Umm...wouldn't AVI actually be just a "wrapper"? I thought that what's inside that wrapper...DivX, Xvid, etc., was actually the codec...
Also while there is a ton of info on the web about this stuff, there's a lot of mis-information as well and ultimately it's all little more than a load of minutia for the average novice to have to wade through.
Hello, I'm currently editing our documentary that we shot with the XL1s. It is massive in size. What's the best way and program to compress it and still maintain the quality.

i have a question...iwhen i try to import a clip to my editing program (vegas pro 10) it says error occured while opening codec! any help??

AVI is going to give you full quality but the file size will be large.
MPEG2 when you put it on a DVD
WMV will give you the best quality for the lowest size
MPEG1 will give you an extremely small file size but the video quality will be lower.
