Electrical glitches...sometimes the starter won't work, other times it'll randomly start cranking and won't shut off until the battery is disconnected.
Sometimes the hydraulic drive acts up and leaks, sometimes the engine backfires terribly for no apparent reason.
@joeldude76 Yup, it would consistently backfire when shutting down, and sometimes it would just cough and spit for no reason while running. Shame, too, because it drove great and made mowing big lawns effortless.
Thats what I thought at first but after talking to my mate the operator he said he felt a strong electric shock before it caught fire. A mechanic at my work said it's possible the wireing could have had a surge buring through the flex cable and a feul line resting on the wireing wouldn't stand a chance.
That mower is an antique.......should have been retired years ago. Scags are the best around. Try a new one and you will see!

Scags have lousy electrical systems. Actually, they break down a lot, in general.
I'm a gardener and I have to deal with a fussy Scag pretty regularly. Not too surprised that this would eventually happen to one.
Hope no one was hurt.
