Cruise Missiles will always be cheaper -> hence a determined attacker will always be able to completely saturate ANY Air-Defense System with hundreds of low-flying Cruise Missiles, each ("each" meaning hundreds of Cruise Missiles for EACH A-20 base) -> DESTROYING it before moving on.

The only thing jamming will do is force the missile to switch navigation modes. Again, against a barrage of several thousand missiles, I'm afraid very little can be done.

If we do assume that it can out-run a SAM, then there is still the problem that there are too few Raptors for it to be the aircraft you'd have in "every" situation (or, even most of them) versus the SAM in a real war.

I'm not quite sure how fast the F-15 Streak Eagle was, but it sure set quite a few records.

AA fire or a fighter's cannon could take one down, but anyone rated to pilot an F-22 is also unlikely to ever come within visual range of an AA battery or enemy fighter without knowing it's there. And if it comes to a dogfight, I'd laugh at the pilot if the enemy pilot outdid him.

The F-117 shot down that day was also flown in bad weather conditions in a previous practice flight and not properly taken care of afterwards. The tracking ability of those missiles would have nothing on the maneuverability and speed of a Raptor.

Just one more thing, an F-22 can outrun this thing before the Raptor even makes it to top speed. Top speed of this missile is under Mach 3. The Raptor has been known for years to be a plane capable of over Mach 3. The "official" top speed is 2.42, but F-22 pilots are credited officially with flying a plane capable of over Mach 3.

It just doesn't make sense to me that an aircraft with the F22's stealth (and otherwise conventional) aerodynamic profile could overcome that kind of atmospheric adversity without risking real structural damage. If we do assume that it can out-run a SAM, then there is still the problem that there are too few Raptors for it to be the aircraft you'd have in "every" situation (or, even most of them) versus the SAM in a real war.

This entire argument has been about the F-22 vs. this particular SAM launcher. So, the valid point you bring up has absolutely no bearing in this conversation.

A clean F15 in prime condition could probably near Mach-3 at the risk of less structural damage than the F22, whose airflow efficiency is compromised in favor of stealth. From head-on, the F15 is just a needle-nose, razor-thin wings, and two giant intakes. The basic forward-geometry of the F22, on the other hand, is nowhere near as efficient.

@l3o0ze Right, but they wouldn't have gotten it as soon as they began flying an F-22. They would have gotten it when they became a pilot to a mach 3 capable plane. I never said the F-22 had perfect aerodynamics for straight line speed, I'm sure that the F-15 (If modified, and engines upgraded) could probably do anywhere from Mach 4.3-4.7 for a good time without risking anything major in the way of damage. I'm not quite sure how fast the F-15 Streak Eagle was, but it sure set quite a few records.

@karinosai F-15 Would probably not reach mach 3 even, The only Air-breathing Mach 3+ aircraft is the SR-71 (wich i assume you know) wich has a pair of hybrid engines, when at low speed it acts lika a turbojet, but for higher speeds its a ramjet, becaus the blades in the turbojet acually blocks the incomming air, wich prevents the engine from gathering enough trust. thus it is higly unlikely for any jet engine with moving parts to be able to fly as fst as the Blackbird.

@TheMarkic100 It's not impossible to shoot down, no. But as far as SAMs and air-to-air missile engagements, it's an unlikely occurrence at best. AA fire or a fighter's cannon could take one down, but anyone rated to pilot an F-22 is also unlikely to ever come within visual range of an AA battery or enemy fighter without knowing it's there. And if it comes to a dogfight, I'd laugh at the pilot if the enemy pilot outdid him.

However critiical areas of russia a f-22 is not invisible even flying without afterburners or its missile bay doors open.

@TheMarkic100 The F-117, one, is far, far slower than an F-22, and therefore MUCH harder to actually acquire lock on. The F-117 shot down that day was also flown in bad weather conditions in a previous practice flight and not properly taken care of afterwards. The tracking ability of those missiles would have nothing on the maneuverability and speed of a Raptor.

And still, I said earlier, that the ONLY REASON you can even obtain lock is because the stealth systems aren't built to block out shitty old radar like that, it's built to block/absorb newer radar systems. The kind that has the possibility of tracking a jet with the maneuverability and speed of an F-22. That's why you can't shoot 'em.

@chorademokracia You're not accounting for the fact that during the missile's flight it would have to both keep track of the F-22 during turns AND keep up with it while keeping the lock, and I doubt there's anyone who has ever qualified to fly an F-22 who couldn't shake one of these in an F/A-18, let alone an F-22.

@karinosai as soon as a f-22 opened its missile bay it would be detectable. these radar systems are used in tandoms of many that are all evenly spaced from each other. upon firering the f-22 would be fired upon by missiles from MANY systems. additionally f-22 dont fly mach 3 when it fires dingbat. additionally the speed and excelleration of a missle will quickly overtake any jet including f-22. the metal grain of sand comment is also not true but i will concede that as your a hammerhead.

However what most people ignore is that what is VERY EASY to do (for both US and Russia) is to drop down a satellite. They can do it with a button (its only a beam...). They blind it and make it fall. In case it fails there killer satellites up there do the job.
