  • Yes, being black is a prerequisite.

  • I love these guys. They took drumming to the very next level as they did with baskball and many other things. One love for all black people out there :)

  • Killing man!

  • sex

  • MAn I hope I can get this good one day.....Maybe even better! Besides the volume when he was talkin GREAT video!

  • great drummer

  • i couldn't understand what he said half the time(no not because of his accent...because of the volume) but he really figured out the whole displacement thing

  • This guy is awesome

  • @PearlGroove who says there's a certain way to tune a snare right and wrong?

  • Comment removed

  • If you move the phrase over the barline using displacement you get "odd" sounds.

  • FInally! A gospel drummer who actually tunes his snare right!. Excellent sound! great groove too.

  • what the hell is going on at 5:02-5:06...especially the notes on the China?

  • @ebchew China hit 1 e >& a >2 e & a >3 e & a >4 e & a >1 e & a >2 and so on...

    snare hit >1 e & a 2 >e & >a 3 e & a 4 >e & >a 1

    kick hit 1 >e & >a 2 e & a 3 >e & >a 4 e & a 1

the > means that thing is accented

That's basically it.. but he broke it down to 32nd notes on the kick.. that's why it sounds odd also he kind of started on the E of that beat.. which makes is sound even more odd.

  • @MusicologoImperfecto

The whole point was the "displacement", which keeps a very generic and easy accented pattern but moves it into an unfamiliar place. That is what it is, you're making it too complicated.

  • @PositivelyBored well then explain it to @ebchew what he's doing so he can do it to.... it's not complicated, I told him what this guy was doing in the part he said... if instead of what I wrote I would have said "he's very good with his displacement which keeps a very generic and easy accented pattern but moves into an unfamiliar place" the kid would be like mm WHAT?? and my ">" symbol means HIT and I put "means that thing is accented" by mistake..

  • very nice well thought out and it has nothing to do with race man that is just talent thats all.....great job brother...

  • Super drummer!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dmx playing drums?!

  • NICE GROOVE :)

  • People. It's called practice with a metronome. Race has very little to do with it. Patience+Practice=Results.

  • In what band, group or artist plays?

  • samuel jackson?

  • sheeeeesh....i'm impressed not only with his groove but his command and articulation of the approaches!

  • u dont have to be black, u gotta grow up goin to black church which are basically music converatories where dudes start learnin to play when there like 3.

ask any of these drummers and all tell u that weckl and coliuta had alot to do with gospel drumming

  • something I have noticed with most of my favorite black drummers( this guy, chambers, beauford) is that the ride the hi hats with their left hand. is there an advantage to this? I am a decent rock drummer that plays in church. Our music isn't this syncopated though. I love this feel. Awesome video for sure!

  • yea its just the kind of music we play alot of gospel and even R&B drummers play this way i dont kno exactly why i guess its just the riffs and fills we play..i myself ride the hi hat with both hands, so i guess its just the groove and fills your playin

  • I do this because it is comfortable and you are free to hit more with the right hand while the left hand keeps that constant beat. This is good to practice if you are right handed and are looking for or working on left hand independence. When I see drummers who do this, to me, it symbolizes their maturity as a musician. Just my input - hope it helps.

    God Bless

  • carter is left handed so he just plays open handed on a right hand setup

  • nope. he's right-handed. he just plays open-handed because from young learnt on a left-handed setup. and when he realized it was wrong. he switched the setup back but since he could play both ways. he prefers to use open-handed. but on some occasions you can see him playing cross-handed.

  • yo it really did sound like he was goin off-beat a couple times tho lol but maybe i'm just a youngin' just startin this drummin thang.. he killed it still.. i just wish it was to a better beat // anywayz.. great job mayne :)

  • cool

  • Same concept that Jeff Porcaro used in finding his world famous grooves.

  • negro de mierda its good jej

  • sick drumming bro

  • cool

  • groooove...!!!

  • Maybe that too, but the main idea is actually

    RLRL(R)L FF B F

Parenthesis is a cymbal hit, B is snare and cymbal together

I explained it wrong the first time

  • It's either exactly this and/or a variation of it:

Four on the hands (sometimes the last hit being on a cymbal), then two on the feet, then snare and cymbal at the same time, then one more on the foot afterward, all in a triplet feel.

  • man beats me sounds like a displacement with the triplet groove..????

  • sick grooving, really sick.

  • is it me or did anyone see the ICE GRILL he gave at 1:02..LOL..everytime is see this!!!

  • Who is this drummer?

  • it looks like Pete Alexander

  • Bless you brother!

Holy Ghost has filled you with beats!

  • this is awesome

  • I know nothing of drums except I knew the minute I listen to this is was from Forsaken...Disturbed (LOVE UM)...and I LOVE PILLAR TOO...you guys Rock!

  • Very nice.

  • you're definitely right about that! I'm a lefty who plays a right handed set up, it has many advantages!

this guy definitely lays it down pretty well! nice work

  • excellent sense of timing during the pull-backs

  • and even though hes not a dw drummer, DW drums are the most versitile, at least in my opinion to the different sounds youll get through hip-hop and gospel.

  • HE RAW CUZ HE STAY N POCKET

  • hes not even on a dw drumset he just has a dw snare

  • thanks, man, I'm a white dude getting ready to play my first r n b gig with Marvin Curry out of Cincy, and this should help me spice it up on the gig.

  • yo good job

  • that was COooOOL

  • that my boy todd in the background...

  • You iz so fluid man

  • id say your a great drummer... but i changed my mind.

...it would be an understatement! :D youve got some amazing chops man. and great lesson too. im gonna try playin those rudiments on the hoihat as well.

  • What the? man, you've got serious drumming going on aight there.. Sheer pleasure of playing doc.

You're one heck of a drummer..

  • Great drumming!

  • man u got dis from chris coleman

  • we need that video back man, that guy is so gifted.

  • What size hats?

  • I believe its 14" hihats, but these hats are Zildjian, 'K Zildjian' K/Z SPECIAL HIHATS to be precise. The K Zildjian top gives the hihats its crisp, plain, dryness. And the Z custom bottom gives those hi-hats that projection, heaviness and definition it has...

  • how do you get your timing so solid!

  • play with musicians/click

  • dis dude straight

  • Great playing!! Love his humble attitude, I'm sure he'll be out on tour if he isn't already.

  • thats the same beat chris coleman played on his dvd

  • go on wit yoself! that was tight at the end!

  • ye you're cool man!

  • Awesome!!

  • real nice

  • oooooooooohhhhhhhhh shit that tight man that stuff at the end just made my day lol.

  • What type of snare is that?

  • looks like the dennis chambers sig (pearl). but i could be wrong.

  • I think it is a drum workshop snare. You can see the round hardware. On the rest of the drums too.

  • this guy is really nice..........

hey everyone check out my drumming with this gospel group i started playing with and let me know where you think i can improve and even leave comments on how the groups sounds and can improve thanks, were all just trying to get better.

  • What cymbals is he using?..

  • Sabian HHX Evolution's

  • this man is the truth

  • i think he is the same guy at juboy123456 or just type clarence on drums chechout the dude with the glasses.

  • You're talking about Pete, yeah that's him!

  • YOUR GREAT DRUMMER MY MAN

  • this guy is pretty ridiculous...his style is pretty damn clean. Everything is so crisp. Thats not your average good gospel drummer...

  • And this Guy also plays open handed. He must be a Letfy that is good thing!

  • Man this dude is the TRUTH! Real Talk!!!!!!

  • beat displacement is great as an addition to a groove but not as the sole beat. Doing a great job though. I like the fact you don't overplay. Well......., I just caught the end.....

  • Wao!!!!

i want to see more videos!

I like your style of playing

  • PETE ALEXANDER....IS HIS NAME

  • holy krap that guys sick!

  • Nice, I'm going to favorite this because if you don't mind, I'm going to sample that Sunday. Sweet man, that's awesome.

  • It looks like it would be a good lesson but your voice is so low I can't hear what you are talking about. Maybe you could re broadcast this video if you could.

  • You are reall nice bro,you look like some cats I met from ATL on youtube...
