Our government is NOT a theocracy and most of our founders like Thomas Jefferson Christianity was a joke. Thomas Jefferson cut all the miracles out of the bible because he thought they were made up BS and that God was letting us sink or swim on our own accord.
That was weird. I think is strange that Glenn and other Christians think is a lack of God in peoples lives that makes life difficult. He made a list of well know Principles that anyone over 10 years old knows about and understands. With a billion Christians in this World you would think that they would be doing better with all that praying than us Atheist. While I think that all government should be more efficient in general I do not believe it to be "oppressive". hmmm i just reread the constitution. I don't see anything remotely like separation of church and state in it. I did read a clause that said "Congress shall make no law" etc. What wonderfully intelligent mind came up with separation of church and state when god and Christianity are mention throughout our founding documents. That said, I can never understand why the religious fanatics insist on organized prayer in school. Jesus gave some very specific instructions about how and where to pray. "The pursuit of happiness" was well understood in the time of Thomas Jefferson to MEAN that you get to keep your personal property - in other words, what you work and create/earn you get to keep. Without that, there is NO happiness whatsoever. So it is not correct to assume that "they" substituted the word "happiness" for "property". It means the same thing in its original intent. And original intent is 100% more accurate than "modern meaning".

Our Declaration of Independence speaks of the "Creator" and "nature's God". These certainly weren't inserted into that document in the 1950's.

Specific mentioning - none. However, the US Constitiution is meant to protect the people who empower the government from that same government. The establishment clause - long bastardized by the reversing of the mean of "separation of church and state" (TJ said that wall would keep government out of the pulpit but not the other way around) of course is the single protection of organized religion.

The Constitution is meant to protect your "Natural Rights". Those are only granted by God.
The document didn't spring from the head of the writer like Athena of Zeus. It is based in the literature and philosophy of the day. Those ideas must be considered when intelligently discussing the Constitution.
No one says that clerics should run this country ala Iran. However those in power are not prohibited from being religious either. Read de Tocqueville - he describes that atmosphere 1st hand.

Nobody, including me, says that those in power are prohibited from being religious. What many people, including me, object to is having the state force it's citizens to pray in school. And we reject the historically inaccurate claims by many US religious leaders like Pat Robertson that the Founding Fathers were some kinda Christain fundamentalists when they were nothing of the sort.

I was responding to someone who's basic claim was that God was inserted into our government post facto. Far from it. Our government is built on the basic assumption that God exists and is part of life and government..
However, prayer in schools dates to the New England mandatory system that required Bible reading & 3R's. This is the basis of our public school systems - though we have clearly deviated. There is no Constitutional prohibition from prayer and Bible..

It's a very simple principle Atlas. Just as I don't want the government to tell me when/where I can pray. I equally don't want the government to tell me where/when I can. As far as our founding fathers being religous you can't ignore history. They started meetings with a prayer and ended them with a prayer. They put things all over our government that were related to thier belief in God. I don't want to force my religion on anyone however don't force non-religion on me.

Please explain to me how the 9 principles and 12 values will drive the people of this nation apart. It seems to me that they are BASIC concepts that upon which MOST of us can MOSTLY agree. Do you think honesty divides people? Do you think that hope reverence and humility divide people? The only thing that divides us is the DENIAL that these principles are true. For instance - if you are dishonest, then I will have nothing to do with you. In that aspect, you would be right.

Yes, our government is a theocracy by the strict definition (that's history -- get over it), but that doesn't alter the fact that ours is also a republic. It's interesting that those left-wing nitwits who are always admonishing those who call them "liberals" (or communists, or whatever) and whining "why do we have to use labels?' are quick to use labels of their own.
