  • Just a quick update: I'm planning to upload a slightly better version of this footage soon. If that goes to plan, this old, "jerky" video can be decommissioned.

  • For all the time and cash CBS put into re-mastering the original you'd think they'd restore the second pilot to it's original NBC presentation form. From what I read the remastered Cage pilot will be on the third season dvd set.

  • With the exception of the Act titles, end credits, and corridor scene in the beginning, I've seen most of these scenes, which were usually deleted when broadcast. Still, quite interesting.

  • Dont forget URANUS...

    Sorry, I couldnt resist.

  • By the way, why is the frame rate so jerky?

  • it was squeezed through the space-time continuum from an alternate universe.

  • These aren't "deleted scenes" are they? I seem to completely remember these scenes being in the aired episode.

  • Nothing here was deleted, except for the very opening and end credits. The rest was resequenced and retitled to air as the third episode in the series essentially unchanged.

  • Has any other series ever had two pilots before?

  • These are pretty cool, I like subtle scenes like the ones in this video. A shame these were edited out.

  • If my memory serves, about 11 years ago, when The Sci Fi Channel aired "Star Trek: Special Edition", when they had William Shatner and then Leonard Nimony hosting and giving commentary between commercial breaks of each episode (it aired daily for 90 minutes and they did the whole series), when they got to this episode, they aired it just like this. I know I have seen these scenes before in this format and I have never seen a Star Trek DVD.

  • What is Gary doing when he is walking behind that woman and he puts his hand out?

  • Trying to grab her "attention," I guess. This show was still a little sexist for its time.

  • "Still a little sexist for its time" -- I know, right? Can you imagine the public outrage if women were objectified in the media today?

  • If you have a sense of humour check out my star trek parody if you want a laugh :)

  • I would love to see the full second pliot with all deleted scenes, cause it the beginning and it would be to see it on DVD

  • where did you get this?

  • Wow, I've never seen Spock smile before.

  • He smiled once in the Pilot episode but it was just for a second.

  • See originally he wasn't supposed to be the emotionless one, there was a chick that was supposed to play the emotionless full of logic one but they switched it over to Spock with the new pilot.

  • That was the original "Number One", played by Majel Barrett with brunette hair.

  • This was one of my favorite episodes! Thanks for posting!

  • It was also too bad about Kelso, Mitchell, Dehner and Piper. Didn't get to learn too much about them, so I was really pleased when the novel "Strangers From The Sky" used them (sans Piper) as three prime characters with Kirk and Spock in a time travel adventure back to the mid-21st century.

  • CKCO-TV Kitchener, Ontario aired this version of Where No Man Has Gone Before one time around 1976. Really took me by surprise because I'd seen the episode before in the 'normal' format, so it stunned me to see the opening titles overlaid on action scenes. I wonder how CKCO got hold of this print?

  • definatly like how they ended up doing it over this way

  • Quinn Martin,Barrrfffff

I think you THINK,your comment makes you sound inlelligent,,,,,ItREADS,Stupid,my friend,

  • Wait New Voyages re-did this scene in the original pilot

  • hehe.. gotta love the influence Quinn Martin Productions had on programming, vis-a-vis, the Episode and Act Annotations

  • Still better than --anything-- Berman has done.

  • How can anybody watch this version of the episode?

  • This is almost as if Quinn Martin had produced Star Trek.

  • Whoa! I never it before. This is very rare show.

  • The guy at 2:56 was the guy who played Doctor Bryce in the original pilot, right?

  • To answer your Dr. Bryce Question, no that is not the actor (John Hoyt) who played Dr. Phillip Boyce in the first pilot "The Cage".

That actor walking with Sulu at 2:56 is Paul Fix, who played Dr. Mark Piper in the Second Pilot "Where No Man has Gone Before" only.

  • Michah from The Rifelman. I realized that watching The Rifelman and then thinking back to the Cage

  • Sorry Where No Man Has Gone Before. But seriously that music at the end. Wow glad they didn't go with that.lol

  • Those first scenes with Gary Lockwood as Mitchell make him look like a horndog!! Had he stayed on the show, he would have given Kirk a run for his money as far as macking on all the chicks Kirk hooked up with. It's too bad he didn't stay on. He would have been a great addition. But most likely Spock would not have become the character we all know and love, compared to how he is here with his bellowing out of orders and smirking at the beginning of the chess game.

  • I guess the Tailhook Incident was forgotten by the 23rd. Century.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Gotta ask, where did you get this?

  • Thank you for these rare bits! I thought I had seen it all!

  • The music is the most surprising. "Star Trek" was pitched to all (most famously to DesiLu's Lucille Ball) as a "Wagon Train to the stars." The music sounds like it! Get along little dogies.

  • The first bridge set was better than in later episodes in my opinion. What a great show!

  • I enjoyed seeing this footage very much. There is a film noir feel to it, as if Kirk is a detective writing in his diary. Rod Serling made science-fiction feasible for television in the early 60's, so we have him to thank for even the possibility of Star Trek even happening. George Takai was featured in a Twilight Episode which I saw recently, he was very good in it. I was always disappointed that they didn't give Takei, Doohan, and Nichols more to do as characters, even in the movies.......

  • Anyone noticed the elevator view from above? floor and hallway are a single floor,..no way that elevator can move (LOL)

  • I realy like seeing alternative or deleated scenes like the alternate beginning and ending credits.

Please forgive me but the picture quality leave something to be desired!

  • Where did you find this?

  • Remember that NBC, in giving Gene Roddenberry another chance to pitch "STAR TREK" before considering it for their Fall 1966 schedule, wanted a "different" pilot than the one previously submitted ["The Cage"]. Gene gave them what they wanted- different music (and theme), titles and "acts", and a slightly different crew...after the network accepted this version, Roddenberry "fine tuned" everything yet again before production began...it's as simple as that.

  • i must have transferred aboard AFTER they removed the ladders from the Enterprise. very interesting clips!! Thanks

  • space engineers union lobbied to have ladders removed in an effort to preserve jobs, as ladders don't require maintenance ;-)

  • This is awesome.

  • This almost looks like an episode of "The Outer Limits."

  • i just cant get enough star trek

  • Thanks for putting this up. Wonderful to see these old 'work-in-progress clips'.

  • The basic design of this pilot layout with the "Tonight's Episode" and "Act 1, Act 2, Act 3, Act 4" and "Epilog" were throwbacks Desilu's "The Untouchables." It was used in many live TV dramas to discern the ads from the programs and Desilu producer Quinn Martin adapted it for "The Untouchables." Of course, it was a format that became a hallmark of every Quinn Martin & QM series, whether anthology, cop or detective series, war drama or science fiction (remember "The Invaders"?)

  • I'm glad star trek took on it's own format. It's a little too dramatic, and kind of boring like this.

  • I totally agree. I sincerely believe the format was to the detriment to the otherwise excellent but short-lived "The Invaders" series, Quinn Martin's only foray into sci-fi. The format's OK for serials like "The Fugitive" and adds some serious class to fine crime dramas like "The FBI" and "The Untouchables," but it was really hokey on "12 o'Clock High" and spoiled the chilling continuity of "The Invaders." You can have commercial pauses, but "Act" titles wreck the fantasy factor of sci-fi.

  • Corny as Hell , But VERY interesting. I'm glad they dropped that format , (it was all star-dates & no-info). Hmmm it DID work for the X-files , though =) .

  • Star Trek..........Funny, I've never heard of this show. Did it ever hit the air? Probably not. MAN, what a CRAPPY knock off of Lost in Space.

    Norm

  • I love Lockwood at 2:37-2:40

  • "Flash the bridge! Condition ALERT". Uh....why? Nothing really happened yet, they just picked up a distress buoy. As I recall, Kirk said some other weird things in this episode NOT included here, like "Gravitation on automatic!" You mean to say that the rest of the time everyone had to WILL themselves to stay stuck to the decks as opposed to flying around inside the ship? "Hey, it's sooooooo much easier to walk around now that gravitation is on automatic!"

  • Such a flagrant display of emotions from Spock.Smug grin followed by astonishment and then annoyance.Later he sulks over a rook.Sarek would have been mighty pist at him LOL

  • Very good, i think they made the right choice not using the "Act 1" "Act 2" stuff. Anyway everything turned out good even though NBC probably made the wrong decision on the cancellation. Thankfully Roddenberry chose syndication for TNG. To bad Paramount didn't have the sense to do that on Enterprise or it might still be on. Let's hope the new film next year is good.

  • wow shitty music.

  • That was the same shitty music they incorporated into the series.

  • Yes, it's called incidental music. It's stuff they play in the background to drive the atmosphere. I noticed they were playing the same stuff in place of the theme music in the opening. Those were still to be created if the series was picked up. I can understand why these scenes were cut when they made the pilot for the first episode. They sucked and did nothing for the story. I'm glad they did away with all those overhead shots too.

  • Thanks a lot for posting this.

I've been watching this damn show

too many years and i've never

    seen this until tonight.

  • Lemme guess, those AREN'T on the overpriced DVDs...

  • Never seen these out takes before. Thanks for posting

  • I got the 2nd pilot on VHS at a convention in 1982. Love it!!

  • cooooooool!!!

  • Flash the bridge!(?)

  • Woah, love the extended beginning and Gary Mitchell bit (as it shows how cocky he was before even getting the "God-like" powers!).

  • Does anyone think this will ever be released on dvd? From what I understand this is the version that was shown to NBC executives to garner interest for the series. I actually like this version better than the broadcast version.

  • Amazing.

  • Hehe... Look at Mitchell reaching for that girl then checking another girl out.

  • Yeah, 'Condition Alert' and Mitchell is still chasing tail. Love it!

  • THANK YOU!

"Where No Man Has Gone Before" is one of the BEST Star Trek episodes ever made.

  • You said it, both the original pilots such as the Cage and Where No Man Has Gone Before made Trek as a show for a vulnerable and realistic scenerio of life, death and duty.

  • I couldn't agree more. I watch both pilot episodes more often than any others. Together, they really defined the show as it was intended to be: a thoughtful reflection of the human condition. It's the heart of every incarnation Star Trek.

  • I thought that the other incarnation of Trek should have had the "Reflection of Human Condition" or the grittiness in space. This was soon re-examined in the new Star Trek movie!

  • I recently downloaded the whole episode and most of the deleted scenes are from early in the episode. While the film quality is poor, since these are outtakes, it is very cool to see the 2nd pilot as it was originally shown. And without it, there would be no Trek.

  • Fascinating.

  • Interesting stuff, never seen this before.

  • Well is there more?

  • Very nice to see that. Very rare stuff.

  • This rough stuff is cool. You get to see,a work in progress.

  • WHAT?

    You sound like an idiot

  • So can you direct us to some of your releases? I'm sure we would all like to view an example of the greatness that oozes from every pore on your body.

  • ooooooze....stupid kid.

  • "George Takei as Ship's Physicist" so began Mr. Sulu.

  • SO WHERE ARE THE DELETED SCENES?

This was a total waste of time...This version has been known for quite a while!

    YOU WASTED EVERYONES TIME!

  • Awesome! I have never seen these clips before. Great clips in the beginning.

  • Holy mother, the intenste of action just makes me laugh this piece is better and more epic as all movies together and the series

  • Why Isn't This on DVD ? It would be Great if it Was.

  • Yeah I originally read there were some scenes cut from this and there were no plans to restore them. And then the season 1 DVD box set came in 2004 why didn't they include this in the speical features?

  • Thank god they made Star Trek the way it was and not like this. The origional pilot for Star Trek was released in 1964 with Christopher Pike in command. But not until 1966 that Star Trek made its stand.

This is true scifi. STAR TREK FOREVER!

  • Whatever happened to gary Lockwood? It seems he disappeared after "2001: A Space Odyssey".

  • Lockwood frequently shows up at Star Trek conventions and autograph shows. Doesn't draw much of a crowd but a nice guy.

  • I saw him at the 40th Gala event in Seattle

  • Really? LOL I was there too. I don't recall seeing him there. Not that that I'm doubting you. Just goes to show he doesn't draw a crowd.

  • He looked old and he took part in the last day play, he was that old guy who seemed grumpy

  • Good stuff. I'm glad they went w/ the now famous theme music by Alexander Courage and they dropped the 'Act" titles. It was a holdover from teleplays which were all over the tube in the early 60s. Quinn Martin shows kept them into the 70s I think. As well as the 'Tonight's episode...A Witches Brew" haha. Love it. Can still here William Conrad doin those!

  • no...it originated in theater.

Its amazing how many people on YouTube have no idea of what they're talking about.

This 'holdover' you're referring to is a direct grab from theater productions and were used on TV in the 1950's-1970's

  • Labeling the acts and putting up "tonight's episode" makes this whole thing seem ten years older than it is.

  • Seriously, thanks for sharing. I love Spocks pouty line in the turbolift about what Kirks move shouldve been. Priceless.

  • A friend told me that Lockwood also tried for the role of the captain. They chose Shatner but liked Lockwood and wanted him in the second pilot

  • Gary Lockwood was a hottie back then...

  • Thanks for the posting... Very interesting..

  • This version of the second pilot was officially submitted to NBC at the end of January 1966- and some changes had to be made before it went on the air the following September [time constraints and "fine tuning"], but some were due to NBC's censors {Kirk's line, "..but you may learn to enjoy it someday", was deleted for that reason}.

  • bad sound quality

  • i am glad that they went with the one that we are used to but I wished that they kept the intro. and some clips from this.

  • Hey, I saw George Takei and Jimmy Doohan listed in the credits, heh...

  • George Takei was one of a grpup of VIP's they brought on the bridge. You see him in the original aired episode. I don't remember seeing Scotty, maybe he was VIP.

  • Aaah, one of your human emotions. (CHEESE ALERT)

  • Yeah! Terrible having bad blood like that.

  • wow cool i have this on video tape, got from ST convention in the 80's. Now I have all 3 versions of this how. This one, aired one, and now the remastered one. All different and very cool. I burned this one 2 dvd and looks nice but the quality is soso but for a show of 42yrs I am pleased with it.

  • Was this included in the first season DVD set?

  • Unfortunately not, my friend. What I wish CBS Paramount would do is release the alternative version of this episode, or at least show the alternative scenes on the episode's DVD.

  • Thanks for posting. I didn't get the Quinn Martin connection, but now that you mention it...

  • This is great seeing this.Gene made the right choices in how the final show was edited-some of these clips made it look very cheesy and B-movie-ish more then people think it was.

  • Excellent, first time I've ever heard that ending theme, hope to find more out takes and deleted scene's as said its a pity they have never been collected and put onto DVD

  • Hi there, I got this show with all these scenes on tape from a convention in the 80's. I burn 2 dvd to save it for good and 2 add to my collection, nice touch 2 it.

  • As spock would say.. Fascinating! I read about that in the Star Trek compendium. They describe that alternate version of this episiode was in the style of the Quinn Martin series "The Fugitive' what with the prologue & epilogue & the four acts & the closing theme that was never heard from again. Glad you shown this version at last. It's a ahame they didn't include this version on DVD.

  • Outstanding reference dkuciemba. I was wondering if anyone would make the Quinn Martin connection.

  • Quinn Martin worked in theater for many years...that's where he got it.

    He didn't invent it...jeez.

    Youth is so special.

  • I don't think anybody's implying Quinn Martin INVENTED the concept of prologues, acts, epilogues etc. It's application to broadcast TV was a unique Quinn Martin device though, you swellheaded putz. You belong in Hollywood.

  • oh not unique at all...I know Quinn personally.

    'Putz'....thank you

  • Oh really...... Quinn Martin died in 1987. Should we change the tense on that to "knew" him? Make that puny putz.

  • ....listen nerd, go back to your blow up doll and sing her a love song....with PROLOGUES!

  • I think you Quinn Martin INVENTED the concept of prologues, acts, epilogues etc for tv series, but I'd bet he wasn't the first-too he was the last as far as I know. His tyle is missed-those kinda things made his shows unique.

  • THANK YOU! finally an intelligent comment without malace.

    THANK YOU MAVERICSTUD!!!!!!!

  • That is true. Quinn Martin started as a producer for Desilu and was one of the creators of "The Untouchables." His concept was to keep the show distinctive from the commercials by creating the "acts" and "epilog", taking the "play" in "teleplay" quite literally. He took the idea from the way in which live theatre dramas were broadcast in "The Golden Age" and it worked very well.

  • This was the original version of the pilot shown to NBC executives in late 1965. Then it was re-edited to fit the show's regular format (titles, opening, music, etc.) for the aired version (22 September 1966).

  • Did you notice how kirk and spock are in reversed positions inside the turbo elevator from the way they entered? But I love the camera followthrough from the turbo lift to the bridge. One of my favorite episodes - loved Sally Kellerman - so serious and professional.

  • I didn't like the beginning name/titles overlapping each other. They should have waited until one name had completely vanished before showing another in the opening credits. I'm glad the newer (actually used) formats did away with the use of "Acts."

  • Wow. I thought the first episode in the DVD set I have was the second pilot, but this looks like it belongs to a previous version I haven't seen. Or maybe it just seems that way because the titles are different and these are all cut scenes...?

  • Fantastic, Nice to see uncut footage of one of the best episode known.

  • thanks for uploading! ... as you note, this original version remains oddly overlooked. i'll cling to my old convention bootleg and bookmark this -- thanks again.

  • Thanks for this, that was great!

  • thanks for the great clip! been looking forward to seeing ALL the deleted and alternate scenes! why paramount never released this on dvd astounds me!

  • If there's more of this type of footage, please, post it!
