"Surf's Up", "Carl and the Passions: So Tough" and the "Holland" album come very close to the creative power of "Sunflower". A few out-take tracks from the "Sunflower" sessions worth a mention here are "Falling In Love" (aka "Lady"), “Loop De Loop,” "Soulful Old Man Sunshine," "I Just Got My Pay,", “San Miguel,” “Suzie Cincinnati,” and the original versions of "Big Sur," “Till I Die," and "Back Home". Most of these other tracks wound up on various compilation "best of" sets over the years.
Modulation masterclass! At the end of every line..Key goes up a major 3rd, then a minor/major keychange, then up a major 4th ( when girls..) then back to the original key via a full step up (alone..).
one of MY favorites since first hearing it on the Warner Bros. compilation album,THE BIG BALL back in the early 70s................it actually turned me on to the Beach Boys
I'm thinking of the Beach Boys touring this whole world next summer. It is going to be huge. Hopefully the rest of Amercia will finalize realize what dedicated Beach Boys fans already know; that the Beach Boys are the greatest band ever to share their talent with the world.
Yeah it's a wired phenomenon that happens in America where we get tired of something that isn't even stagnant for no reason. We do it to veteran athletes before they are on the downhill, too. From what I can gather people didn't even listen to this record and find out if they liked it, they just didn't give it a chance.
"It's really sad this album was such a commercial flop... no reason for this LP to not do better than #126 on the charts." -- peterp21
I agree with your sentiment! I'm struggling to recall--someone please help--but there's an interview somewhere on video: a close friend of the BB who was a Pgm Dir at a major Eastcoast radio station (Philly?) would not program anything from this album--he thought the public was burned out on the BB (2 much great stuff for 2 many years). It sucked 2 b the BB!

The cool thing about "Sunflower" and "Surf's Up" is that they both sound like The Beach Boys finally CAUGHT UP in a sense! Like The Beach Boys have finally become 1970 hippies. They were really going through a dry spell right there in the wake of the "SMiLE" debacle! White polyester suits in 1969?! Really? I'm sure those would have looked really hip at Woodstock!
It's really sad this album was such a commercial flop. All because of their perceived image, and the alleged music intellectuals like Jann Wenner declaring them musical lepers. There was no reason for this LP to not do better than #126 on the charts.
@Rally98765 You and me are totally in sync on this. I might like the 1970-73 era the best of all, though I do love and appreciate their classic era too. I might throw Wild Honey, Friends, and 20/20 in that batch too, though the BB weren't quite as gritty and beardy then. You're right about the bridge, it's a glockenspiel playing like on Born to Run.
@peterp21 Wild Honey, Friends, and 20/20 are good too. Maybe, just a notch below. All the albums from Pet Sounds to Holand sums up my Beach Boys collection. The great songs from the classic era I have as individual songs, and from, what I have heard about the albums after Holland they were not worth purchasing. Are there any hidden gems in that post-Holland era?
The first time I even saw a glockenspiel credit was on a Jethro Tull album! Is THAT those tinkling bell sounds???
@Rally98765 To answer your question about the post-Holland era, YES. Not much, but yes. The 1979 big hit "Lady Lynda" is beautiful and it's on the L.A. (Light Album). L.A. also has "Good Timin" and "Sumahama", both of which I really like. "Here Comes The Night" is also apparently worth listening to. Also, from the 1978 M.I.U. Album, "Come Go With Me" is alright. Also, Capitol Records plans to release THE ORIGINAL Smile album from 1967. Release date is set for November 1, 2011.
Sunflower may have been the best synergistic album of all time in the BBoys' career. Arguably they were putting their best effort forward for their new record label; Brian was clearheaded enough to create more than one gem, and each of the others all worked together in various combinations for outstanding songs. They were so ahead of their time at this point (1970-71.) Classic example of technical excellence not being rewarded on the charts and financially. This song is my personal favorite!
@SurfsUp1966 this is one of at least 8 songs they have relateing to meditation or half of it is because its really 2 songs combined when girls is a differant song.
@spacepatrolman Nah, I'm not sure this is a TM song. Mike Love and Al whacked out shit loads of TM songs... but Brian didn't, as far as I can remember.
released as a single in 1970 as the B side of 'slip on through'...neither side made the charts. I don't even remember ever hearing either side being played on the radio.
I love that Don Was tried to transcribe this for the I Just Wasn't Made For These Times docu and realized it wasn't in any key! SO many changes and Brians magic on full display!
This is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs of all time. It helps that I can sing both the lead and bass vocals. Still, this is an awesome song. Thanks for uploading.

Great song! Beach Boys from this era (Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl and the Passions: So Tough, Holland, ) make my day!
The bridge always makes me think of the bridge from Bruce Sprinsteen's "Born To Run".
