I love these guys. They took drumming to the very next level as they did with baskball and many other things. One love for all black people out there :)
i couldn't understand what he said half the time(no not because of his accent...because of the volume) but he really figured out the whole displacement thing
check out Gary Chaffees patterns books, esp "time-functioning patterns" and "sticking patterns" With good practice and instruction it will get you moving into tight gospel chops in no time and is the root of what this video is about. Linear phrasing, compound stickings, big 15 sixteenth note combinations...moving accents around the rhythm, etc. I have found it fascinating. Also "technique patterns" pg 34-39 is like the bible to me.
@ebchew China hit 1 e >& a >2 e & a >3 e & a >4 e & a >1 e & a >2 and so on...
snare hit >1 e & a 2 >e & >a 3 e & a 4 >e & >a 1
kick hit 1 >e & >a 2 e & a 3 >e & >a 4 e & a 1
the > means that thing is accented
That's basically it.. but he broke it down to 32nd notes on the kick.. that's why it sounds odd also he kind of started on the E of that beat.. which makes is sound even more odd.
The whole point was the "displacement", which keeps a very generic and easy accented pattern but moves it into an unfamiliar place. That is what it is, you're making it too complicated.
@PositivelyBored well then explain it to @ebchew what he's doing so he can do it to.... it's not complicated, I told him what this guy was doing in the part he said... if instead of what I wrote I would have said "he's very good with his displacement which keeps a very generic and easy accented pattern but moves into an unfamiliar place" the kid would be like mm WHAT?? and my ">" symbol means HIT and I put "means that thing is accented" by mistake..
u dont have to be black, u gotta grow up goin to black church which are basically music converatories where dudes start learnin to play when there like 3.
ask any of these drummers and all tell u that weckl and coliuta had alot to do with gospel drumming
everybody go to this site i found you can learn crazy chops for free .they gather alot of videos so you dont have to go through the hassel learnmusicfree . webs . com
Yea that sounds about right but u are for getting one drummer thats been in the game before there was drummers like Aaron Spears, Spanky, Eric Moore,Thomas Pridgen and est. He plays for alot from gospel artists like Marvin Sapp, Fred Hammond, The Clark Sisters, John P Kee and more and thats Calvin Rogers.
something I have noticed with most of my favorite black drummers( this guy, chambers, beauford) is that the ride the hi hats with their left hand. is there an advantage to this? I am a decent rock drummer that plays in church. Our music isn't this syncopated though. I love this feel. Awesome video for sure!
yea its just the kind of music we play alot of gospel and even R&B drummers play this way i dont kno exactly why i guess its just the riffs and fills we play..i myself ride the hi hat with both hands, so i guess its just the groove and fills your playin
I do this because it is comfortable and you are free to hit more with the right hand while the left hand keeps that constant beat. This is good to practice if you are right handed and are looking for or working on left hand independence. When I see drummers who do this, to me, it symbolizes their maturity as a musician. Just my input - hope it helps.
nope. he's right-handed. he just plays open-handed because from young learnt on a left-handed setup. and when he realized it was wrong. he switched the setup back but since he could play both ways. he prefers to use open-handed. but on some occasions you can see him playing cross-handed.
yo it really did sound like he was goin off-beat a couple times tho lol but maybe i'm just a youngin' just startin this drummin thang.. he killed it still.. i just wish it was to a better beat // anywayz.. great job mayne :)
It's either exactly this and/or a variation of it:
Four on the hands (sometimes the last hit being on a cymbal), then two on the feet, then snare and cymbal at the same time, then one more on the foot afterward, all in a triplet feel.
and even though hes not a dw drummer, DW drums are the most versitile, at least in my opinion to the different sounds youll get through hip-hop and gospel.
thanks, man, I'm a white dude getting ready to play my first r n b gig with Marvin Curry out of Cincy, and this should help me spice it up on the gig.
id say your a great drummer... but i changed my mind.
...it would be an understatement! :D youve got some amazing chops man. and great lesson too. im gonna try playin those rudiments on the hoihat as well.
I believe its 14" hihats, but these hats are Zildjian, 'K Zildjian' K/Z SPECIAL HIHATS to be precise. The K Zildjian top gives the hihats its crisp, plain, dryness. And the Z custom bottom gives those hi-hats that projection, heaviness and definition it has...
hey everyone check out my drumming with this gospel group i started playing with and let me know where you think i can improve and even leave comments on how the groups sounds and can improve thanks, were all just trying to get better.
beat displacement is great as an addition to a groove but not as the sole beat. Doing a great job though. I like the fact you don't overplay. Well......., I just caught the end.....
It looks like it would be a good lesson but your voice is so low I can't hear what you are talking about. Maybe you could re broadcast this video if you could.
Yes, being black is a prerequisite.

If you move the phrase over the barline using displacement you get "odd" sounds.

FInally! A gospel drummer who actually tunes his snare right!. Excellent sound! great groove too.
