Hulk Hogan was a steroid based cartoon character with zero wrestling ability. McMahon was looking for a character who was charismatic to offset Ric Flair. Hogan fit the bill perfectly as he could lie through his teeth about steroids, pretending he really cared about America and the kids.
@cschin4 Steroids aside, Hogan did more for make a wish foundation than anyone else at that time. People conveniently forget that when they demonize him these days.
Its interesting how when Hogan would go to Japan he would at least try to wrestle. That's because the Japanese fans would not put up with his bullshit.
Bob Backlund could of been in the UFC/MMA matches if they was out back then. I believe these wrestlers would dominate the MMA scenes if they was out back in the 80's. Look at Brock's background. Backlund would of been quick and easily choke out or arm bar, leg lock his opponents into submission.
@bcushing Actually Backlund had great mic skills. During his reign as champ he was a serious wrestler, not the cartoon McMahon Jr later made him (and everybody else) become. He wouldn't get a job now because he's not a cartoon, but in his era he fit in perfectly.
@muta157 Well said. Bob Backlund was the straight shooty-ish champion people wanted then. Harley Race was no flamboyant guy either. It fit the time as you said..... He held the belt for almost 6 years. He deserves respect.
Hogan's matches in Japan were is best. He proved he was capable of more than just clotheslines, punches and leg drops. Unfortunately that is what he was asked for in the WWF. We all know the story of the Iron Sheik being the transition champ inbetween Baclkund & Hogan; but a "face vs. face" match like this in 1983 resulting in Hulk taking the strap away from Backlund would have been great.
@Reg197844 You are knowledgable. Even if I disagree about a Hogan Backlund match its good to see someone that knows Hogan could work if he was required to.
I think Hogan Sheik really helped solidify Hogan as a superhero face. But yes, those who say Hogan couldn't work (smarks usually) ought to just shut up. BTW good to see Hansen in there, maybe the greatest Gaijin ever.
@mongoose704 I agree with you totally. While Iron Sheik was never pushed as a major threat to Backlund's title (at least not as much as guys like Snuka & Valentine), he was a great choice as transition champ with the anti-American / Iran angle. He drew tremendous heat. Much like when Koloff took Bruno's belt in '71. Having Hogan win the belt from the hated Sheik cemented his place as the #1 face.
im a fan of both wrestlers especialy their heel personas , but as far as wrestling goes bob backlund was legit winning all state in high school and ncaa division 1 in collage in a real wrestling match backlund would have picked his teeth with hogan
@123wwe Hogan manhandled Verne Gagne who was as legitimate as could be.
But yes Backlund was legit tough. In fact I have heard Backlund was kind of an enforcer against certain wrestlers coming from another territory who were also "shooters." Backlund would remind them to not get cute and try to shoot on a champ to take the belt back to their territory.
hogan doesnt belong in the same ring with backlund.....look at backlunds technical ability..his condition and amazing strength....a much better wrestler than hogan ever was....
Dude, yeah, it's wrestling. I'm not going to use the word "fake" because I know they really get hurt. But still... everything is set up. To say that someone doesn't belong with someone else in a wrestling ring is ridiculous. Hogan's the biggest name in wrestling history.

Oh Backlund was incredibly strong. I remember seeing him lift a man who was flat on his back with one arm, like a curl!! He was an animal in the gym and, though he isn't big, he has tendon strength.
@SashaNein I agee ! Some of these guys are fuck'n to much. Is there a way to see the match in its entirety . Both Backlund and Hogan were superb athletes. Can you just imagine if a match like this would of took place here in America !

I heard Bruno say just the oposite about Backlund. He actually liked Bob for not being an idiot. WHo would care what that steriod abuser Graham thought.
Fuck Bob Backlund. I remember after a match when I was a kid, I went up to him & asked for an autograph being a big fan & all. He just looked at my pen/paper and said, "I have to take a shower" & just walked by. You don't treat fans like that especially the young ones. He was a fake & maybe should've been a heel. That's probably why WWF didn't explode until Hogan became champ. I'll never forget that.
It's like in Chris Jericho's book he talked about how he went up to Sika and asked for his autograph and Sika looked at his pen and paper, looked him in his eyes and said, "Fuck off kid. But, Jericho said he was in to much schock that Sika spoke english for his feelings to be hurt.

But whatever, for a 7yr champ that's virtually forgotten now shows that he wasn't the right man for that organization.
Bob Backlund was an illiterate. I know later in his life he did learn but at the time he may not have been able to read or write well enough to give an autograph.
In 1980, when Hogan was a heel managed by Freddie Blassie, he was booked as a unstoppable train. They had matches where he squashed two or three jobbers at once. All to make him look like a credible foe for Andre The Giant.

and to the guy that said h.o.f for bob faglund, give me a break. he is not a h.o.f, but i will say he should be in there out of respect for vince sr. but if you have ever talked to bob, you would know, that this guy dont even know , what h.o.f stands for. thats how fucking stupied he is. i meet him a few times, and for him to talk to me i felt as if i was talking to a guy with a bunch of soggy apples in his mouth.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
listen bob can sux a huge donkey dick.. i cant stand him he was ,, like a down syndrom wrestler .... that had skillz he was a fucking dum ass . he could not use the stick, nor did he do anything besides head locks and monkey flips and airplane spins, yes he was good 4 the time. but he was the only one at the time. they brought in ppl to fight him , and gave him a push to make him look good. but fans never connected with him. it was a proud day when i saw him say i quit. fuck the towel.
Bob should be in the HOF and Vince is doing his father an injustice. This was his father's last champion. The man his dad wanted to represent wrestling. Bob my not have been the most colorful guy, but in a way he was perfesional wrestling's Superman. In that his character was honest, hard working and a great athlete who was willing to defend wrestling against evil until he could no longer do so.
i believe bob backlund held the belt longer than anyone but sammartino. longer than hogan, hart, undertaker, michaels, warrior, triple h, rock, or any of the other recent "greats". he "lost" the title (after six years) in a match where he wrestled injured. he never submitted, his manager threw in the towel. backlund didn't cuss, didn't disrespect his opponents, and understood that children looked to him as a role model. that is the definition of a man who deserves to be in the hall of fame.
Oh I agree. I didn't forget. But I remeber baclund coming back and he wasn't over with the crowd. And I don't think it was the dumbest move to have him snap like that. It made for an interesting story with Owen involved and Bret's parents. It was very complex and took alot of thinking.
And then Vince Jr. blew it after by jobbing Backlund out to Kevin"Big Gimpy"Nash when he could have used him as the ultimate "old-school"heel to the young guys.
The problem was as he grew older Backlund was becoming more dangerous to work with. Even with his milky, doughy body he was a strong dude. He once gave Ivan Koloff a one arm curl without his help. Bobby did not know his own strengh and as he got older he got careless. He still works out like a demon.
Oh God, you internet marks just won't admit to Hulk Hogan being the man who made wrestling a household word, can you? Come on. Flair was good at what he did and all, but he didn't do half of what Hulk did for the sport. Just admit Hulk Hogan is the biggest star in wrestling history and all your needless anger will go away. It won't hurt to just admit it, kid.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wrong, Tommy Rich made wrestling a household name because of TBS. You go anywhere in the country, even the world and mention the nickname "Wildfire" and anyone will know you're talking about Tommy Rich, former world champion.
I think your half right, Vince made wrestling a household word, Hogan was the perfect personality. He was bigger than life, was in Rocky 3 and could work well enough for 15-20 minute matches.
Hogan was good at promoting the sport but Flair gave it class by presenting himself as an icon. Slick Ric could make a broom look good while Hogan looked good in Japan and had faces and heels fed to him in WWF and WCW which could lead to uneven matches.
I love how Backlund fought and conquered monster heels in his prime. Guys like Hogan, Stan Hansen, Blackjack Mulligan, Big John Studd and Killer Khan. Awesome.
William Perry was put in the HOF in 2006 because the WM event was in Chicago and thats who Perry played for. It was all a joke to just get people to tune in and for the Chicago crowd to get all excited.
a young hulk hogan versus bob backlund ,in his prime backlund could twist anyone into a knot including hogan here he used an abdmoninal stretch , a former coworker saw thies 2 wrestle at the new haven colusium back in 1980 just before hogan left , he said it was amazing hogan had more moves back then but backlund won by submission with a boston crab, but backlund was alot more agresive during that time
It was awesome to get to see that. I thank the person who uploaded it. I am DYING to see the match where Backlund 'wins' the title from Superstar Billy Graham. At the time of this writing, I cannot find it here on YouTube. I would be very grateful to anyone who will contribute footage of that match here on YouTube in the future.

Not a fan of "Mr" Backlund, I take it?
cpossberg 3 years ago 3
At that time, Backlund was the man. Simply a different time. That's all.

and to the guy that said h.o.f for bob faglund, give me a break. he is not a h.o.f, but i will say he should be in there out of respect for vince sr. but if you have ever talked to bob, you would know, that this guy dont even know , what h.o.f stands for. thats how fucking stupied he is. i meet him a few times, and for him to talk to me i felt as if i was talking to a guy with a bunch of soggy apples in his mouth.

listen bob can sux a huge donkey dick.. i cant stand him he was ,, like a down syndrom wrestler .... that had skillz he was a fucking dum ass . he could not use the stick, nor did he do anything besides head locks and monkey flips and airplane spins, yes he was good 4 the time. but he was the only one at the time. they brought in ppl to fight him , and gave him a push to make him look good. but fans never connected with him. it was a proud day when i saw him say i quit. fuck the towel.

Bob should be in the HOF and Vince is doing his father an injustice. This was his father's last champion. The man his dad wanted to represent wrestling. Bob my not have been the most colorful guy, but in a way he was perfesional wrestling's Superman. In that his character was honest, hard working and a great athlete who was willing to defend wrestling against evil until he could no longer do so.

i believe bob backlund held the belt longer than anyone but sammartino. longer than hogan, hart, undertaker, michaels, warrior, triple h, rock, or any of the other recent "greats". he "lost" the title (after six years) in a match where he wrestled injured. he never submitted, his manager threw in the towel. backlund didn't cuss, didn't disrespect his opponents, and understood that children looked to him as a role model. that is the definition of a man who deserves to be in the hall of fame.
grahamusic 3 years ago 4
I agree. Bob was a man of great character. He was the definition of humulity. He wanted to show the world a true wrestling champion.
kevmoney2make 3 years ago 4
You mean...until he lost his mind and attacked Bret Hart. *cough cough "kayfabe" cough cough* (grin)
brnleague99 3 years ago
Oh I agree. I didn't forget. But I remeber baclund coming back and he wasn't over with the crowd. And I don't think it was the dumbest move to have him snap like that. It made for an interesting story with Owen involved and Bret's parents. It was very complex and took alot of thinking.
kevmoney2make 3 years ago
And then Vince Jr. blew it after by jobbing Backlund out to Kevin"Big Gimpy"Nash when he could have used him as the ultimate "old-school"heel to the young guys.
bull705 3 years ago
The problem was as he grew older Backlund was becoming more dangerous to work with. Even with his milky, doughy body he was a strong dude. He once gave Ivan Koloff a one arm curl without his help. Bobby did not know his own strengh and as he got older he got careless. He still works out like a demon.

just proves that hogan sucks ass today, yesterday and always....he couldn't carry ric flairs dirty jock strap

Wrong, Tommy Rich made wrestling a household name because of TBS. You go anywhere in the country, even the world and mention the nickname "Wildfire" and anyone will know you're talking about Tommy Rich, former world champion.

What are you smokin'?? Can I get some? "Wildfire" Tommy Rich? Seriously???

I think your half right, Vince made wrestling a household word, Hogan was the perfect personality. He was bigger than life, was in Rocky 3 and could work well enough for 15-20 minute matches.
I also think Flair is really over rated though.
slydewinder 2 years ago 2
i appreciate that flair had been working for decades in the business, but yeh he is mega mega over rated. i never saw what everyone else saw in him
robbiethecowboy 2 years ago
Hogan was good at promoting the sport but Flair gave it class by presenting himself as an icon. Slick Ric could make a broom look good while Hogan looked good in Japan and had faces and heels fed to him in WWF and WCW which could lead to uneven matches.

I love how Backlund fought and conquered monster heels in his prime. Guys like Hogan, Stan Hansen, Blackjack Mulligan, Big John Studd and Killer Khan. Awesome.
brnleague99 3 years ago 3
Awesome. Have you got the whole match?

Sorry. I have only this digest version.

Classic wrestling between superstars. I'd forgotten that Hogan could wrestle at all given his reign as champion!

how the fuck is William Perry in the HOF and not Backlund?
swf12 3 years ago 4
He was in TNA at that time
Urvy1A 3 years ago
William Perry was put in the HOF in 2006 because the WM event was in Chicago and thats who Perry played for. It was all a joke to just get people to tune in and for the Chicago crowd to get all excited.
MrBeverlyHills 3 years ago
Dude, Bob Backlund should have been in the HOF! The reason why he isn't there is b/c Vince McMahon is a cock-sucker!
SidJustice1 3 years ago 2
I agree....but how is Pete Rose and William Perry in the HOF and not Mr. T - he helped sell the first WrestleMania.

BOB BACKLUND: WWE HALL OF FAME 2009
DrewBludd 3 years ago 5
a young hulk hogan versus bob backlund ,in his prime backlund could twist anyone into a knot including hogan here he used an abdmoninal stretch , a former coworker saw thies 2 wrestle at the new haven colusium back in 1980 just before hogan left , he said it was amazing hogan had more moves back then but backlund won by submission with a boston crab, but backlund was alot more agresive during that time
123wwe 3 years ago
It was awesome to get to see that. I thank the person who uploaded it. I am DYING to see the match where Backlund 'wins' the title from Superstar Billy Graham. At the time of this writing, I cannot find it here on YouTube. I would be very grateful to anyone who will contribute footage of that match here on YouTube in the future.
