I love them SO MUCH. They are such genuine, caring, wise, and talented individuals. Hearing Alex Lifeson talk about meetin Jimmy Page was the cutest thing! :')
Watch... at 2:54 when George asks if they had a plan for their success, it appears that Geddy senses a funny quip from Alex because he starts to smile before Alex relies "Exactly." I thought that was cool.
Somebody please tell me what Alex said at 5:18 after Geddy said "we still feel like outsiders". He said "just don't call us-something?" I couldn't hear him.
The one thing that annoys me with Neil is that he seems full of himself. Rarely does interviews (and when he does it's almost never with Ged and Alex), claims he "doesn't care what people think" (total BS, everyone cares), and just generally has this snobbish air about him like he's trying to be some kind of Randian hero. It's kind of ridiculous and immature.
@ajl22586 Neil is not full of himself I have met the guy once he is really a down to earth guy. He developed this anti interview if you will after his wife and daughters death in a span of 3 months. He has never been comfortable with the folks who act like fans.
@ajl22586 He use to do them with Alex and Geddy all the time until he lost his wife to cancer and then a few months later his daughter in a car accident. It took him a few years to find his way back from that and the band decided at that time Alex and Geddy would do the interviews so he didn't have to constantly get asked questions about the losses in his life. He's recently been doing more interviews and when that question comes up quickly change the subject on the interviewer.
RUSH is not only an awesome band, but also a group of free-thinking, criticial, sensitive, funny, inteligent and brave people that has shown to many of us that its worth staying true to your ideals. My favorite musicians and people on the face of earth!
These guys are always so spectacular. Still holding down the fort and fighting the good fight for all that is right in music. On a side note: It's a sad commentary when Ozzy Osbourne is better known in a lot of circles as some sort of reality TV tool and not the great front man of Black Sabbath.
I AM FROM Detroit AND RUSH WAS LKE A BAND THAT WE FELT LIVED RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER-AND NEAL SHOPPED AT A DRUM SHOPPE IN FORT WAYNE..SO DETROITERS FEEL CLOSE TO THIS BAND-THEY CAME HERE ALOT BACK IN THE 70'S MICHIGAN PALACE,COBO HALL,MASONIC AUDITORIUM-MC MARREN AREA IN PORT HURON GOOD BAND VERY HUMBLE BUT I KNEW THEY WOULD GO FAR STAYING PROGRESSIVE AND DOING THERE OWN THING I SAW THE CARESS OF STEELE TOUR,2112,FAREWELL TO KINGS,HEMISPHERES,PERMANENT WAVES TOURS (LOL) THEN COLLEGE:o)
They went to my high school and Getty was my partner in gym for square dancing and health class he sat beside me but I know he wouldn't remember me, ha, ha...
My typing teacher was the mother of the original drummer, John Rutsey, she was sad that her son was playing in a band that was playing in Yorkville and not going anywhere....boy was she wrong.
They played at the 'drop in' Friday nights at my high school & local spots.
They went to my high school & were in the same classes. His grandmother couldn't say Gerry in English very well, sounded like 'Geddy'. Hence his name.
They were just regular guys hangin' out.
The original drummer John Rutsey left the band: then their real journey started!!!
I saw them for free growing up and just a couple of years ago actually paid scalpers over a hundred bucks for a ticket.
Rush and George Stoumboulopoulos.. the two best things about Canada. Now if they were talking to eachother while passing around a puck, it would be even better.
@MeYouView By people you mean you? With 40 million album sales and one of the most popular and recognized festival headliners people do get them. So if you don't like it that's ok, to you it may seem crappy and yes good and bad is a personal concept but when you live in a demmocracy you're tied eternaly to the majorities veredict. THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN BITCH!
@MeYouView What?..you can't change your argument like that; they ARE one of the biggest rock n roll acts and one of the highest grossing touring artists and festival headliners, FACT, and that IS of today..."nostalgic fool", BITCH PLEASE!
@MeYouView Dude, it's obvious that you have no ear for good music...go listen to your gay ass screamo/emo/punk/pop/rap/autotune/newwave/alternative/grunge crap you kids today call music
@dick91p I agree with you. This George guy is just a crony or puppet it is a shame to have great guess like that and not even ask one intelligent question. That's why I don't watch his show anymore especially after watching his documentary love, hate and propaganda. He only told half truths on that program it was very disappointing but, to be expected the corporate media doesn't want to or won't tell us the real truth.
Its not so much Neil is avoiding interviews, its just he lives in LA now and this interview was filmed in Toronto. Niel has always been more private and has often let Geddy and Alex handle that aspect of it.
That would be the ideal...yet the press is the press (Paparazzi) And They will dig to China if they can on anyone or thing. And I believe, being in the business for so long, Neil knows it and fades back a bit in regards.
If you guys have ever studied Neil's lyrics, you know where his influences in objectivism come from. I'm no disciple of anyone, but I'm running a congressional campaign that will be based on those same philosophies. I'd be much obliged if you'd all critique my video's for my campaign.
PS I also put a few of my old guitar solo's in there for you.
@2112murphy I'm pretty sure that was a big factor in his avoiding interviews. I remember reading that interviewers would frequently ask him about his late wife and daughter, and to avoid having to bring back hard memories, Alex and Geddy stood in. It's a shame, really. I'd love to see more of him in interviews...
What is with Neil? Does he just not participate in the talk show thing? Prediction: Ben Foster, not Bono will play Geddy Lee in the movie about Rush. I was convinced that they play the same set every night of every tour. Were they indicating something different? These 2 ain't outsiders. Maybe Neil is. Guys with families who compost are not outsiders. Amazing how powerful these guys are but they seem like Buddhists from Northern California. Really nice people. They are very together and sane.
I love the overwhelming welcome the audience gives these two guys...if you watch the other interviews on this show, the audience does not clap or cheer as loudly.
I bought my first album when I was 16 now I'm 18 and I have just about every song of theirs on my ipod and listen to them everyday. People think i'm weird

@Dthorn912 never care what ppl think of it... I was 12 with ELP on my Walkman and I didn't care who thought what about it. 26 years later, I got an mp3 player full of Rush, ELP, King Crimson, etc and it's all good!
You do realize that Neil lives in California, while Geddy and Alex live down the street from each other in Toronto...? I'm sure for Neil to be with the other two for all their interviews and stuff would be annoying for him. Neil does do interviews and appearances on shows, just not the same ones usually. why is Neil Peart never at interviews? I mean I know before it was because of his tragedy that he suffered but hes remarried now and is expecting a child. I WANT TO HEAR HIM TALK
I wonder if Alex's inspiration to have the moustache briefly was from Keith Richards in Pirates Of The Caribbean III. Richards did keep the moustache for awhile and then shaved it off.
Neil Peart doesnt like doing interviews because after his wife and daughter died he didnt want to do interviews because he was afraid that someone would ask him questions about it and he just doesnt want to talk about it.
Peart is not shy, he just likes keeping to himself most of the time. Check this vid out if you want to see him joking around: "Neil Peart On The Rick Mercer Report" : watch?v=mNFz74nHw4Y
What did Alex say that was edited out @ 5:20 & got a pretty good audience "whoop?" Must've been a swear word? Obvious splice there & I can't figure it out. Re "Just don't call it ****?" About being outsiders?
They grew into their songs because they are timeless and speak a universal truth: specific or broad ideas, sentiments or emotion. Every song by RUSH is hand crafted.
Keep dreaming. Alex is an incredible, incredible guitarist, but he's not the best. Clapton and Page are legendary. I think even Alex would admit that.
I would put David Gilmour and Alex above Clapton and Page in terms of their sheer originality in terms of concept and execution with their guitar-scapes.
For anyone who doesn't understand why so many of us love these guys, they need to watch this video clip. A quick history of the band, a complete, yet brief history of the bands many MANY achievements, and a look into their true musicianship and great sense of humor all tied up with a sense of humility and respect. What a great band and a great bunch of guys.
How come Led Zeppelin wasn't mentioned in that top 5?

Great interview. These two are awesome guys. So honest, modest and funny. True Canadians! :)

There is a degree of shyness to Peart.

are you crazy you krack pot neil peart is the best
animegoalie30 2 years ago
Neil Peart doesnt like doing interviews because after his wife and daughter died he didnt want to do interviews because he was afraid that someone would ask him questions about it and he just doesnt want to talk about it.

Yeah, I know too.

Neil has always been reluctant to interview, long before his wife and daughter died.

Thanks

He (Neil) is a private man. He isn't shy - just private. Unfortunately, that's a difficult thing to be when you're "in the "limelight""

i've heard he's a really shy person in front of the camera, so he tends not to do interviews.
titanflesh65 2 years ago
They grew into their songs because they are timeless and speak a universal truth: specific or broad ideas, sentiments or emotion. Every song by RUSH is hand crafted.

Imagine Alex in total ah of Page. uh someone should clue him in that he's 10 times better than his idol.
hkjonus 2 years ago 5
LOL. So true
biped19 2 years ago
Keep dreaming. Alex is an incredible, incredible guitarist, but he's not the best. Clapton and Page are legendary. I think even Alex would admit that.
captinjingles 2 years ago
I would put David Gilmour and Alex above Clapton and Page in terms of their sheer originality in terms of concept and execution with their guitar-scapes.

For anyone who doesn't understand why so many of us love these guys, they need to watch this video clip. A quick history of the band, a complete, yet brief history of the bands many MANY achievements, and a look into their true musicianship and great sense of humor all tied up with a sense of humility and respect. What a great band and a great bunch of guys.
