I love football and rugby. Football can teach rugby a thing or two in terms of strength and speed. But rugby can teach football in terms of endurance conditioning. Combine the size, strength, and speed of American football with the endurance capabilites of rugby and you're going to be tough to beat by anyone. I really hope to see US rugby blow up big time here in the states!
I can just imagine the US becoming a force in rugby and then creating their own rugby terminology that no one else outside of America would be able to understand lol. They are probably doing that already.
I'm from the U.S. and I love Amercian Football but then i hate it because all I can think about is if we didnt have football we'd have all of these amazing athletes at our disposal for rugby...DOWN WITH THE NFL!
@Bruinsfan54 oh for sure...when i watch nfl football (which is rare,to fuckin stop/start for me!), i look at the size, speed, power of these players...its fuckin scary!!...if only they played league/union...the U.S would be a powerhouse...i hope to see it one day!!!..and im a true blue aussie! :)
@geezyoursoft I think that people here are so used to the short exciting plays of football that they wouldnt be able to sit through a whole rugby game haha, before i knew the game well i though the play in between the big hits and the big runs were so boring but now i appreciate the small stuff alot more
@profootball2334 Rugby is far, far more physically demanding than football. Two straight 40 minute halves without a break, i'd love to see nfl players do that.
the sleeping giants of world rugby! Seeing how passionate Americans are about their sport, I can't wait for rugby to grow and become popular in the US; and this is coming from a New Zealander.
@jackalan88 I cant agree with u more! The sad thing is it isnt easily accessible here in the states, I wouldnt know about the sport if it werent for my best friend playing for Cal State Berkeley. People here love there football too much, but, I REALLY hope that changes soon, cuz Rugby players are TRUE athletes!! Character, humility, and sportsmanship all wrapped into one amazing sport!!
whys everyone hating on the workout, its not designed to be lifting heavy weights it looks like an inseason session keeping the core nice and strong. its pretty hard lifting maximally all the time when u have team sessions, conditioning sessions and not to mention getting beat up on game days. anyone who has played rugby at a half decent standard will know this, the real heavy lifting and gains are left for the off season!
@ollymeadows OH lunge and woodchop aside there are is no core exercise here. The squats are half squats (at best) and why would you ever bench on a swiss ball. Squat and jump pairing was good, thats about it. This training is all to common in professional rugby now, the USA should look to the kind of coaches some NFL players are working with, the drugs aren't the only reason there are 19 stone guys with 60 inch vertical jumps.
all this training is functional for rugby, fair play to the americans...well conditioned, you retards dont have a clue about strength and conditioning so shut the fuck up
@HIGGSER94 I hate the way youtube is an oportunity for guys who havent fucking clue what theyre talking about to go on a rant about something that isnt even true or makes sense..
"Rugby World Cup matches will be broadcast on US network television for the first time after the International Rugby Board announced that NBC Sports and Universal Sports have been awarded the exclusive rights to the 2011 tournament in New Zealand and the 2015 tournament in England. " - When the sport grows in the US so will the talent.
I have alot of respect for rugby players. I wrestle actually. And its alot the same. Not much support, no pay, and much harder training and competing than any other sports because they love it. Go Rugby! Go Wrestling!
strength for rugby is in the core, and the heart! its not all about strength, if you increase your anaerobic, your aerobic abilities go down. Remember its a game of 40 minute halves. Marius pudzinowski plays rugby, super strong no aerobic ability. Good on you USA.
@irimanan27 For a man of Pudzinowski's size, his aerobic ability isn't that bad. Indeed it's this superior aerobic ability that sets him apart from other Strongmen, who couldn't run the length of themselves.
if these guys are pros shame on them. get a new coach quickly. his squats dont come the whole way down either, trust rugby coaches to do that, burst that ego quick and do it properly cheating with technique makes you lift more weight but the end results will be mising. nice db press on the ball though
no its not you fucking moron...it doesnt make it a better work out because it is more difficult to do...better workouts consists of triggering different musles and muscle contractions..not simple because its "harder to do" ..if i were to invent a workout...lets say running while doing bicep curls..would they be better for my biceps?! ITS HARDER TO DO! see..u fucking idiot...
@lithium687 you're right it does make it harder, restricting the amount of weight the athlete can rep and thus not giving him the best chest workout he can get. however, the ball isn't there to enhance the chest workout. the ball under the upper back leaves the athlete's hips and core unsupported. in rugby you will rarely make a max effort of strength without having to engage the core, as in a standard bench press. this allows players to familiarize themselves with engaging both simultaneously.
would be awesome if america really did get big into rugby. With the athletes that america produces through college etc they would have an incredible team. Its supposed to be the fastest growing sport in america at the moment so here's hoping some day it gets really serious there
U know people like u, who talk so much shit, THINKING ur smart, are the ones who are a complete dumbass, like yourself!! Iraland inst that great but without Brian O'driscoll they would be Trash.
thats bullshit and you know it. True, BOD is a great player, but rugby is huge over here and we produce some damn fine players especially for a country of our size where rugby isnt even the dominant sport. O' Driscoll didnt win the Six Nations, Heineken Cup and grand slam in one year by himself. Ireland is no.5 in the world rankings, one man cant do that.
DUDE y did u reply 2 MY comment? What's bullshit is, deep down inside u know that without Brian O' Driscoll, ireland, and leinster would be trash. I bet u didnt know that Leinster needed brian o' driscoll so bad in one game that they made him play when he only had 40%-60% vision in his right eye. Leinster didn't trust a younger backup player to play in his spot. Now u know that's shitty.
how many times have nfl players play with serious injuries. Thats called being highly competetitive, not shitty. end of story. The entire northern hemisphere knows that Ireland is a good rugby team.
there r a lot of nfl players that played wit serious injurys.. 1 is fromer eagles runningback Brian Westbrook so dont make this like nfl football players r weaker than professional rugby players because thats not ture. at least learn how to spell before you start criticising other people's efforts in rugby. a true sign of loving a game is competing even though you know you probably wont win...yet. america is developing its team, making big progress. do you think Irish rugby was always in this good of a shape. ask your da how many rugby match's ireland would have won in the 80's and 90's. and stop using LIKE at the start of a sentence, it just makes you sound like more of a tool. trevor, ireland

ohh what an example, come to Argentina, rugby is amateur and still achieve 3rd place at the rugby world cap in france and get the chance to play the four nations, thats playing for the nation
Rugby is an up and comming sport in the U.S. I think you foreigners need to maybe get a clue before you comment on another country's "sports heritage" or tradition. you know NOTHING. we have other sports our kids play from a young age (basketball, football, hockey) hence, why we excel internationally in all of those sports. except football cuz its not international. Ever hear of Olympic Gold Medals??
These guys get paid less than $150 a day. Many started playing rugby in later life, never having the resources given to them from "power house nations". They go months on end without seeing there families, staying in shity hotels, and training harder than any professionals. Why? Because they love the game, and everything it represents. Sad we cant support them, but then again most of you guys who have commented are NOT working out, but jerking off to You Tube!
sure, with my dad, but yours likes to play around with Samoa rugby team, and by the way, for you and all the other pussys around here: learn how to take a joke without being ofensive, and now, go back to your room and play nintendo

What is this? A stabilization workout? He's depowered all the lifts except the squat, which makes it pretty much useless for rugby. This doesn't seem to have much game application either.. If you are looking for a rugby program, you can find better ones via a google search. This can't be a NATIONAL level schedule - or at least not 1 an inseason or offseason schedules... at least I hope not. If it is, it may help to explain the recent drop in the US's world ranking, though.
its not a bad workout at all and probably isnt the only workouts they do just one type of one they probably have other rugby specidic workouts that they arent showing here but its necessary for a rugby player to lift as well you are just criticising for the sake of criticisising
yes is it a stabilization workout. You see how much they engage the core in all the work out they do, swiss balls, rotating shrugs etc. like richie said im sure its not the only workout they do depending on their schedule. Although are you aware of the importance of core in the game of rugby. You look at a player like Robinson, not huge in the upper body, but its from the core where hes able to take and break tackles and keep that low center of gravity
hey i play semi-pro rugby in england and it is indeed a stabilization workout! these are often used in-season at my club because the loading of the lifts can't be near maximum otherwise we don't fully recover by game day. core training is of most importance in season but they would still do other stuff life olympic lifting, plyos and maximum strength work but these are not the main focus as in the off season or pre season because of the demanding schedule of games anyway. hope that helps a bit
oh god, I felt the pain of those explosive jumps after those brutal squats. your legs get so lactic and you feel like you got nothing left but you keep going because you got something that drives you to push yourself to the limits.
The US has a huge population and an amazing college system for developing athletes. They'd be great at any sport they took seriously.

TZfootball07 2 years ago
you excel in those sports because youre the only ones who play them. one thing yanks are good at is athletics

If it is, it may help to explain the recent drop in the US's world ranking, though.

its not a bad workout at all and probably isnt the only workouts they do just one type of one they probably have other rugby specidic workouts that they arent showing here but its necessary for a rugby player to lift as well you are just criticising for the sake of criticisising
richiespice10 2 years ago 4
that first bit is a warm up i think, One of the guys was wearing blocks for lineout lifting,
llewsedwod 2 years ago
yes is it a stabilization workout. You see how much they engage the core in all the work out they do, swiss balls, rotating shrugs etc. like richie said im sure its not the only workout they do depending on their schedule. Although are you aware of the importance of core in the game of rugby. You look at a player like Robinson, not huge in the upper body, but its from the core where hes able to take and break tackles and keep that low center of gravity

you know what your talking about.
Brigidare 2 years ago
hey i play semi-pro rugby in england and it is indeed a stabilization workout! these are often used in-season at my club because the loading of the lifts can't be near maximum otherwise we don't fully recover by game day. core training is of most importance in season but they would still do other stuff life olympic lifting, plyos and maximum strength work but these are not the main focus as in the off season or pre season because of the demanding schedule of games anyway. hope that helps a bit

oh god, I felt the pain of those explosive jumps after those brutal squats. your legs get so lactic and you feel like you got nothing left but you keep going because you got something that drives you to push yourself to the limits.
yeah I got carried away there, nice video
