Look guys, stop arguing. I enjoy watching it, but it does get boring. Senna and Prost are both legendary drivers. Points count to 50% of the title. Thought Senna was hard on his engines? Look at Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, a couple of others too. But, there are more great drivers too, like Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Sir Stirling Moss & Juan Manuel Fangio, whose 5 championship record stood for many years. All I'm saying is, Senna and Prost aren't the best ever...
The 1993 mclaren chassis WAS a very good car to drive as directly stated by Senna BUT the engine power in the customer ford V8 was pathetically low. Schumacher outqualified Senna 8 times during the season so that says something about who had the better car. Benneton introduced their own tc in monaco I believe. Senna is the best driver of all time and this is coming from a schumi fan!
Senna also led 11 mclaren 1-2 finishes. Prost only 3.
In 1989 Senna retired from victory by mechanical failure 4 times, and every time Prost inherited the win. So in wins they should actually be 18-7 for Senna against the 2nd best driver in the world at that time.
@mushrume - No points don't mean anything. If a guy loses the world championship because his car breaks down every other race how the hell is that fair? In 1989 despite the points saying Prost defeated Senna, it's common knowledge Prost was whopped so badly he buggered off to ferrari.
@Anime998877 iit is common knowledge that he left because of senna but no one but prost knows for sure . and if anyone says otherwise they are a fool ..... \ what we do know is that points are what wins championships!!! and i do believe that is very important.. wich is important to a gp driver i believe
i think prost left because he would rather have a legit team mate . not someone who is always up your ass and trying to outdo youvery moment .
@Anime998877 his car broke from abuse . and u want to see a good teamates look at cervert and cts staewart. class acts , senna did not have that personality in him a major flaw in my eyes
@mushrume - In 1988 Senna had ZERO mechanical failures. In 1989 Senna had 6 mechanical failures, in 1990 he had 2, and in 1991 he had 1. I thought he was hard on his machinery too, but there is no consistency which would suggest he was hard on his machinery. He was just unlucky in 1989...
@shoeme69 your obviously fucking stupid, having electronics means nothing if you have a shit chassis setup. Just like this year the Brawn was a fairly basic car but the McLaren was far more advanced i.e. KERS it doesn't mean your going to be any quicker
Therefore "Senna had that many"..."Shumi had so many in...therefore he is the best..."...bla bla: Thats USELESS CRAP!!!
Only by VERY careful comparison of stats, and at the same time always taking into account the circumstances, eras, team-strength the particular years, mechanical failures etc....
One can come a small step close to some sort of "truth"!!!
But the real truth we will and can never now! We will never now if Schumacher was better that Senna or vice-versa!
@Coiler82 The third pedal wasn't illegal, it was an inventive piece of technical engineering, Jordan and Williams had it as well. It was made illegal because Ferrari complained, simply as they hadn't been able to rise up to the technical challenge. The forgotten seal, fair enough, but that was Austrian Grand Prix 2000, not 1998. And even then, that's a small error by an engineer, doesn't make the entire car a disgrace.
Hakkinen's personality and racing "balls" will always overshadow Schumachers...But, based on wins and championships, Michael's accomplishments are phenomenal.
People always talk about his accomplishments, I mean, Schumacher is good, but Hill, Villeneuve, Hakkinen and Alonso beated him, Raikkonen and JPM almost did in 2003...It just is the matter of being in the right car at the right moment.
My two cents: I have massive respect for both Schumacher and Hakkinen. The thing that makes me admire Mika more is his recovery from his accident in Adelaide - I don't think anyone of Hakkinen's era would have made such an amazing comeback. Schumacher may have been the better overall driver, but Hakkinen had to dig much deeper just to even get back into an F1 car. He's one of about three F1 racers who has managed to recover from life-threatening head injuries.
Schumacher was the better driver, he was the more complete driver, Schumacher was quick in any car he was put in and made the car work for him. People say he was in the best car for most of his championships, but they forget that he was the one who developed the Ferrari over the years into a good car to work for his driving style.
Quick in any car he was put in? 2005 rings a bell? He's maybe the best ever along with Senna...but he's not without weaknesses. When the car doesn't work he's slow and he made mistakes. Be objective please...
Ok 1 year out of what?14? he wasn't competitive, 2005 and to some extent 2003 were affected disproportionately by tyre performance. Who had the better tyre influenced the outcome of the race more than any other factor and it was too overwhelming for a driver to over come. Schumacher did have his weaknesses, eg weak under pressure. But overall he was the best driver on the grid since 1994 to his retirement IMO.
senna wasn't really that good int he rain aas people are makign him appear to be senna had more poles than wins which means he lost the lead more than almost anyone else schumacher though lets face it was 2x the wins of senna that says it all
It says your judgement is biased more than anything. Senna competed in 10 seasons, the last he couldn't complete. Schumacher competed in 15 seasons, 1 he couldn't complete. So any statistical comparison on that basis is deeply flawed.
stats says it all over emtoion thoiugh senna's poltics int he psort is much more admireable to schummacher i prefer senna but stats wise give cred where it ios needed
If Senna had lived, he would of won in 1994 due to Benneton's ban, In 1995 he would of won as Williams produced a good car. In 1996 he would of totally dominated the season, in 1997 he would of won again, and then he would of retired. I say this because if Hill and Villeneuve did it, Senna definitely could!
@rich1701 That's "so sad" (Hakkinen, 2001?) Senna definitely would have won more GPs had he lived today. With the improved cars, safety levels, and less competitive drivers (compared to the fierce 80s and early 90s) Senna would have done even better. No crazy battles with Prost.... Maybe Hakkinen could be a bit of problem for him but Senna had more experience... It is SO SAD we missed him!
@rich1701 that was good assumption, as for scuhmacher he could have won '99 drivers title if not for injury at silverstone missed 6 races, 2006 again could have won but engine failure at sukuza and gremlins at saopaolo, so he missed out. He could have been 9 times world champion. But that's life.
@bigbodlover If schumacher chose not to retire in 06, sorry.. if he was not forced to retire... he would of won in 2007 and 2008 as well. Because Massa out performed Raikkonen in 2008, and In 06 Schumacher proved he was quicker than Massa overall.
you ae so stupid to think senna is better than schumacher you must be on crack fremember 1993 schumacher ate senna for breakfast at silverstone boy did he eat up senna big time and his car was worst
Again learn to spell you fucktard, and 1993 the McLaren was a complete dog of a car of course shumacher overtook senna. However cast your mind back to donnington 1993 when senna destroyed everone including shoe maker in 1 lap !!
True. Though Hakkinen like Schumacher has had some brilliant races. Remember the European GP 1997 where he passed 2 cars, the sister Mclaren of David Coulthard and then Jacques Villeneuve's Williams. Jacques did let Hakkinen pass mind you.
I was telling you why I preffer Hakkinen to Schumacher because he never cheated. Ok, you are saying that Hakkinen needed a superior car to win. Granted, the McLaren of 1998-1999 was far greater than any other car on the field, but there was still skill on Hakkinens behalf that took him to the world title. His team mate Coulthard, could not match Hakkinen that year, in the same car. At the end of the season, he was 44 points in 3rd place behind Hakkinen and Schumacher.
No, I am not misinformed. I am very aware that the McLarens were superior during that period. I am just basing my theory on words that Michael Schumacher said himself. He has always said that Hakkinen was his toughest ever rival and that he had some really close and great races against him.
And excuse me, but who are you to excuse me of being a Hakkinen fanboy when you are the one posting comments about how great Schumacher was all over Youtube. In my view, both drivers were outstanding end off. However I prefer Hakkinen more because he didn't cheat a countless number of times, unlike Schumacher. You want examples, then fine. Britain 1994, Australia 1994, and thats twice in one season. Then there is Europe 1997 and Monaco 2006. His success is undoubted, but flawed!
First off, what facts have you shown either. NONE! All you stated was opinion. And secondly, I don't sympathize with Hakkinen, as much as I don't sympathize with Schumacher. I am not a Hakkinen fan, niether am I a Schumacher fan. Yes, Haikkene needed a good car to win championships, but so did Schumacher. Every driver does. Both drivers were very equally matched during this period, and it was great to watch them battle on track!
And how ironic is it shoeme69 that your username is shoemy69, which sounds really similar to Schumey, which is Micheal Schumachers nickname. And the fact that your profile picture is a photo of Shumachers helmet. I rest my case!!!
Fully agree with you. And having this race on video myself, the break-ups in picture are down to the on-board camera, not the guy's VCR, so what can we do about it...

points are everything in this type of racing !!!!
are you joking . consistency is king .
why do you think he mad mechanical failure . his horrific downshifts alone accounted for most.
lovely to the ear but horrible for the car. and he lost at least one title because of it .
but thats racing. being fast and keeping your shit going. he should have been nicer to his engines.
and prost would have won in 88 but only best 11 finishes count .
they did away with that .so ..

Formula-1 is a sport where statistics proves almost nothing!
The statistics only tell something about the results, but not how the results were made!
There are hundreds of factors that stats do not take into account: Different eras, who had most races in the better car, etc. etc.
