  • This song always brings me to tears

  • This song has never failed to calm me down-

  • Soldiers are nothing but the living proof of our inhumanity.Great stuff Pete.

  • What a masterpiece.

  • End wasteful wars and government spending. Ron Paul 2012

  • @jcrowley1985 not appropriate

  • @elderdragonIce I guess you want men to go over to die in pointless wars (Vietnam being what this song is based around) for the sake of preserving the freedom of corrupt corporations.

  • @jcrowley1985 I was going to say the advertising, but whatever floats your boat. I also happen to find most conservatives to be a bit more for the war than against it

  • 2:21

  • More Americans die from heart disease annually than those 50,000 that died in 10yrs of Vietnam.

More Americans die on America's highways annually than those 50,000 that died in Vietnam.

In 2006, we lost 2x more to gun violence than 7yrs in Iraq.

War is nothing but a hobby for America...and as long as you people keep reproducing you will be creating wars, simple truth. The more of you there is, the smaller share of resources for the rest of us.

  • @USMarineRifleman0311

I pity people like you, who do not value life. I had a heart attack and I am so grateful for all the help and care that made saving my life possible. Many soldiers come back from war and then fight for peace.

To prevent the waste of human life and to preserve the best in us is a beautiful commitment for so many people on this earth. You are apparently dedicated to a different goal.

"A man with courage dares to die, a man with inward courage dares to live."

  • @Thespadecaller

Im not dedicated to anything and Im not a hard liner on anything except common sense. Peace is an uphill battle you will always loose. There is no money in it.

You can look at life through your own little flower tinted glasses all you want. I dont have that option. Im reality.

If you want to save lives, go invent a safer seat belt or a better car, instead of protesting war and passing judgement on the supposed imbecility of man.

  • when will they learn that war isn't the answer?

when will they learn that people are people?

when will they learn that love is love?

when will we learn to accept the world; all its faults, and all of ours

  • I Cry for all women and men

  • @TheWolfsblut72

  • where are sent in to fight a war that the Politicians start

  • For Gordon

  • When will they ever learn...

  • I may be of this new generation but my mom used to sing this to me when I would cry or when I was and to this day I sing it to myself whenever I am sad.

  • too bad the right people dont listen to this song...makes you think...

  • Old men start wars....And they send young men to fight in them....It was so in my father's day....In my day....It's that way today.....It will be that way in my grandchildren's day........When will they ever learn?.....Sadly.....Never.......But remember....After all the evils were released on the world from Pandora's Box....There was one thing that remained......Hope....

  • all about soldier.....

  • Freedom ain't free.. you do pay for it.. with blood

  • How can people say Pete Seeger is dated? Everything I ever hear this man sing on this videos is stuff we NEED to learn today. It's just a relevant now as it ever was. Maybe even more when I turn on my t.v. and see protesters getting pepper sprayed and these so called revolutions in middle eastern and african nations and greedy politicians are attacking each other with speaches and debates that seem more like dog fights. WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN?

    jus sayin.

  • @johnnychaos91185 I gotta correct myself, I don't actually HAVE cable, but I see the news sometimes.

  • One of my favorite songs; it still gives me chills!

  • You all western people are shading tears on the death of you soldirs but think of thousands of millions of people who lost their lives just because of the greed for oil in west. If you hate war why don't you deny those cadidates in general elections who are pro war. stop this hippocracy .

  • hope everyone had a nice remberance day here is australia

  • Two more dead Aussie soldiers in Afghanastan, when will they ever learn?

  • Here is this video , with beautiful images, and the voice of a living legend or our time, and you are bickering about religion? How did that happen? Sheesh. You are so busy being "right" that you are missing some beautiful moments in your lives. Take a breath, relax your shoulders, enjoy the moment. Peace.

  • @tribedancing Well stated! A true example of what happens nearly EVERY time religion get's involved whether

    in conversation or otherwise...

  • @tribedancing Here's one Christian in these comments more ready to about ending wars than about some irrelevant arguments over who started what, when and where. Here's to stopping the disappearance of young fathers and sons from the earth due to war

  • Freedom of speech, freedom of thought.Thank you Walt Whitman,"For Only God Can Make A Tree.Christians started the public school system.Children used to learn the Holy Bible as well as reading writing,Arithmetic.Wonder why so many students are not doing better?Because more knowledge, more beliefs that don't Honor God.Lord Jesus help our country.

  • @DThor53 Sister Denise- Walt Whitman was no Christian. A transcendentalist, maybe, but not a Christian. Why did he prefer to live with animals? Because " "They do not weep for their sins. They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God. Not one kneels to another nor his kind that lived thousands of years ago...." Clearly, God & the Lord Jesus were not a priority for Walt. I caution you against praising people who do not deserve it.

  • Che emozione... quanta semplice verità nelle tue parole...

  • I love you Pete!

  • Pete Seeger ผู้ให้กำเนิดเพลง Where Have All The Flowers Gone

    ที่เรารู้จักกันดี..วานนี้ ในวัย 92 ปี เขายังไปแสดงออกต่อทุนนิยมตะกราม

    ที่หน้าตลาดหุ้นวอลล์สตรีท...

  • @thespadecaller, your introduction moved me to tears -- I'm old enough to remember my parents' deep consternation at HUAC, and my mom's explanations, couched in language a child could comprehend, helped to make me a lifelong quiet soldier for civil rights. THANK YOU for posting!

  • Are you not only so beautiful, you have talent that gives us SO MUCH HOPE! LOVE YOU - SO BRILLIANT..... LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!!! BLOOODYYYYY BEAUTIFUL!

  • a great wise song

  • i muat sing this song in music^^

  • Where have all the great men and women gone? It's about time we stood up and sought answers to questions like this. Well done to Pete Seeger for remaining true to his ideals through all the insanity of the 20C. The important thing is to keep questioning. We'll get the right answers one day.

  • Wonderful to hear and important to think about. Pete Seeger is one of the all time great people in our history, musical or otherwise.

  • BIG.

  • Comment removed

  • I will cry my eyes out the day Pete dies. He is a true treasure of a human being. I am a young person and still think his music rules. Music from my generation is mostly vile garbage. Many blessings upon Pete Seeger.

  • @heartfire451 I'm an "oldster" as Pete sometimes refers to himself as, but it thrills my heart to see that young people like yourself will be around to keep his work, legacy and everything he stands for alive. Your generation must keep the fire burning in the hopes that maybe someday we might not have to continue asking this age-old question.

  • stop Iraq and Afghanistan occupations!

  • @StopTheOCCUPATIONS Ermm.....they are a threat to our way of life believe it not ! Or so the politicians tell us. Where did they get that from ? lol

  • I also made it here because we were taught this song in primary school and I couldn't remember the lyrics past "Where have all the young girls gone?" I didn't have a clue what the song represented so feel very humbled to have learnt today! Amazing song! Thankyou Pete Seeger!

  • @preciouskezz they re gone to a justin bieber show lol

  • Been in the USMC over 30 years and just returned from my last combat tour. War solves many of the immediate problems: communism, fascism, evil dictators...but it is always replaced by the threats of the day. Circle of life. Those of you that never lived by the sword-don't criticize those of us that do. Don't even say thank you. Yeah got it, "thank you for your service".

  • i can only shed tears listening to this ever favourite Radio Ceylon song.

  • came here cos its a song we got taught in primary school, 25yrs ago in Porthcawl Wales. Liked it at the time but looking back what an awesome song to teach the new kids. Its not religious, its a tune like 'atishoo atishoo we all fall down'

  • This song was inspired by a Cossack lullaby which was introduced in the West through Mikhail Sholokovs's novel "And Quiet Flows the Don (first published in English in 1928).The time is early in the nineteenth century, some men in the village are leaving for military training camp and will soon be caught up in the Russian Civil War. One of those departing men's wife is singing to her baby. Where are the geese, they've gone into the reeds, where're the reeds, the girls've pulled'em up...etc

  • One of the strangest things about America is how often someone uses the David and Goliath parable to make a point, never understanding that we are Goliath, not David.

  • polish heroes sing this when they go for death in warsaw uprising 1944...

  • There will always be men with small penises starting war.

  • @DarkNshY Asia must be constantly at war then!

  • Haha. My mom use to sing this song to me before I went to bed. :)

  • viva peter

  • Genius. Poet. Inspiration. Prophet..... where do I stop? Oh, I almost forgot, Hero

  • They make us fight with ourselves for their personal gains, let us comeforward and say NO TO WAR.

  • @sanyalindrajit - I agree with you. the only thing that scares me more than war is the Chinese or the Muslims or Mexicans or Russians or N. Koreans forcing us to live their way of life. Look at all the countries without a good military and they have been taken over. I do not have the answer and I hate war and killing , but would hate not being able to make or listent to this music because of the above. PEACE

  • @rogerandsally I think you need to get your priorities in order. How can you claim that you want peace, when all you do is call for prejudice against races and religions? When will you ever learn...

  • @TheGatosarnoso He's not calling out against anyone personally. I have no problem with muslims, in fact, I know a few of them and they are decent people. But I don't like muslims across the sea telling me that I'm a son of satan and they will see me burning in hell. No, I'm not angry with them, but I get tired when social justice in governments tells me I'm not allowed to turn a deaf ear of I will be discriminating. I have to exhalt them and their ways. That's just wrong.

  • @MrNatwill2 They are not real Muslims. They do not represent their faith as a whole. Its like getting mad at Christians for the man who massacred dozens of teenagers in Norway. He claimed to be a Christian crusader. We cannot make generalizations based on faith.

  • Very touching....! God gifted voice.... Thanks for sharing

  • @SemperBadBear all of the good things that have been done in this war aside, if you agree that this war is being fought for selfish reasons, and is being controlled by monsters...why are u supporting the war? and not the fighting of the monsters?

  • War IS the solution to death pain and desperation. No man no promblem Joseph Stalin

  • i was in austin, Texas and heard this song played at a obama Fundraiser. they shouted that no one will die in war once hussein Obama was president.....we will be out of iraq, afghanistan and gitmo, .... lol............wow, this did not happen, lets add Libya to the equation........OBAMA LIED AND SOLDIERS DIE!!!! MORE IN AFGHANISTAN UNDER OBAMA IN 2 YEARS THAN BUSH IN 8...

  • @bluepastry

Only Nixon could go to China.

  • @semperbadbear yeah, and such an honor it is to die for some greedy ass bastard oil company. you go, tiger

  • @Wehrsau

Junior, you have no idea the difference we have made with people in these countries. Maybe this war is for selfish reasons, I haven't doubted that to a degree. But there are more human beings fighting than there are monsters controlling it. Rebuilt schools, given supplies for kids to attend those schools (donated by patriots at home), given care at our hospitals for the families that were victim to their own peoples bullets. We helped farmers raise crops other than opium for income....

  • War will always be necessary. And frankly, I would rather die than to live dishonorably.

  • @SemperBadBear

what is dishonorable is making people fight in an unnecessary war.

  • @2014nathaniel

    *Perspectively speaking.*

  • @SemperBadBear I think that is rather sad. The honor you talk of (i.e dulce et decorum est propatria mori) is someone elses honor you feel obliged to carry, i think it is far more honorable to live fully, and give as much of your life as you can for the furthering of humanity as a whole (even if it is only in little ways). Dying in the process of destroying other human beings is an absolute waste of everything there can possibly be.

  • @arfnore Sorry brother, you are no impact, no idea.

  • mr.brooks :l

  • Mrs. Sokolik made me go here

  • This song really makes us think.

    It sends a powerful message.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • i have to make a music video of this song for school. May i know where you got some of your images? If you could get back to me that would be great thank you.

  • @AlemanJuan i aplogize, most ppl i talk to on youtube arnt versed in logic. truthfully I'm undecided on whether bloody revolution is needed or not. the bourgeois are indeed good at what they do, but i haven't given up on gradual peaceful transition yet. who are u referring to in regards to failed social democracy?

  • @G58 is this a joke? not only is Zimbabwe not at all communist, but if it was it would still be a poor example (anywhere in Africa is a poor example of governance and prosperity). Sierra Leone is democratic...does that mean all democracies are unbelievably terrible? no, far from it. Go do your trolling somewhere else and let the big boys talk politics.

  • @heartflame Vietnam is not and never has been communist. Just because the communist party took power doesn't mean they actually practiced communism. If you wanna bash communism try actually talking about communism. I don't support or condone most, if not all, Vietnamese actions during that period. Don't assume to much of me, not all communists are genocidal ;)

  • those flowers have all gone with sinful, malicious, notorious, nasty, antagonistic, lamentable wars whenver and wherever they broke out, on our beautiful planet.

  • I remember this song. As a kid we had to sing it in something we called the Portland Play. I remember I always imagined this field of flowers and graves, where all the young girls, men and soldiers who were lost because of a war were left, like it was their own little heaven and it would fade from the rest of the world.

I still have that image, as I imagine the flowers being the place where the innocence and lives stolen by war lives.

  • I found myself crying...

  • thumbs up if you came here because of Hank Green!

  • Come see,

    real flowers,

    of this painful world. -Basho

  • My God we are at war with 3 different countries - killing innocent women and children just ike in Iraq & Afghanistan. How far can this madness go before we self destruct.

  • Rocky Radio... where have all the soldiers gone & died? IRAQ!

  • Thank you Mr Pete Seeger for a life time devoted to peace.

  • Blomstermakt! :-) Fred og kjærlighet!

  • when i was little, my mom would sing this to me every night before i went to bed. hearing it after so long makes me cry.

  • My four year old daughter is learning folk songs at school. I'm very pleased. I'm going to teach her this one.

  • Loved the video and the song of course. I watched it 5 times and cried every time. I've embedded it on my site at greatprotestsongsDOTcom Can you check that this is OK with you. • america was starting to understand whom war benefits during vietnam; that's why govnmt did away with conscription. you'll get much less resistance from a populace which believes there are those "choosing" to join the service. no one would join the forces if there wasn't so much social inequality in america: the solution the govnmt would have for this is reinstate the draft. humans, you're on a treadmill. restructure society, then talk about "peace"

  • peace is great but unfortunately impossible as long as the vast majority of humanity is ruled by a global elite. no war but the class war.

  • @reboandzooty exactly.

  • This song brought a tear to my eyes. As for the question it poses, "when will we ever learn?" I suggest 'how about RIGHT NOW?'

    Whether you are black, white, yellow, red or any other colour;

    Whether you be Christian, Jew, Moslem, Hindu or any other religion (or lack thereof);

If your Government (or Leader) orders you to invade another country, tell them to stick their stupid war up their corporate arseholes. We will not fight our fellow human beings for the profits of corporations!

  • yeah peace is amazing...I live in newfoundland canada and by ....the simple pleasures in life make it hard see why the worlds in terror 24/7 end war save the hungry and sick.

  • if the path to peace isn't peaceful, the result will not be peace

  • @pineau4 interesting circular argument you've got there. the problem with it (besides that it is structurally unsound) is that social democracy has failed. reform within a bourgeois system will not bring equality, which is the true foundation for peace. believe it or not, the corporations are not going to cede the strangle hold they have on you without a struggle. many people are going to die working for peace; either violently through resistance or peacefully through starvation and exploitatio

  • SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM

  • @heartflame thank you for your extremely narrow view. were all glad that you read your harris and churchill, but try a book besides mein kampf and friends sometime.

"defend a SE asian country"? wrong

"will render no real benefit"? wrong

try a history book while your at it.

communists are not the true liberals, but neither are they destroyers of freedom. they're arguably the only ones not enslaved by someone.

diversify your knowledge ya jackwagon. west isn't always best.

  • @pineau4 Try a history book? You my deluded friend are the one ignorant of history and reality itself for that matter. More people died in the first two years of the communist "peace" in Nam then on both sides during the entire war time involvement of French and American forces. The only person on the left who had enough courage to speak out against this was Joan Baez, Whose commitment to truth was greater then her commitment to political dogma. To bad the same can't be said of you pineau4,

  • @pineau4 Communists are enslaved by their own ignorance and stupidity. Forget Vietnam. If you want to see ignorance and stupidity reaping its terror in the 21st century, go to Zimbabwe and ask an ordinary person on the street what they think of Mugabe. If you're lucky you'll pick a person who is starving. He or she will be too afraid to tell you their thoughts. But if you pick a CIO agent [there are lots of them about] you'll probably be arrested and beaten up.

  • Pacifism is born out of ignorance and cowardice, The inability to recognize or face the world as it is. So to live comfortably in the world you have to go 1984 on it. Ignore the communist destroyers of freedom and merchants of slavery and then assign the role of world villain to your own country. Who at the time is sacrificing precious blood and treasure in an attempt to defend a Southeast Asian country that will render it no real benefit. Ya, great man that Pete Seeger.

  • Comment removed

  • I can't think of a living person that I admire more than Pete Seeger.

  • Thanks for sharing this - it's one of my favorite songs... never fails to choke me up.

  • @beggo321 its one thing to oppose the war, its entirely another to support the vietcong.

  • @bifutake thank you

  • Lovers... 591

    Haters... 15

  • 3of3 - the only hope remains that they haven't and will not ever learn how to tame the human spirit which cannot remain idle in a world so deeply scarred with ever-rising class inequality, social injustice and global poverty.

  • 2of3 - not to mention the gross injustice systematically induced upon the so-called third world, through war and open armed conflict, but more often through economic and political strangulations of wider proportions. and they've also learned how to use propaganda and media spin more effectively to hide their true agenda (global domination or neocolonialism) by christening their goals as 'defence' or 'global security' or 'anti-terrorism'. (continued)

  • 1of3 - the saddest thing is, they have learned. they've learned how to use subtle tactics to impose their will upon the majority of the world. they've learned not to draft people, for one thing, because they've realized it's much more effective to economically subdue the underclass which has no jobs, no prospects nor any options other than to join the military and fight for someone else's interests, unaware that they're simply prolonging their own and their children's misery. (continued)

  • I love this song : )

  • Thespadecaller: Great write-up-- provides excellent background for people like me who love this song, but hadn't a clue as to it context. Amen to your last line. And thanks.

  • We must all awaken, dear people! Of all animals, we are the only ones that stand upright. What does that tell us? We can think, feel, and reflect...we are self-aware...Now I'm not a Christian but I believe that this is what the Bible is referring to when it says we are made 'in the image (or likeness) of God'...it's as if we are collectively asleep, and have forgotten that we are ALL actually magnificent, Divine creations! War is really beneath our dignity to be engaging in!

  • I felt quite moved by this song, and I reflected on how Nature has designed us. Look at our bodies; no sharp claws; mostly flat teeth; we are not designed for killing ANYTHING, let alone each other. We were made for higher things, to sing, dance and laugh together.

This world could be such a beautiful place if (we) the masses would just take control of our OWN destinies, and not let the tiny elites of this world send our children into endless wars for profit and power. Will we now learn?

  • Isnt this Arlo Guthrie?

  • Where'd all the good people go?

  • they have but one direction, to provide the energy to sustain the next generation

  • you see they see the colours

  • They dance about the flowers in unison about this world/

  • What we need are bee's

  • I can hear the flowers Pete

  • WE had two gunners who REFUSED to keep flying during my tour of duty in 1969; one of thegunners feared for his life from the Special Forces troops we supported.....They were made "CQs" and hidden away on nights....I left in 69 and cannot IMAGINE serving in combat from 1970 on; the war was a total lie; Just Like Iraq; just like afghanistan; FEAR your government folks...NOTHING is as it seems,,

  • @Drbolla345 war of course will not disappear overnight. But the world should spend less money militarizing and fighting and on more educating and eliminating poverty. Then one day we might not have to fight in the first place.

  • So how do you explain radical groups that won't negotiate and terrorize others in order to get what they want? How do you plan on complying and neutralizing with them, if their opinions are religious fanaticism. How about forceful revolutions and liberating yourself from tyranny? If war was completely unnecessary, people wouldn't have done some of the major peace rallies without the abuse. War is needed whether before or after in order to come to terms. Even nature is that way.

  • war is no solution.

Its just Death, Pain and Desperation!

    Peace for this world!

  • @StevieJJhall1997 your are right, except for stopping slavery, fascism, and nazism.

  • @StevieJJhall1997 Out zionist masters does not wish a world of peace. They want a world of war. It makes them richer and keeps us occupied with stupid arguments so we don't think and have our own opinions.

  • I generally agree with you. Only with aggression, occupation and annexion - thus when someone else starts the aggression, and you can either engage in a war, or accept the frontier crossing (and risk it to go further and further) - I tend to be uncomfortable with undifferentiated "no war" slogans. Similarly with worst crimes against minorities or dissidents within one country. In one country it is clear there is legitimate self-defence and legitimate defence of others

  • @StevieJJhall1997 why would that not hold between countries (in general)? but yes, of course peace in this world is an ultimate goal

  • DEATH IS NOTHING, BUT TO LIVE DEFEATED AND INGLORIOUS IS TO DIE DAILY

  • @bnsgreech

to die in war is not glorious.

  • @StevieJJhall1997

    Whaa?

    ha ha ha.

    War IS a good solution.

If you start winning those fuckers.

  • @EdTheBadass i am really sorry for you, i dont know why you think like this, but imagine: you have to fight in a war, and your best friend fights next to you, and then you see in his eyes, and a bullet kills him, you see your friends dying, or you see your son dying... and now i ask again, is war a good solution? A boy, years ago asked: "Do we now send our children in this world like young men in a war?" a thats the way it is, this world needs peace, someday you cant keep fighting.
  • Who was the first that forged the deadly blade? Of rugged steel his savage soul was made

    you are not rugged, mate

  • @EdTheBadass He who lives by the sword shall die by the sword

  • @lxbzz6

And who lives by the illusion will die with this illusion, empty and weak.

  • @StevieJJhall1997 World peace means the coming of the Antichrist

  • I'm adding a verse; where have all the trolls gone : ) peace

  • no one is a traitor for expressing their desire for peace. nor r they an idiot for being a socialist. our soldiers did die to keep us free, free to play our banjos and to speak our minds. whether we are speaking critically about our government or not. our founding fathers killed and died to establish our rights and they urged every American to question authority. even the authority of the American government.

    so yes @sliceofcheesewithegg u r an imbecile

  • hello. I am a Socialist . Mr Seeger was sentenced to 10 years by the 'McCarthy', ( he won through,on appeal ), for refusing to testify. Freedom of speech ( or refusal there-in ). There was me thinking the 'land of the free' had that covered!

  • @poneil69 shut your hipppie mouth traitor!

  • @Sliceofcheesewithegg Open your slack jawed eyes, imbecile

  • @poneil69 every time i open them, i only see idiots like you.

  • Someone had to fight to preserve his freedom to pick and sing.He could be singing in German now if the war had gone differently.

  • I wish this world could be different.
