents don't take a time to do the research, etc.
ScubaSilentWizard, can u please email me w/ your findings? I understand it was in 1995 which might be outdated but I'd like to collect everyone's findings. I read somewhere that a woman who got CI malfunctioned after thunderlight attacked her home area, got shocked thru cooking bread in toaster. Also DeafMilitant's pal just had his CI surgically removed. That way he would be safe to undergo MRI exam. Some said technicians can alter MRI to accomodate patient who has metal inside the body, true?
Yes, it is a wonder .. same here in Sweden as there is no fact of how many children with CI is that in the exposed group.
These children are going to cases from the usual "test" and throws CI or begins to be deaf, because no one can find. It can say that they are hidden in society.
TheStralie, that really hurts. I do not like how they make money off our bodies. Use us 4 their experiement purpose. This isn't right. We do hv our questions answer. NIH & CDC announced that FDA uses "Efficacy" to approve CIs. Does the CI itself work, they answered "Yes". However FDA doesnt require CI companies to prove "Effectiveness" of implant. Does CI work effectively for all children, they confirmed and said "NO". I have been working w/ young adults who use CIs-they are delayed, emotional.
I fully understand your expectations. I did also for 20 years ago and I was really frustrated then. It feels totally powerless when someone knew too much. But it is unfortunately not able to get money for such a research around the affected children as well.
I often get such an argument by the CI team or similar to it is comparison with glasses, so one can not reject a successful medium for those who want to hear. But it's not right that they thought, for it is an operation on the baby. But the baby does not use glasses then!

I pray one strong child( with ci survivor can bring up the action.)
gwenxion 11 months ago
So I ask you .... everywhere I read many information : with blue highlight says FDA APPROVED. what is it.? So I checked FDA information with CI no exist and also Warning risk etc on FDA. I asked for statistics for Ci .. There is none. I knew something wrong is Fishy !
gwenxion 11 months ago
@gwenxion exactly, same thing with my findings. FDA do list many different risks and I received emails from all who have CIs starting at young, they experience mild to severe side effects. Common thing I see is seizure.

I wear cochlear implants and am smart enough to know that a child implanted at a early age will have much better experience than someone who waited until later in life. I was lucky to have lost my hearing over time, but totally understand why so many people are against it..... but have the truly been informed?
phaze101200oo 1 year ago
@phaze101200oo I am not against you like many others do. did you experience any side effect?
aguabo 11 months ago

@69DJGENY69
Tampoco informan los efectos secundarios y la realidad del asunto es q si los padres kieren un nene oyente no se puede puesto que con o sin el implante siempre seran sordos. Me da gusto que a ud le funcione el implante
nanzilu 11 months ago
I there are stories both of success and of failure, the same with everything. If it works for one person it may not work for another. What I don't like, is when the hospitals who sell the implants aren't informing the parents about sign language, Deaf culture, or exposing them to any Deaf adults. They only tell them that their child will be "normal" "successful" with the implant. They do not talk to the parents about Deaf is "normal" and MANY successfull Deaf people! Hospitals are for profit.
fairysign1 1 year ago 7
@fairysign1 True, what normalcy are they trying to determine about us? very subjective. I have no problem with Deaf adults who want CI because they take self-charge of their own life by doing research, learning about risks/coverage of insurance and signing off medical consent themselves. Children cannot do these, it's better to wait til they are adults. I received conculsive research that CIs do not help to restore normal hearing sounds. I hate moneymongers and fearmongers.

Why not start a Phd thesis about it? Go ahead! Good luck! ;-)

C.I. is illegal and dangerous, period.

Implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with these people, as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along."
arntjay 1 year ago
Also, please understand that there are statistics abounding when it comes to cochlear implants. The problem in achieving an overall 'success rate' is that there are many different kinds of people who receive implants and for different reasons. You may have a deaf-from-birth 50-year-old who just wants the implant to hear her alarm. If she can hear the alarm but not understand speech, is that considered a success?
But ultimately, your opinion of CIs is your own opinion. I'm just trying to clarify

hi, aguabo
all about CI is your opinion and I respect it. but you talk like if parents don't think over about CI, if this is new for them, obviously, they (at least, a great part of them) research about CI over and over again, talk w/ CI users, etc.

Well that depends on the level of hearing loss.

...although I would be a little suspicious of anyone who wants to sell you FOUR hearing aids, two for just in case.

Implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with these people, as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along." The "low success rate" in the wiki page is referring to candidates with an additional and specific medical condition.
websterbud 1 year ago 3
I think first before you even start your research you needed to define what "success" is. I also really need to point out that wikipedia is not a reliable source of information. If people want to know the statistics on the cochlear implant they should be talking to those who have them.
websterbud 1 year ago
I'm a grad student in Early Oral Intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. I did the same search as you and was indeed surprised to see that wikipedia had something about a "low success rate". However, upon further inquiry, I saw that the low success rate referred to individuals with an acoustic neuroma. Because a CI stimulates the auditory nerve directly, people with a damaged nerve won't benefit from a CI like others. It's important to look at the reason behind the facts.
kkmarue 1 year ago 40
@kkmarue
Not only in Wikipedia discussed that part. It was linked to "HearAgain" website which said the same thing, it is not reliable source but my question is... Why would someone get a chance to edit and remove that language. It is all about controversial topic. I have researched that Dr. David Pisoni from Indiana Unviersity who announced that "CIs do not help to restore normal hearing sounds"
aguabo 1 year ago
@kkmarue Part 2
aguabo 1 year ago
@aguabo My dad was fluent in ASL and spent a lot of time teaching me to finger spell... but i'm nowhere near proficient. My focus has been on working with kids with hearing aids and cochlear implants. My cousin, though (who is hearing) used Baby Sign and i can definitely see that it helped her before she learned to speak to communicate with her mom! Asking for "more milk" instead of crying is DEFINITELY preferable!
And thanks for the good wishes!
kkmarue 1 year ago
@kkmarue Agree, Signing helps babies & parents big time. Their vocal cords dont develop 'til abt age 3 & it wld be fully developed by age 7? We need to expose them to many words. Language deprivation is #1 big pblm in Deaf children. You keep eyes on those lil kids who can't learn how to speak, plz make parents learn signing right away. I am sorry about your dad, was he Deaf?
aguabo 1 year ago

@tr41
I mean the mental institution in Netherlands?
One more thing, it's not about being able to hear the sounds. It's about language deprivation which is our # 1 big problem. In California, many children with CIs failed their HS Exit Exam (to acquire HS diploma) 90% failed! what's wrong? Its becuz people like you were told to hinder Deaf children's possible foundation to strengthen English by not using sign language. that violates their natural birthright to communicate.
aguabo 1 year ago

@aguabo has anyone claimed that implants are a cure for profound deafness?
implants are a tool...that is all
and as technology improves...so will the implants
im curious...have you applied for a grant to study the long term efficacy of implants?
you should
brabon1 1 year ago
@brabon1
Many scientists loose interest on manufacturing CIs, they go for Stem Cell, you knew?
aguabo 1 year ago
Maybe some deaf set in their ways and might be hard to learn to speak verbal and it is understandable that some choose not to get CI. But to me to be alert to sound would be a safer life and not to get one for that reason alone is stupid. Like someone prowling around you or a oncoming injury and someone could yell "watch out!"
YourLastViewer 1 year ago
@YourLastViewer You overprotective of Deaf people? thanks for your concern. What abt others who wear iPODs? Turn their blasting radio on? They too cldn't hear someone prowling around or yelling. We cant control law of gravity. I can verify u Deaf ppl r more aware of surroundings. They rely on eyes. It is reported they r better drivers, low percentage of accidents. I sometimes wear hearing aid. My service dog helps w/ name calls, cook timer, knocks, my life has been great! Nothing more I want.
aguabo 1 year ago
I understand your point about "body ownership" for that reason I oppose routine infant circumcision. However, if it were my child, I would do whatever possible to help him hear, and as early as possible. I can hear, I LOVE music, the theatre arts, laughter, crickets, ocean waves, all of that, and the thought of my child missing out on sound doesn't sit well with me. Even if there is only a 5% chance of success - I'd take that, as long as it's SAFE, you have nothing to lose!
MsThunderstone 1 year ago
@MsThunderstone I can hear those with my hearing aid, it would work just fine. Have you read Dr. Pisoni's studies on Exective Functioning and that CIs are not effective?

@MsThunderstone One more thing, you are saying it is SAFE to have your child's cochlear hair removed? Think about it.
aguabo 1 year ago
Checked the link and it clearly explains that CI won't work for a subset of candidates suffering from some specific diseases which damage the hearing nerves. Since CI is just a bypass between the ear and these nerves, It can't help if the nerves themselves are damaged.

he won't consider them.

TheRoseOak 1 year ago
@TheRoseOak Why can't a parent do both? Learn sign language AND try to help their child hear? Trying to share sound with your child is somehow wrong? Give me a break!!! I had a deaf boyfriend, I learned to sign some from him, we are still friends. He has hearing aides - is that somehow wrong in your opinion? Would you disagree with a child having a surgery to SEE?
MsThunderstone 1 year ago
Wow, it impacts on me very powerful. It's scary. I think as if I'm in Germany prior to and during the WWII. Isn't it illegal not to provide full information to parents of deaf children? Maybe they also hide the fact that some deaf babies were murdered? If so, it's as if we are guinea pigs for their experiment? It's like they look not just down on us, but down down down on us.
Salticid68 1 year ago
@Salticid68 The Nazis killed anyone who they thought had a disability, wasn't the right race, or was poor. They were evil incarnate! This isn't the attitude of loving parents who want the best for their child. Even a small chance at hearing is worth it. Would you recommend parents let their baby stay blind rather than try giving them a chance to see? How sad would that be!
MsThunderstone 1 year ago
wikipedia is not a reliable source of information, I am in graduate school and my teachers always tell me this. Have you tried contacting a CI surgeon for statistics?
rabidmongoose51 1 year ago
If you truly had research skills, you would have made the effort to investigate the context in which the "low success rate" claim was made. Even the half-assed Google listing states a low success rate "with these people" - at this point you're supposed to ask yourself, "what kind of people?" then make the effort to read the full context in which it was made. If you actually read the page you would see that it specifically refers to people with *acoustic neuromas*, not all types of deafness.

Look at the CI websites.
christopherobbyn 1 year ago
What is construed as a success can be very subjective. I know of one CI person who is very happy with the results and can use the phone for the first time (limited to family members ie. recognizable voices). Another I know of says she might hear more "noise" but it is nothing to crow about as she still relies on lipreading and visual cues. If you google "Cochlear Implants Stories" you will find some stories and you be the judge. By the way I'm deaf, use ASL, lip read and use hearing aids.

If you just lay around in pain, its not going to get you anywhere.

to lizchell, im deaf and ci never worked for me and i got it out recently! how u dare say that.
emele7 2 years ago
@emele7 All lizichell said was how the cochlear works (or doesn't if the nerve dies). Your "how u dare say that" comment shows how much we rely on hearing to communicate properly, since you clearly did not comprehend what was said. It's too bad that your cochlear implants didn't work for you, but it WAS worth a shot, just ask any person who has benefitted from the implants!
MsThunderstone 1 year ago
Cochlear implants are recommended for people who have profound to total deafness that occurs in the stereocillia of the cochlea so long as the auditory nerve itself is functional.
In normal hearing function, the stereocillia bend in response to sound vibrations in the fluid of the cochlear. This bending triggers an electrochemical pulse which travels to the brain via the auditory nerve.
When they die due to sensorineural deafness, they no longer transmit electrical signals.
lizichell 2 years ago
There are two basic forms of deafness. There's nerve deafness and mechanical deafness. Cochlear implant will not help with nerve deafness.
But they will work for people like me with mechanical deafness.

It ain't right... please help spread the word around, thanks! Have a happy holiday!
DeafPoet2 2 years ago
I'm reading a ton of these comments and it makes me laugh. The surgery has a VERY HIGH success rate and why do i say this, because there generally are no complications after the surgery or during the surgery. Most complication are because of infection which is not the fault of the surgeon. And secondly if you want to find stats you have to look at a research journal not at an info site that is bent on selling a product. The FDA approves this because it doesn't have proven negative side effects.
patricksandwich 2 years ago
Probably the reason the FDA has no success rate statistics is that there is not definition of what a "cochlear implant success" really is. From a medical/pathological point of view it simply means that the technology was implanted and the surgery itself was successful. It has nothing to do with the real life result. That can't be measured until years later and no one follows up. Why should they? They got their $60,000.
suzannebenfield 2 years ago
Its a pain to try making a valid point that CI's don't help and being a victim.. even if any individual had implants when they were a baby and raised by overprotective parents who believed all the lies that CI's help restore hearing back to normal. Low sucess rates happen, and constantly the cover up. To prevent a malpractice lawsuit? OF COURSE! AGBELL is a QUACK!!! so are all the CI doctors as GODS to implant CI's on babies and children without consent destroying their childhood!!! AUDIST GODS!
Bunjer 2 years ago
Hearing aids are often the same; hearing aids companies pay for studies to prove they make things better, but often the data show that hearing aids don't help as much as they say, that sometimes they don't even help, and that people with HA do get hired and paid more, but there's little correlation with how they actually help for speech. And even there there's a dearth of research done. And like some "CI numbers" they don't make the difference between late deaf and other.

You call yourself a researcher, when what you are doing is simply not telling the truth, which is this, if you would like to take another read of wikipedia the part that you referred to actually is referring to acoustic neuromas and actually says "implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with "these people" as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along.'
melonylund 2 years ago
My daughter now hears at 10 to 20 decibels which is well within the "normal" hearing range. She will be the first to tell you how much she loves her cochlear implants, how much she loves music, hearing the birds sing, talking with her friends, she loves the sound of rain on the roof, the rustle of the leaves in the wind and the squish of the snow under her boots.
melonylund 2 years ago
melonylund, we've heard that similar line many times from distracted, disoriented, dejected hearing parents of beautiful deaf children. You're speaking proudly for your own child which is understandable, but we know the common problems behind your curtain. When your kid grows up into frustration personally, socially and educationally, feel free to come back here to share your heartbreaking story. Good luck!
LagunaZurfer 2 years ago
@LagunaZurfer The only way your child any child deaf or not grows up feeling of these thing is because the did not get the love and confirmation, that they are worthy indivuals, who are similar and diffrent then everyone around them, and that they are to be proud of the fact that they are different, because that is how god made us. What I don't understand is this, why are so many of ya'll bashing a ci, but ya'll wear hearing aids?
MsKmathi 1 year ago
@MsKmathi
Wearing CI is all about your individual choice, same idea as tatoo or putting ID chip in.
aguabo 1 year ago
@melonylund, since you are such a dedicated parent, you should know that you can do even more for your daughter. As a family, you can all learn ASL. You can introduce your daughter to other Deaf people. You can get to know the Deaf community. Then you will have given your daughter something much more important than the sound of rain on the roof: a strong cultural identity, bilingualism, pride in who she is. It's a win-win for everybody, including you. Blessings!
Banerika 2 years ago 3
ASL8306 2 years ago

You subscribed to my daughters video. I was initially impressed at the amount of education you have; however, after listening to you I wonder if that's a lie too?

I watched the vlog last night and I checked Wikipedia where you said "low success rate" was removed. Well, I found it and here it is:
Implantation into the cochlea has a low success rate with these people as the artificial signal does not have a healthy nerve to travel along.
Read the whole paragraph with this sentence and you will understand what "low success rate" refers to.
FDA cares only about side effects (i.e. infection, death, etc). You are looking at the wrong agency.

1. The effect of temporal gap identification on speech perception by users of cochlear implants.
Clearly there has been some research done, I guess you just have to look in the right places.

Mucho gracias =D

it is so wonderful that you are learning ASL!

I agree that AVT is a terrible idea. For anyone!!!

Dr. Pisoni said the benefits, success and failures does vary. Do not go too far until everyone is fully informed and that each person is entitled to making a consent. Our US constitution clearly point out our individual rights..... shall not deprive one's life, liberty and property. thank you
aguabo 2 years ago
Dodiellis..It's really hard to say. With children, there's no way of knowing what actually sounds they hear because they don't know what anything suppose to sound like. CI is not meant to hear normal sound or restore hearing. It won't be natural sounds.Talking to few CI who lost their deafness late, some say it sounds like mono computer speakers(past CI devices) or stereo speakers(current CI devices). They say CI is many time better than HA.
annehorse 2 years ago
anne and dodiells, have you watched Dr.

There are too many factors why it failed or succeed in the past.
annehorse 2 years ago
anne, when making a decision on reception of CI, it still involves great risks. it is a part of brain surgery. Regardless of this, like you & other adults who are able to consider the benefits/risks, make sure each individual is 100% informed & make consent. I support everyone's freedom of choices. I dont support taking the body of ownership & consent away that involves w/ force.
aguabo 2 years ago

But technology is getting better and better sadly.
wacksnow9 2 years ago
Well, Now we have google I hope the parents will be more informed on this SHOCKING information....

Apparently, there are growing number of CI patients who are successful candidates and even the government is sponsoring them on the CI program. The CI program is suitable for CI patients who are part of hearing culture in their lives. If CI patient is not a successful candidate, can continue to be deaf active member of the deaf community. On the other hand, SOME of CI patients are doing well, and others don't.
funmoon100 2 years ago
funmoon, would you want our taxpayers to fund each Deaf child worth $1 million if his/her CI indicates poor performance?

This seems barbaric.
jenjenwitty 2 years ago
I also once researched about Pros and Cons: Cochlear Implants. I somehow retrieved the information from House Ear, Inc back in 1995 that CI cannot go to scuba diving, sky diving, or using curl iron. That was on the Cons side that caught my attention.
It is too often the parents don't take a time to do the research, etc.
ScubaSilentWizard 2 years ago 3

TheStralie 2 years ago
TheStralie, that really hurts. I do not like how they make money off our bodies. Use us 4 their experiement purpose. This isn't right. We do hv our questions answer. NIH & CDC announced that FDA uses "Efficacy" to approve CIs. Does the CI itself work, they answered "Yes". However FDA doesnt require CI companies to prove "Effectiveness" of implant. Does CI work effectively for all children, they confirmed and said "NO". I have been working w/ young adults who use CIs-they are delayed, emotional.
aguabo 2 years ago
I fully understand your expectations. I did also for 20 years ago and I was really frustrated then. It feels totally powerless when someone knew too much. But it is unfortunately not able to get money for such a research around the affected children as well.

Part 2
I often get such an argument by the CI team or similar to it is comparison with glasses, so one can not reject a successful medium for those who want to hear. But it's not right that they thought, for it is an operation on the baby. But the baby does not use glasses then!
