Well I'm not familiar with the comics. I never knew that Marvel made the comics so I can see where fans would have a problem with the changes. I used to watch the cartoon as a child. The cartoon had a simplified theme of good vs evil. From what I remember it wasn't exactly rich in story. Still, I enjoyed the movie for what it was with the exception of the actor who played Duke. I found his performance to be terribly weak at times.

The comics were much deeper. Snake Eyes didn't take a vow of silence, his face was scarred and his vocal chords were damaged saving Scarlett in a helicopter crash; Cobra Commander was responsible for the death of Snake's sister and parents in a car accident; both Firelfy and Zartan were hired by the Commander to kill Snake, but Zartan hit the Hard master by mistake; Baroness blamed Snake for her brother's death, and tried to have him and Scarlett killed during surgery to repair his face. Whew!

I'm sure you realized that they didn't dis-acknowledge their relationship completely as there were numerous references to it. To give a better example of a movie which drastically changed it's original story I ask you to take a look at Steven Spielberg's "Hook" which asks the question, "What if Peter Pan grew up?". Peter Pan is supposed to be the boy who never grows up yet Spielberg went the other way with it. Many do not like the movie but I care not. It is one of my favorite childhood movies.

Some may not like it but it really isn't necessary to focus on especially when reintroducing the characters again for their first live action movie. This means they are given room to experiment with the origin story before receiving the backlash from fans with which they may correct their mistakes in their follow up should they be granted one. It is absolutely possible to have the Snake Eyes & Scarlett romance and would certainly be interesting to watch develop.

That's actually what I meant to say but I lost the words so I just stuck with different perspective. As an example take a look at that Romeo & Juliet movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. It was an interesting spin on the story. Is that really so damaging? People interpret the same things differently. Anyway I completely agree with you but it just doesn't make sense to complain about something you have no control over. Just enjoy it. I sure did...not the romance, the movie.

The Dicaprio movie didn't put Juliet with someone else, and that's the point. If you don't get that, you shouldn't be trying to make an argument you can't support! They only put the story in the present day, but they didn't change the the way the story went, or who Juliet ended up with! Seriously, do you even think before you say these things?

Hey, I'm sorry for my last post. It was too harsh and I was in a bit of a rush, as I was on my way out the door. What I meant to say is that even though the DiCaprio film changed the setting, it didn't try to change the story. Most plays and novels are respected in their film adaptations, wheras comic books are usually torn to shreds whenever Hollywood types get their slimy hands on them, and most fans get very tired and fed up with that treatment. I'm sure you understand that setting the aforementioned DiCaprio movie in present day would drastically change the story of Romeo and Juliet yet it managed to keep the core story which is not unlike the recent G.I Joe movie. The G.I. Joe story's focus was not solely on Snake Eyes and Scarlett's relationship. The movie retained the core of the story even without this romance which is not the focus of the story.

To be fair to Baz Luhrmann, he may have changed the setting, but not the story. The events, characters, and dialogue were all intact, only the background was different. I wish I could agree with you on the GI JOE movie, however I've read the comics, and I can tell you that the core story was radically changed. Duke was never involved with the Baroness; the team was never a multi-national unit; Cobra Commander was originally a used-car salesman; Zartan killed the Hard Master, not Storm Shadow.

All I was saying is that movies based on franchises, whether or not how faithful they are to it's source material, are meant to show you a different perspective. You can't expect every story to be perfectly replicated onscreen. Changes are made and there's nothing you can do about it besides complain. Just enjoy it for what it is and stop being so critical about it. We could go on forever giving examples of good and bad movie adaptations.

No they are not meant to show a different perspective, they are meant to translate the author's vision to the screen, and if you really knew anything about movies, novels or the comics you would know that! Try making movies of Shakespeare and Jane Austen's works and start changing the stories around, then see how much sympathy you get when you try to tell them it's a "different perspective". They'll tell you exactly what you can do with your perspective!

When the decision is made to turn a franchise into a movie it is meant only as another take on it's story. First of all, it wasn't much of a "romance" and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets dumped in the sequel in favor of her and Snake Eyes considering so many fans hated the Ripcord thing. Second, I don't know what movies you've been watching, but if a movie is based on a novel or a comic book, it is expected to be faithful to the source material. Ask the makers of the box office flop "Superman Returns" if it was smart having Lois Lane raising a child with another man. "New" does not mean "better".

Third, Snake Eyes and Scarlett's romance has lasted 25 years in the comics, but it has never been realized onscreen because the makers of the cartoon and the movie assume that it's "difficult" because Snake Eyes can't talk, and I believe that the fans are long overdue to see this epic romance finally realized onscreen instead of inferior and contrived substitutions. "New perspective" only works if it's an improvement on the original material, which this is not! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I do understand movies -- I've been a movie buff all my life -- and the best ones adapt the matierial faithfully: The Lord Of The Rings; Sin City; The Shawshank Redemption; L.A. Confidential; etc. You only make changes when necessary, not for a toy company's convenience! If you think that movies are always meant to be completely different form the source material, you're living in a dream world! Schumacher ruined Batman, but eventually we got Nolan who did it right! You always go back to basics!

How about the fact that they just don't fit together and that Snake Eyes/Scarlett are the canon couple of the comic book? Besides, people have told me that she was just as tied to Snake Eyes, and that her and Ripcord never went beyond flirting. Fans know that Snake Eyes/Scarlett pretty much define each other, and slitting them up diminishes both characters. I've heard that they're planning a cliched love triangle thing, and if they're smart, she'll end up with Snake Eyes like she's supposed to.
