In Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time TAS runs, Link is usually made to run backwards in large areas because it's faster as well. An unintentional inclusion by the programmers.

Actually, doing a backwards jump right as the level begins gets you a slight speed boosts and saves you some frames. Otherwise, yes, after that it serves no purpose.

TAS's are indeed theoretically possible, but they're infeasible for the human player due to an emulator's ability to abuse luck by rapidly resetting the game tens of thousands of times (a human player would break his console if he tried that), and the pixel-perfect accuracy required to abuse many of the glitches shown in the video.
