Im in college too and need help on this. The thing is by 11th and 12th grade in high school, students mostly are so far beyond this stuff that they don't need to use it anymore. Because they don't use it, they forget. In college, they make us go back to the basics again. That's why we need this help. Imagine having to remember basic stuff from 8, 9 or 10 years ago, it's not easy. Actually if your in fifth grade,, 10 years is almost your entire life, think about it.

I think that what you are doing here is absolutely amazing khan, at the moment I am doing basic math at university and I have learnt about 50% from here, 50% from my lecturers. In my algebra class now, 2½ means multiply 2 and ½, so the answer is 1

2½ = 2*½ = 1

In my brother's class (3rd grade), he uses mixed fractions:

2½ = 2+½ = 2.5

Hi there, complete idiot here. hmm.. when I do a fraction and the result is an improper fraction, do I reduce first, then make it proper? Or do I just try and make it proper from the start..? I did that with 1/2 + 5/6 = 8/6 so i reduced that to 4/3 which then became 1 1/3. But if I dont reduce first i get 1 2/5. please keep in mind that im a math-idiot.
