You are missing the point of what "universal value" means, unfairly restricting it to a contingent, subjective definition. That is an excellent point. People that believe we need a powerful state to supress liberties are a overwhelming majority. An example outside of Islam is Orientals. In those cultures loyalty, self sacrifice and duty is often valued over individual liberty.

I value freedom but those views were largely shaped by my upbrining, environment and the culture I was raised in.

u r right on some aspects. but the brits didn't end foreign trade just in africa they did that everywhere they went. why? that way they can capture local markets. therefore, that act is something that any empire would do, as shown by history. what u don't mention is that arabs, indians and others also traded for african slaves constituting well over the majority for african slave trade and also built empires in africa from time to time and acted like any empire would.i.e. swahili-mixed language)
