Led zepplin asked anyone to reply with a reason for a lock. I finish a knife on a strop. A knife needs to be sharp. Every slip joint ive sharpened on a strop folds. Reason found. Hi jankerson, thanks for the video and taking time. Spyderco locks arent as strong as cold steel ( i can fold my endura with my bare hands) but every other aspect is better than most brands
@bullseye0169 ill tell you who......... the type of person that takes a gun an shoots them self in the leg an looks up gritting their teeth an says............ that....didnt.....hurt
man for real if you wanna knife to do this he-man stuff get a fixed blade
Did you take the Manix 2 apart to see what failed in the lock? I figure it would be the plastic like material that holds the ball bearing which is also the mechanism that is exposed to unlock the blade. I own this knife. First impression is this knife is tough as nails. For the lock to fail like it did is concerning to me. You never know what task your knife will be called into service to accomplish and I would want a knife that will at the least, finish that task.
I like Spyderco products and own several of them, but I have to wonder: Why does it take someone on YouTube to find and expose a weakness of their product? Yeah, yeah, I know, someone will claim that they can't find every issue, but it's not like this is some complicated, extended, hard-to-reproduce thing being shown here. If they changed the Manix2 as a result of this failure, they should have found it and fixed it ON THEIR OWN!
I get it, it failed. But on the other hand a lock is not necessary on a knife! Locks are pointless if you use the knife correctly. Slip joints have no lock and I've never closed any on my fingers. I challenge everyone who reads this to reply a logical reason you need a lock on a folding knife that cannot remedied by a fixed blade.
@LedZeppelin13k7 You need a lock for stabbing-type cuts, where you insert the blade more or less directly in line from tip to pivot. Humans are also not perfect (other than you). It's possible to be using a sawing cut motion and accidentally withdraw the knife too much, then extend it again with the back of the blade against the material, which can close the blade on your hand. And it's not always legal or feasible to have a fixed blade on hand. There's just two reasons for you. That was easy.
@timtico Almost none. I don't see how it can be made any more clear: THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED OVER A YEAR AGO. Unless you're buying a secondhand used knife on eBay, you don't have anything to worry about.
@jankerson1 please answer this. so if i went out and bought any manix 2 it would be tweaked and ok? because i really want it and if so don't wanna worry bout this. thanks
@jankerson1 when you do tests like these and post them in a public forum where everyone can see, it keeps the manufacturers on their toes. Good job! BTW, do you know for sure that Spyderco made the necessary adjustment to the Manix after you informed them of the test results? Thanks:0)
@sturmgewehr70 The manix is an awsome knife. Did you see how easily in cut through the wood? ANY foldingknife will fail after a stress test like this. In short.....Use the proper tool for the job. any hard use jobs call for a good fixed blade.... Im just sayin!
@yoohoosk8r If a knife can bend 90 degrees without snapping then it wont hold an edge worrh a damn. Cold steel knives are designed more as tools than knives. That's why every single one I've seen has been beat to death and has a basically useless cutting edge. Kinda like a machete, only more pointless.
I want my knife to be sharp and stay that way. If I need a chisel or a prybar then I'll use something else, since folders shouldn't be used like that anyway.
@Mrbikerman Most Cold Steel knives use AUS-8 steel, a steel which pretty much all major knife companies use to some degree for their knives. If you think CS knives are designed as tools, then you'd probably think the same of a lot of high quality knives on the market, wether by SOG, Benchmade, CRKT etc. that use the same steel. While it's true that edge retention isn't one of AUS-8's strengths, it's not really bad at it either. It's edge sharpenability(you wanted sharp) is outstanding though.
when it already show blade play after abuse, means the structure already be somehow damaged, it is not valid test if do spine whack at this condition.
Spine whack and overstriking are considered abuse. When would you ever put any folder through hard enough conditions that you would need it to never fail a "spinewhack" test. Honestly I don't think the Manix 2 is billed as a heavy abuse folder.
@chewouch 154CM is awesome steel. The brittleness comes from tempering. Same with D2 steel. If it is over hardened to say 62 then it becomes brittle. Check out Jankerson1's hard use video on the griptilian which is also 154CM. He stands on that blade between two 2X4s and has a hard time breaking it. The scales break but the blade does not. The BM Axis Lock did not fail during the test and that knife only weighs 3.8 oz. compared to the Manix2 which weighs 5 oz.
@chewouch Boy it's been a long time since I posted here. I love 154CM actually, just hate S30V and D2 because of that brittleness factor; my favorite is VG-10, followed closely by 154CM/ATS 34 which I think is even better. The Buck CSAR is the knife you want for a badass blade. So is the ZT 0200 made of 154. Even the Buck with 420 and the Bos heat treatment, cannot be damaged (the CSAR); I've tried it in the field. Awesome knife.
If 154cm is brittle and not good for woodwork, what's it good for at all???
I'm serious...I hear the same thing about D2 and S30V. They're supposed to be the best steels in the world but yet they're brittle? I don't understand that.
I love spyderco! HOWEVER, as far as truly over-engineered knives I think cold steel rocks the house. Sure there are more expensive knives that may pass the same cold steel test but they are far and few between. OVER ENGINEERED is the key
Great video! I don't understand why people are disagreeing with your tests. When I buy a knife I want to know how much abuse it can take. I'll probably never beat on my knife that much, but if for some crazy reason I needed to, I'd like to know how strong it is so I don't end up hurting myself. I've never been a fan of the ball bearing locks and now I'm less of one. I really like this knife design but I'll need to see some real evidence that they fixed it before I buy one.
man lets assume you are driving your car 120 km/g and you switch in second gear , your engine blows up , that means you tested or you were driving your car ? NO you abused and destroyed it , what guaranty or insurance will assure you the money or the car back ? , thats what you did with the knife , why didnt you tested the tip on some type of skin , ribs or meat to see if it breaks , and what kind of normal use of the knife , makes you hit it from the other side to make the lock fail?
im a spydie fan and owner, but which ones, if any, might be considered for heavy use alike the CS lawman and recon 1? im planning on getting the AK-47 or Lawman but would like a heavy use Spyderco with strong tip and lock. any come to mind??
Cool video but I'm not sure I understand the relevance of it. I've never tried to hammer nails with the back of the blade on a folding knife so I can't see what those tests prove by hitting the back of the blade on the board. I ordered a Manix 2 last night and it looks like its GTG unless I try cutting down a tree with it any time soon.
I'm not putting it down but you could find a way to break anything mechanical if you tried hard enough.
I agree, but durability test are important to some poeple. You read threads about guys using a folder for the task an ax should be doing. It is nice to see a durability test but I think 99% of people will be opening envelops and cutting open boxes with them. I think people in general get too involved in how durable a knife is.. to me.. that is why they make fixed blades, saws and crowbars. Thanks for taking the time and resources to do the review though Jankerson1
@silverbulletmann its a stress test, cold steel knifes and take a spine wack test no fails no blade play, and they can hold over 300 pounds. they can stab thru car doors and even bend to 90 degrees without snapping. Cant say that for any spyderco knifes.
Dont get me wrong i love spydercos, but they aint that tough. they are just pretty.
Haven't planned on getting another Manix 2 unless one is donated to me like the 1st one. The blade is too short for me to buy for myself. The Benchmade was also donated to me and the guy wanted me to break it.
I didn't break the AL because it's my knife and I am not Noss4.
Jesus, the locks broken. Continuing to open it and smacking it again isn't going to change the results. Wow, some redneck benchmade fanboi broke a knife. Shocking.
I took mine and did a bunch of spine whacks with my brand new one the sprint run, granted i padded the blades back so I would not dammage it but it did not fail once. Seems they fixed it
Proof positive that locking knives aren't an acceptable substitute for a fixed blade, but rather a slipjoint with an extra safety feature. Some are stronger than others, and as such can withstand harder use, but no folding knife will ever be as strong as a fixed blade--that's just physics. It's interesting to see, none the less, what some folding knives can and cannot do relative to others. Somewhat disappointing, as this knife otherwise seems like a great value. Thanks for the test/video bud.
just because beat the hell out of the knife and it fails doesnt mean that it is a bad knife. The manix 2 is only a smaller folding knife and i find it a bit un called for the feel the need to beat it up. The manix is clearly not meant for that.
Tempting to quote on the Spyderco forum for the Kool-Aid drinkers to choke on.
Happily, I sold all my Spyderco's last year. They were mostly OK but the build quality just wasn't there even on the pricier carbon fiber Strech II and Manix 2 S90V.
Hey, Spyderco, just license the Axis lock, it works.
Very interesting to see, especially after seeing the Griptilian pass the spine whacks even after developing blade play.
Watching these videos, plus the AL video has created a conflict for me. I don't *want* to want any CS knives 'cause I find the man behind the company repugnant and I don't want to put any money into his spandex pockets.
On an unrelated note, that Off Clip On is excellent, isn't it? If I go outside late at night or early in the morning without mine, I get chewed up.
@CanItAlready Lynn C. Thompson is the most digusting person I've ever seen. He has no respect for the animals he kills, and does it for fun. It's horrific, I can only pray that he soon gets eaten buy a predator while on safari.
These test are great and very valuable. I was actually thinking about getting this knife but am now crossing it off my list. Point in fact I was not thinking about a cold steel product but now I am re-evaluating that decision. Thank you for doing these. It is a real service.
Interesting, not things I would do with a folding pocket knife but glad to know the limitations of one example. A tool for every purpose and a purpose for every tool.
Ull never use that knife for that kinda shit its a damm nice knife

Great test! I have the same knife and it's great to see what the limits of this is. Thanks for the test!

Thanks for the comment. :)
Oh yeah the Off Clipon is awesome, it keeps me from getting eaten alive when I am outside. :)

@jankerson1 Can you do one on the Buck CSAR-T?

Interesting, not things I would do with a folding pocket knife but glad to know the limitations of one example. A tool for every purpose and a purpose for every tool.

Bias not based in reality? Check.
You clearly are a mindless fanboy.
I exclusively collect Spyderco, but have a few Cold Steels, and I know their stuff. Cold Steel makes the most solid production knives on the market.

Cold steel makes the most solid production knives on the market, they only have on fatal flaw tho,, the name they bare.

I have recently been inclined to start purchasing fixed blades/ slipjoints exclusively. I have not been satisfied with any lock I have tried.

I would like it better if it had a Flat Ground blade with a thicker tip. But it's not my knife so what can I say.
