Hey shutterhappy,I'm a Mennonite and a have camera and internet.I enjoy coming on YouTube to see videos of Mennonites and Amish.I was from Belleville,Pa. where the valley was full of Amish now I'm living in South Carolina and wish I would have more pictures
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed my video. I tried to be respectful in making it and stick mostly to scenery. My initial point in making it, aside from just wanting to capture something lovely on film was the idea that a lot of people don't readily associate such folks with rural Kentucky, but rather coal mines, corn-liquor, horse farms, and banjos.
No stereotypes are fair or appropriate and I hope I didn't inadvertently add to one with my video.
Sorry about that...it's just so hard to tell sometimes. At least this time though it was just a music soundtrack...Copeland's Simple Gifts by I think the Boston Pops.
It was a great trip, though my mom's car started overheating once while we were stuck behind a horse n' buggy...in a part of the country where people don't have PHONES! Uh-oh!
Naturally nothing happened, but it would've made for a good follow-up video if it had...3 Amish boys and a cripple trying to fix a PT Cruiser!
We do have phones and the internet believe it or not! The mennonites are a big part of our community here and we respect them and do not video tape them.
I'm sorry if I've offended you. But more than anything in this video I tried to show the beauty of the countryside and what these good people have done with it.
Living 20 miles away from this community I'm well-aware that those of us who want such things CAN have phones and internet if they'd like.
Yeah, we came home with a whole cache of goodies! The area we visited is largely Mennonite but it also has some Amish folks as well. They all seem so honestly gracious and polite...if they'd let me bring my computer I might be tempted to join them! But I don't see that happening!
Are those not some of the best damned cookies you've ever had? That oatmeal/walnut/chocolate chip thing is incredible! Oh, darn it, I should have asked you to bring me back some sorghum!
ya need to check out lancaster co.. A serious amish comunity 45 min from my place..you may have heard about it from the school shooting about a year ago..the song..I have a copy of allison crouse singing it backed up with nothing but violin brigesit might can be found on one of her christmas cds..she has an incredable voice if i had to guess who this was maby boston pops
She's a GREAT performer! I'll have to look for that recording...yeah and this I think WAS the Boston Pops or somebody like that. I'd have preferred a more unique rendition like the one you describe.
Thank you for sharing this with us Matt. I doubt I'll ever be able to make it out to Amish Country, so to be able to see this through your eyes, and the eyes of MommaCasanova, was a definite gift!
Thanks! Believe it or not it's only about a 30 minute drive from the house...unless you follow my dad's directions in which case it's about an hour from here!
I thought better of it SIMPLY because it's a video about visiting people who are incredibly generous and sharing, so it might have looked like I was poking fun at their lifestyle and values, which I wouldn't want to do.
