Swede's crash at 2:30 was pretty horrific and doesn't really deserve an 'ouch'. 1973 was a crappy year at Indy. In the 70's the cars' speed had way exceeded their safety capability. Agree with the poster re Smiley's crash in Quals in '82. The Indy 500's safety record has been pretty good since then.
@Darkstar27100 Dr. Steve Olvey, Savage's attending physician at Indy (and later CART's Director of Medical Affairs), claimed in his book Rapid Response that the real cause of death was complications related to contaminated plasma. Olvey claimed that Savage contracted hepatitis B from a transfusion, causing his liver to fail.
1:24 was quite telling. People were so eager to get out of their cars before they exploded into fireballs that they literally unbelted and hopped out mid-crash.
Pretty full-on stuff here. Being a motor sport lover, I often tried to define "the need for speed" and its inevitable associated risks. I see the Indy 500 drivers as peacetime's "fighter aces", they do what they do, they are good at what they do, but despite all that: when your time is up, your time is up. And they accept that.
The track officials and emergency crews are the unsung heroes here, let us spare a thought for them too.
What crash was that one from where he says its the worst one....the red car that turns into almost nothing.... I swear they used that crash in a movie.
@GoodCheeba - Actually, Swede was expected to live after that wreck. Savage died from an infection, possibly hepatitis B from a blood transfusion, in the hospital.
damn that one dude took his seatbelt off and started jumping out of the car before it even stopped crashing because he was on fire with that invisible flame shit. thank goodness things are safer now.
@C0LL1N Gonna bet he got out that fast because he expected a fire, not because he was on fire at that time. Fires after impacts were pretty common back then.
As a kid, going next door to the neighbors to watch the Indy 500 in color was a big deal in our house. The Indy 500 was a huge sporting event....televised....when at that time of the year, Memorial Day, there wasn't that much going on in sports that was televised. Sure baseball.....but, hey, baseball took a back seat to the Indy 500. Everyone watched.
I was on my way to qualifications when we heard on the radio that Art Pollard was killed in an accident....sticks in my mind like it happened yesterday.
no he died from a bad blood transfusion about a month later...after the crash swede savagae was actually joking with the medical personell...in other videos you can see him trying to escape whats left of the car.
The cars now hold 40 gallons of fuel. Back when Swede Savage died the tanks held i think 75 gallons. I know they made more restrictions after the crashes in 1973.
@hemi426bee69 After 1973 they eliminated right side mounted fuel tanks, which cut the fuel capacity in half. According to Mario Andretti they were cheating to get more fuel in the car by removing the foam lining which kept the fuel in the tank if it ruptured. They could put 3 or 4 more gallons in that way and no one ever checked, so safety be damned. It was a risk they took. By 1976 fire safety was much improved.
So he died later that summer of the burns. The race in '73 was famous for the rain delays, and just a mess- was that the year of the huge crash at the start, like in '66? Someone wrote a novel around it: Spectator Sport.
I didn't care much for the race much about then, after being a big fan through the late '60's
Not my idea of "Winning"
But I think I'm the one who "Fries Entertainment" in Santa Monica somehow!
The 70's got REAL hairy, starting with Mario's crash in practice in '69. Cars were splitering apart- Jackie Stewart blamed the Aerodynamic Ground Effects for the frequency.
the "real bad" crash of Swede Savage in '73 was out of turn 4, in front of where my family sat. the car was in tiny peices-and he was the biggest piece. He actually stood up- stll attached to a piece of wreckage- and you coud see the heat waves but not the flames as he squirmed around-I'll never forget the sight.
The driver at 2:32 is Swede Savage? I read he died month later in the hospital because they made mistake and he contracted hepatitis causing his liver to fail. He was fully conciuous after the crash.
Agree 100% with you on Smiley. I asked Tony George if he thought that crash was the worst the speedway's ever seen...Respectfully, he said "Anytime someone loses their life at this place, it's enough to give you pause. But in terms of shock value, yes, I think everyone would agree that accident was the worst."
Just for anyone unclear - Swede Savage was not killed by his crash, not directly anyway. His kidneys failed in the hospital, as he had contracted pneumonia whilst he was there. Savage was alive, fully conscious the entire time, and despite being a bit shaken up he was joking with the medics in the track ambulance just minutes after his accident. To be brutally honest, his crash looks MUCH worse than it really was.
There was also another tragedy in this crash. The fire / rescue vehicle hit and killed one of Savage's teammate Graham McRae's crew as it raced to the accident scene.
Thanks for that, I couldn't remember his name and you obviously want to name a guy when you are posting a remembrance of him. He was a crew member for Graham McRae from New Zealand. McRae was the 1973 rookie of the year of course. He was a very talented driver and most of his fast stuff was done in Formula A ( called formula 5000 elsewhere ) He was the constructor of the McRae cars. ( again mostly F5000s ) He was the current ( 1972 ) US Formula A champion at the time of this tragic INDY.
If you're referring to the clip where the driver begins to climb out of his car while it's still running against the wall, that was Mike Mosley. The year after, (1973) he deliberately rammed Salt Walther's upturned and burning car when he realised that Walther's feet, who were sticking out of his cut-in-half car, would be crushed against the inner retaining wall. On some clips, this is clearly seen.
yeah how the hell does he still get put of the car? he must have dropped back into his seat jus before he got hit. maybe broke a few ribs. still very lucky
I cant believe that no one was killed on crash at 0.45 - that has to be one of the luckiest escapes Ive ever seen, and so much track greece and oil causing problems - on bank corners it must have been near impossible to correct hitting oil trails
Mike Mosely was the driver getting out of car #98....He later died in and automobile accidant..great footage of Art Pollard's fatal crash in 1973 practice
There's a #66 car in there, that was Mark Donahue in 1971. His car's engine had just died. He parked it neatly on the side, walked away, and a few seconds later his car became an extension of the retaining wall.
