"And what exactly is a dream? And what exactly is a joke?"
I think those sad, sad word capture a state clinically called "anhedonia," It's the flattened affect you see in people on the schizophrenia spectrum and with severe depression. They are unable to feel joy and can't tell a "smile from a veil" or a "green field from a cold steel rail."
My take is that he probably had schizophrenia triggered off and worsened by hallucinogenic drugs. I also suspect he was already predisposed to it.
What troubles me is, lots of people continue working as artists, rock stars, actors, who have schizophrenia or manic depression ( the artistic world is full of people who are under treatment for these problems) - why not Syd? According to his sister Rosemary, he was never treated for any mental illness, which makes me suspect that he never had a mental illness, but suffered some brain damage that was untreatable. It's so sad, such a terrible loss of a beautiful and talented young person.
@musicartism probably suffered from ether Schizoaffective disorder or Schizophreniform disorder both of which are not caused by narcotics but can quicken on set if the individual is predisposed . He also could have had a cluster A type personality disorder such as schizoid where the individual both lacks or desires social contact ether way he would not have been considered insane bar short episodic bouts of psychosis ,which in his case i think is rather doubtful certainly in his later life
Syd Barrett certainly looks the classic rock star here - but, not feeling it. I don't blame him for getting disillusioned with the music industry, and walking away from it all. Syd seems to me to be a pure artist, only interested in developing his craft, and not prepared to sacrifice it for money. No one should go onto a stage and mime, there's someting incredibly fake and dishonest about it, and I'm sure that's what pissed Syd off big time.
OK, I've done some reading and I thought I'd share my findings. Both the Greeks and the Hebrews considered red to be a symbol of love as well as a symbol for sacrifice. In Christianity, red is the liturgical color for the feast of martyrs, representing the blood of those who suffered death for their faith. And lastly, red is used in most national flags as a symbol of blood, sacrifice, and courage of those who defended their country.
@QuantumLeap365 The Aztec culture used to paint thier sacrifices red. Syd Barrett was a genious. He knew what he was talking about when others just didnt get it
@danid781 Thanks! I agree, every great piece of art has it's exoteric and esoteric interpretation, it's just most people don't care to look deep enough to grasp the full meaning.
They used to dress sacrifices in red, so the line" Im grateful that you threw away my old shoes and brought me here instead dressed in red" represents the band getting rid of him as a sacrifice for thier success. and my old shoes means him and his ideas
@danid781 I'm glad I read your comment, it's very insightful. I'd be interested to know who used to dress sacrifices in red though. I assume you are talking about some ancient culture?
"It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here, and I'm most obliged to you for making it clear that I'm not here...."And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes and brought me here instead dressed in red. And I'm wondering who could be writing this song"
These lines sound pretty sarcastic to me. They show an isolated Syd but this song isn't about schizophrenia, contrary to popular belief.
Like Nick Mason said in the documentary -The thing about Syd, he stopped enjoying it! He just had lost interest in it! And it was a ever declining interest and enthousiasme, that's the unraveling, the rest of the band were absolutely ought to do it Syd underwent subconscious crysis , that this wasn't art, it was becoming so commercial with television and record sales and promotion and so on, and hewas had been an art student, and that just meant that, that not want he really wanted to do!
Poor old Syd is telegraphing to the audience that due to his high-flying and exotic antics he is being politely resigned from the band (and shortly from life in general). This is about January 1968.
even though Syd Barrett had his place in history being one of awesome singers for Pink Floyd I still have to say that David Gilmour is still is one of awesome singers but I'll also still give Credit for Syd too so no one comes after me
It's too bad Syd Barrett was so fucked up on drugs. He played such great music with Pink Floyd and he had to throw it all away with his bizzare and weird behaviour.
well, this song and syd barrett in this clip are a little higher than high. his stare scares and hypnotizes me at the same time. its very enigmatic because he didnt go completely crazy but moved to a weird zone which is neither sane nor insane
this song is the law, Pink Floyd is a great band! :D Jugband Blues and another songs are inspirations. songs with her psychodelics sounds is perfect to me.
pink floyd and many other bands in the day had meaning and soul in their music. hopefully you enjoy the music. they were brilliant... this is music. not "yo yo i got money ima fuck some bitches yo"
haha no. I hate rap and hip hop. And I'm pretty young, I'm 13, I do love a lot of the music from the 60s and 70s. So yes, when I have a little more time, I have like a thousand bands I wanna check out, including this one :]
@AnneWorld You owe yourself to check out Gentle Giant and Frank Zappa. Go see a video of "Free Hand" from Giant, it is one of the most accessible songs they have made, if you like it, take a dive and you won't regret it.
I believe Sydfan is referring and possibly poking fun at is the urban legend that McCartney died before Sgt. Pepper's was released (fueled by the fact that Paul is facing the wrong way on the cover of that album, and has no shoes on in the cover of Abbey Road, etc.) and replaced by a lookalike.
thats what i said.. i think he was looking on wiki or something and found it out and was like "omg i gota let ppl know maybe they will think i know something and give me a thumbs up
for those that dont know...this song i syd's last realization of what was begining to happen to him...he was suffering from schizophrenia...and it only got worse
might be about his dead friend Paul McCartney, w/Syd as narrator saying things dead-Paul might say in the first part of the song. Sea isn't green might be a response to yellow submarine(sea of green, sky of blue...) - the queen could be referring to paul. Dressed in red, might refer to covered in blood upon his entrance to the afterworld. And the beatles never made it clear that Paul wasnt there....so being most obliged would be a very sarcastic lyric.
too much lsd doesnt mean he was schizophrenic at all.
lsd overuse doesnt bring out any condition in particular but he did become very ill nonethe less.from what i read from his book is his so called friends gave him shitloads of acid constantly and ruined him
this is one of the best lyrical songs ever written...syd covers such intense themes in this one song....depersonalization anti-materialism derealization...his genius is redic
ive always loved the last lines on this track...what exactly is a dream? What exactly is a joke? that summs up this song. it summs up his carreer with pink floyd because by this point u probably couldnt tell if he was crazy or brilliant and i think this illustrates even he knew that its fucking brilliant!!!!!!
This was one of Syd's last great tunes before is songwriting became to chaotic/unitelligible...He doesn't look to happy.Looks like he is just trying to get through it all...Nick looks depressed, Roger definately looks pissed-off and Rick just shakes his head as if to say this is insane...
You can tell that they were all going through a bad time to to Syd's breakdown.....
If you look at this music as a parody of his life, syds "friends" are more than willing to help syd descend into his own created mess, i dunno maybe im wrong but surely there was something these "sane" friends of his could have done to help, from the outside dont they just look really selfish? Or maybe just deluded.
It was a much different time as far as psychology and drug abuse was concerned. They didn't really know the full extent of the effects of psychoactive drugs back then. Too bad because he probably would have written alot more good music.
yeah even though you can tell Syd is very unenthused and that the problems were catching up to him. it's really like forshadowing footage if you ask me
Greatest Barrett ever...Like all heroes and myths, he was like a bright mesmerizing shooting star...He left his mark and then vanished as fast as he came...He vanished but he did not disappear...Shine on Syd...
Wise up! Great as Syd was, the Floyd couldn't carry on with him after his Acid trip which altered his personality, listen to the song he wrote after it, called VEGETABLE MAN, its all about him.
I don't care about the other members of Floyd. And I hate them in some way..
I just don't like how they took Syd away, but used his image for the band's mythology, and how they talked about him in interviews... like he was a poor mad man, and nothing else.
best song on the album

ive always loved the last lines on this track...what exactly is a dream?

SchwagmasterJT 2 years ago 2
true but would he have written songs like this without the drugs? swings and roundabouts.
oshi1986 2 years ago
I really doubt it. It's just that fine line between genious and insanity. Some people can walk it longer than others.
SchwagmasterJT 2 years ago
i dont think his mind would have opened up enough for music like this, without psychoactives. LSD really makes you think. a lot.

This is the studio version of the song, not the actual performance. The footage is mixed with the studio version, just thought i'd point that out.
TWern9 3 years ago
yeah i notice, the actual performance still is really good too :P
Malachi01 3 years ago
yeah even though you can tell Syd is very unenthused and that the problems were catching up to him. it's really like forshadowing footage if you ask me
TWern9 3 years ago
yeah that's what makes it obvious it is not
the actual live performance...even though I could tell right at the beggining when the music started...any pink floyd fan would notice that :P

Greatest Barrett ever...Like all heroes and myths, he was like a bright mesmerizing shooting star...He left his mark and then vanished as fast as he came...He vanished but he did not disappear...Shine on Syd...

Wise up! Great as Syd was, the Floyd couldn't carry on with him after his Acid trip which altered his personality, listen to the song he wrote after it, called VEGETABLE MAN, its all about him.
bluesbrother37 4 years ago
Saying this, I'd like to add that I love "The Wall".
1jourenfrance 4 years ago
Syd was the greatest of them all.
I don't care about the other members of Floyd. And I hate them in some way..
I just don't like how they took Syd away, but used his image for the band's mythology, and how they talked about him in interviews... like he was a poor mad man, and nothing else.
I think they did not show enough respect.
The end.
