  • Surprisingly quick tips to enhance the photography website: phh.nn.cx

  • Cool video, thx for sharing. Nice corporate shots, I'll check for a DVD

  • Fantastic video! thanks for sharing it.

  • great lesson ....i love this

  • Ha Ha Ha ..he said HEADSHOT ! he must play a lot of counter strike. :)

  • Title should be *DVD uses player in Photography*

  • he said "sit down bitch"

  • watch my collection of portraits from cambodia - canon 7d and canon 50 D and nikon D300 S .Lenses used , canon 17-40 , canon 100 mm macro , canopn 50 mm 1.4, canon 70 - 300 mm .

  • Carrying a DVD player and using it for showing clients is an excellent idea. However, is it not better to carry the laptop instead, because not only you can show bigger picture to your client, you can also do some adjustments including clicking through the laptop. While you are carrying huge bags with lots of accessories to the client's place, laptop will take merely any noticeable space! What do you think?

  • Whoa I didn't know you could tether with a DVD, that is neat, was thinking to install Lr on my laptop. But yeah what cable did you use? Thank you

  • What type of cable is needed to plug the portable DVD player into the camera? Is there a need for an extra piece to make it work properly?

  • 5*****

  • Thank you David, that was helpful.

  • I like the portable dvd idea.

  • @Tstearns3 i don't see the reason for all this dvd/laptop thing anyway..

  • You know, i|I}f you're looking for}|wanting|in need of}| need| want} a good space to host your pictures, try w w w . freeimage house . com, that's the place I use|where I go to}. Cool vid!

  • Great info,,esspecially the DVD player tip. :)

  • why not just use a fuckin laptop man

  • i tried the dvd thing with the cables that was recomended and it didn't work for me on my Canon 50d and 20 d

  • Hi!

first at all: great job!!! :)

I just have a question: how did you set the camera for the executive portrait and for the enviromental portrait?

    thx a lot!

    cheers

  • holiday dating site # lushfmlk.info #

  • 2:55 minute, that's Luca Zanetti?

  • how can i connect my camera directly to view in my laptop?

    I have camera nikon D40X

    thanks

  • *jealous on the d3x* im using he d3000 and it kinda pisses me of that many of the cool things don't work with the d3000...... but for a students budget u can#t expect a d3x :) but nice vid anyway

  • @xphotosniperx Its actually D2X. D3X is a whole new camera compared to this.

  • what lens where u using?

  • look the best photography tips HERE: 8lRPKoK5sOc

  • Very helpfull, great video, thank you

  • your voice is so angry :)

  • @alz3eem400 lol

  • why u dont use a portable screen? XD

  • A good reason for the invention of the new iPad.

  • great but doesn't work for all DVD players....

  • Thanks for the dvd suggestion,

  • Thank You sooo much!!!

  • You might be able to use the new Apple iPad for a nice large screen instead of the DVD player screen? I'm pretty sure it has a port for this. At least that would be nice if it does : )

  • Awesome tips, thanks alot.

  • Great tips!

  • قرااار

  • Great photography!

  • ya i like the DVD idea i was using my 17'' laptop for this

  • Awesome! Love the DVD player idea!

  • Nice video, I like to know what kind of DVD player are you using? I have one but it does not work (it plays), I have a Canon Xsi.

    Thanks

  • Great video - like the mini DVD player as a preview. Gonna go pick one up now ... great idea.

  • If you like photography books go to ebay and type in Hastings Beautiful Town, it's excellent!

  • great video man. Nice results looks like loads of fun. thank 5/5

  • 2:05 your background light only fired twice with that man

  • That's the video... the flash is so fast that it exactly happens between the frames of the videocapture.

  • The flash was just way too short for the camera to capture.

  • Why do you have the camera so far away from the subject in the first shoots here?

btw, I am a portrait photographer and would really love to get out like you do---looks fun!

  • Lens....

  • Hey David. Great stuff and actually very inspiring! Your blog is also great. I've only just started blogging... Are you on twitter?

  • use a laptop......

  • im with you on this one... use a laptop...

  • @popleo123 Good idea.

    But not a notebook.

    Better a netbook.

  • @popleo123 they are so cheap for this :)

  • its a gud video; attaching portable dvd player idea was awesome.

  • Awesome photos... Nice capture of the mood.. I like to do this kind of photography a lot.. i need some equipments soon... SMALL STROBES BIG RESULTS...... really Informative. Thanks a lot for this video...

  • Nice video. Learn how EVDense Digital Diary can help you for FREE to protect your photographs by visiting our page.

  • Great video , never thought about having a portable laptop in my kit thanks for the advice , wish i could come to your work shop

  • Please watch and subscribe. I'm 17 and i have been told i have a gift with a camera. Photography is my life. So please help me live my dream. and support me God Bless.

  • If you listened he told the guy there would be a number of files and the guy could pick one and that the one he would work with. Executives don't care about your laptop, your software or your camera. They are interested in results. if your Phase 1 or laptop lock up on you in front of the client bad for you. Keep it simple

  • Thanks for this video. Too many people think they can watch a video and be an instant photographer. I think your portable DVD player is the best idea yet as we have used tv's before and had problems ( laying a tv on it's side for a full portrait view) . I am definitely getting a dvd player. Thanks again.

  • How do I hook up the DVD player. I put the chord in the video out on my camera to the video in on the DVD player. Can't get it to work. What type of chord do I need?

  • It should be the standard TV cable. Maybe its the DVD player? If the video out works on a tv it should work on a portable DVD.

  • hi i have a question ok how old where you when you wanted to do photography beacuse im 14 but i really want to be a photographer but i dont know if i am wasting my time.

  • any age, im 14, and im professional.

  • I am sure that we Have the Spot for this Phenomenal Talent at our Website, we would like for you to Join Us! Great Photographer!

  • Great idea with the DVD player!!!

  • which shutter speed and aperture did you use?

  • hey check out my photography oon my video :)

  • David, I've been following your work and have found your videos quite informative. I'm wondering what size grid you're using for your background light? Do you point the grid directly back onto the background or at an angle?

    -Steve

  • Why is it sometimes there's a flash and sometimes there's not? And where is the flash, is it on your camera or on the softbox? I'm just a beginner and just starting to learn photography thanks

  • Thaks for posting.

I have a Kodak EasyShare C613 and it doesn't fave that place to put that wire in to it.

  • Very limited in information. What lens did you use? How do you decide the distance for a portrait? Your flash didn't go off on most of those head shots of the executive. You could of shown us how the SB-800 actually was set and the angles for that particular setting at a whole conference table. Maybe next video you could teach us about Portrait Shots!

  • Very often flash can't be seen on video. Not because it didn't fire.

And it's not a tutorial for beginners - if you have any idea about photography - you could easily answer all your questions about lenses and angles by yourself.

  • Not everybody is a good teacher...here is a prime example...apparentley you made this video just to say that you made an instructional video. If you have to say something retarted like "if you knew anything about photography..." when your video is critiqued shows you aren't a teacher at all interested in the betterment of photographers at large. Just a jerk...

  • It's not my video... it does NOT say "instructional video"... all the useful information in it - is pretty clear... and calling people "jerks" just because they haven't explain everything in a way EVEN you could understand - is childish.

  • i don't know what you're talking about, not only does he give a good suggestion and show you how to hook up a monitor to the camera but he also shows how to use a grey card for setting white balance and also lighting equipment/modifier positioning. perhaps if you can't understand this video you're too new to the concepts and should revisit it once you have more experience? not all of the concepts in the video will by understood unless the viewer already understands mobile studio shots

  • You're right...he gave a great sales job for using a small DVD monitor. But other than telling us that he used a softbox, a SB800and an umbrealla he told us nothing of positioning these items or anything about setting white balance. The only thing he told in detail was how wonderful a portable DVD player was. If "YOU" were to search Youtube (as I have since done) for videos titled "Portrait Photography" you will find how even more lacking this video is in disseminating any usefull information.

  • This wasn't a video meant to show lighting technique because as YOU yourself have already stated there are a ton of videos out there doing just that (Mr. Tejada also has some if you take 2 seconds out of your apparently amazingly busy life to look around). The point of this video was simply to show a technique he himself uses & why he does so.

I apologize on behalf of the entire photographic industry since we don't seem to live up to your standards.

  • You're right, it wasn't meant to show lighting technique or give any information other than using a small portable DVD player. That's exactly what I said. Thanks for the confirmation. The video he called "Portrait Photography" has nothing to do with how to shoot portrait photo's...he could have been shooting anything. And I accept your apology for the entire photo industry if they'r all stupid a**h**** like you with your moronic reply and AGAIN nothing intelligent to add to the conversation!!

  • BTW...You certainly aren't the representatives of the photo industry by a long shot. There are actually videos out there called Portrait Photography that are about that subject. If you want I could send you the links. Remember that in America, if I don't like the movie I just watched I can and should say so, and I shouldn't have to be harrassed by the family and friends of the producer of the film. Grow up already...

  • hey, do you have eyes? Look at the video - you can see the positions of every tool he used... David is a great photographer and one of the few really professionals willing to share their knowledge. If you want more details, you have to visit one of his workshops. I can't understand that people often complaining for something free on the internet.

What you can see in short: Big Softbox to the right face-side, Bouncer to the left, flash as a background-light.

  • If you want him to hold your hand - ask him yourself and quit whining.

    Thanks.

  • Pretty amazing how many stuff he needs to make a photo like that .. i make this kinda photo's a lot! faster :/

  • Great training aid. Thanks

  • Mmm those portraits looked really super-corporate.

  • missfire

  • thanks

  • Sorry to ask this - but the images I am seeing here in the video are not particularly detailed. I am curious if you have a website where I can see the finished product of these not in a compressed YouTube video.

  • What is the pixel resolution of the DVD player you have? Does it give you a real crisp clear image?

  • im sure its not high res he just uses it to view a larger image. usually those things suck really bad but im sure is fine for this type of thing

  • David

Can you tell me the cable connections and is there any in camera setting that need to change? Does the DVD player have to have a video in? I have a D300 and would love to do this as the laptop is heavy and Camera Control is too slow.

    Thanks great videos.

  • hey what is a slr camera to purchase. Im just starting out my career in photography and i was wondering if you could give me some advice on that. It doesnt matter what the price is.

  • slr can range from $600 to $8,000. since your probably Going to want to go pro get a higher end DSLR. Check out the Nikon D300 the Canon EOS 50D or the Sony A700. depends what kind of photography. Lots of megapixels for portraits or landscape photography. Very fast shooting for action photography these can vary the price. Happy hunting.

  • I use the laptop for my lighting workshops, just find that a small devise works best and I like the fact that images are still saved to my cards.

  • @davidxtejada

what cable did u use to connect to your portable dvd player?

  • why dont you use camera control pro and connect it to a laptop instead of a dvd player

    thanks for the great video

  • No I did not

  • Did you bring the table with you?

  • what are your thoughts on the white balance? There would be at times 3 different light sources. Are you just taking a test of that gray card with all light into consideration at the point of the shot? most of the shots have a pretty warm background.

  • PocketWizard

  • May I know what kind of transmitter connected to that camera?

  • What is the best aperture and shutter-speed to get bedroom pictures like in pornography/glamour modelling? Somebody kindly answered me before but I lost the message.

I have two 500w tungsten lights but no reflectors--are these necessary? I was told also to use blue filters for these types of light, but all my experiments (for skin-tone on bed) are bad and still look like polaroids. Please someine set me right. Thanks.

  • You're an idiot. Ever heard of books?

  • Moron. If you've heard of books why not read that passage and help someone out.

You're obviously offended by sex which effects your personality. Anyone can ask a question on anything that has appeared in a textbook, and get help, and anyone below can be called an "idiot" for asking questions or even comng on this film.

You are a backwards individual and the only idiot.

  • But a laptop will work, right? Just need the cable? What is that cable called?

  • The guy at 4:03 seems the most relaxed and his smile appears quite natural. It's so difficult to smile on cue, especially in such a bland environment.

  • Also, this is alot cheaper than buying the specific cable from the camera company. I asked professional stores for cables for my Nikon and they pointed me toward Nikon's website. For 50$ I could have owned that cable...However, I spent 15 $ altogether on buying one cable and an adapter and I received the same result as the 50 $ cable. If you have any more questions on affordable equipment, simply message me and I'll be glad to help. I know some photographers hate giving their secrets away. Not me

  • For those of you who are wondering what cable to use in order to connect the camera and the portable DVD cable:

    1) 1/8" mono miniplug to RCA phono plug

2)Phono to 1/8" Radioshack Gold Series Adapter

    And that's it.

You can find the materials above at your local Radioshack.

As far as the DVD player, you would need a DVD player that has VIDEO IN. These are rare, but I manage to find one online at wal-mart. The brand is Real Digital.

Any more questions, message me and I can get into detail.

  • I really love the effect of the back-lit background!

  • nikon ftw!

  • Can anyone recommend a particular DVD player with a 'video-in' plug-in such as he's using in this video? I can't find a brand/model in anyone's responses. Thanks in advance.

  • I wouldnt trust the dvd player's colors or exposures of the image.

  • As much as i love digital photography...film photography is always more fulfilling in the end.

  • i agree

    p.s. lomo RULES!

  • Yes lomo does rule, which lomo cameras do you have?

  • lca+ and fisheye

  • Check this video out---Jason Photography shoot #1

  • Don't know. Take your DVD player, camera and cable with you. DT

  • Whats the name of the adapter?

  • Grate Photos. Also the idea of DVD player is brilant.

  • It's the cable that came with the camera. Go to Radio Shack to get the adapter to put them together.

  • whats the name of the cabel he use to connect the camera and the dvd?

    /Thanks

  • Wow! I like the video, I got a job! It's something like this, I have to take pictures for a calender. The pictures that I'm going to take are from the people working at a financial office. Something like that, the only problem is that I don't have any lights. The only think I have is a SB-600 with the off-camera cord. Got any tips? Thanks in advance:)

  • Great idea for the player, I use a 17 inch lcd monitor for portraits linked direct to the camera, its a bit cheaper than those dvd players over here.

  • the dvd player is a good idea

  • awsome thankyou for all your tips!love the dvd viewer!

  • I like that chick at 3:37....

  • He was shooting faster than the strobes could recycle.

  • He wasn't shooting faster than the strobes could recycle. The reason you're not seeing all the strobes fire each time is because the frame rate of this video is slow and doesn't capture the strobes going off every time.

  • No particular reason. Had them out from another location and just stuck with them. DT

  • for the environmental shoot, why didn't you just use the SB800 on CLS? instead of a pocket wizard?

  • I tried that and I can not get the DVD player to show the pictures

  • awsome thanks!! check out my vids..please

  • thanks very much. very informative.

  • Wow, that's really helpful... Thanks.

  • Thank you for the tips.

  • what lense do you have on

  • he's using a 80-200 f/2.8

    i think the IF-D model

    on a D2X body

  • Wow! Thanks! I did not know you can do that with a portable DVD player.

  • nice video

  • great tips

    robertgustafsonphotography. com

  • Thanks!

  • thanks for the tip!

  • Hey Tejada! Thanks. DT

  • Hey Tejada! Great tips! I've never thought about bringing a portable DVD to do this kind of pre-presentation. It's sure a great idea. (would save my back about 3Kg from my laptop)

    Greeting from another Tejada. ;)

    Gustavo Tejada.

  • thanx. great tutorial

  • whats a dvd

  • Cool! Great Tip!

  • I'm having a hard time finding AV IN on these little dvd players. I'll stick to the laptop for now. GREAT tip though, and less bulky for sure.

  • why a dvd player? A laptop would give you a much bigger image to evaluate.

  • he mentions the reason why he uses a dvd player is the bulk of a laptop. :-)

  • Great Video. could you use a laptop to show a bigger image

  • It would have to have a s-video inn, or another setup.

  • what brand of dvd player do you use, I tried this with my dvd player and the image was bad. Please advise. thanks

  • Thanks again David for sealing the deal for my purchase of a portable dvd player for the purpose of a camera LCD viewer.

  • Very good video. One of the best I've seen.

  • awesome tip!! thanks :)

  • Thats a fantastic tip, thanks for sharing it.

  • Well, well, well. A very good job indeed. Thanks for sharing David. But we want to see more.

  • Very good, thanks.

  • I would have never thought of using a dvd player VERY COOL IDEA!!

  • Very handy, thanks for the tips!

  • Thank you!!

  • nice idea, many thanks
