They were both Jatt and Muslim, we have to remeber at the time the story was written most ppl in the Punjab were proabaly Muslim, But could still be a Jatt, we just like to assume these days that all jatts are Sikh, but thats not true there are still a great many number of Muslim Jatt families in the punjab of Pakistan, as evidence in their last names, that overlap the religions, but one thing is for sure WE ARE ALL PUNJABI.

ok heres how ppl can be Jatt and not a Sikh, Your blood is Jatt, your culture is Panjabi and Muslim or Sikh was a CHOICE in religion, My name is Amit Sahi, I am Jatt Sikh Punjabi, but there is a greater number of Sahi's who are Jatt Muslim Punjabi, just like you will find names like Cheema, Bains, Bhullar, Dhaliwal, Sidhu, Gill and many more you recognize, these are all prominent jatt name regardless if they are Muslin or Sikh, they are Jatt's none the less.
