Ok I have a question. I always assumed that an electron does have a definate orbit, but because we cannot visually observe it we treat it like a probability so it is easier to plug in mathematical equations. But your saying this as if it is a literal thing. so which 1 is it. Is the Universe really made up of cryptic "everything is everywhere" mumbo jumbo? Or is this just an easy visualization that scientists use so they can work with atoms?

Good vids, but questions about the atomic weight: If it is a weighted average of the different isotopes, with weightings based on each isotopes abundance on Earth, then:
1. How can such an accurate number be useful when surely the abundance of each isotope on Earth can surely only be roughly estimated?
2. Is the weighting based strictly on Earth abundance, no more? And does this include Earths atmosphere as well?

@kabilan83 I knew someone would pick me up on that... I was coming at the subject from a quantum physics route (understanding atoms, particles, quarks, bosons etc.). I don't get some of it. Can someone explain in more detail how they know they can't cut an atom if it's an abstraction and we can't really 'physically' observe it (i mean, take a picture)? By what means do we 'observe' an atom if we can't see it?

this introduction is awesome, sal tells you in the beginning that viewing the electrons as a particle can be misleading. in middle school we were taught that electrons are particle that spin around the nucleous, and that electricity is due to their mouvement from one end of the metal to the other, and then when studying quantum mechanics, they basically tell you that electrons are like waves, they perform quantum jumps, only have a probability of being some place...the subatomic world is crazy.
